1 Christus Rex Anglican Province of Christ the King Vol. 10, No. 3 Apostolic Christianity in the Anglican Tradition August, 2017 Acolyte and Eagle Scout Zack Roberts, Acolyte and now Eagle Scout, helped create a Prayer Garden at Church of the Holy Cross in Oklahoma City as his Eagle project. Zack Roberts is the tallest young man in the picture to the left, wearing the grey shirt, black and white hat, and glasses. The young man in the red shirt and blue jeans next to Zack is his younger brother, Jacob, also a Scout. Both Zack and Jacob serve as acolytes at Holy Cross. The blackboard in the attached picture has his Troop number, 331, and the date the work was completed 4/8/2017. Zack's Court of Honor for his Eagle Scout Medal was June 20, Zack transformed the church s back breeze-way into a Children's Prayer Garden by building and installing outdoor black boards and benches. And he planted the garden areas to attract butterflies and humming birds. (Prayer Garden photo on page 2.) Vol. 10, No. 3 Christus Rex - Page 1 August, 2017

3 Confirmations Confirmation of Jaidyn Grahn and Leopold Connor at The Parish of St. Mark, Portland, Oregon, on June 18 th. Leopold, Bishop Ashman, and Jaidyn Summer Youth Camp Bishop Frank W. Brulc confirmed Mrs. Carmela Jo Hines, a parishioner of St. George s Anglican Church in Las Vegas, NV, during a Visitation and Confirmation Mass on May 7 th. The Reverend Gordon Hines, Rector of St. George s, is on the right. Fr. and Mrs. Hines were recently married. The Bishop Morse Youth Camp was held at Warm Beach Camp north of Seattle from Sunday afternoon, July 2 nd, through Friday morning, July 7 th. The camp theme this year was the Eucharist and the overarching goals of the camp were to help our young people understand the importance of the Sacraments in their daily lives, grow in the Faith, form lasting friendships and, yes, have fun. (Continued on next page) Vol. 10, No. 3 Christus Rex - Page 3 August, 2017
4 Bishop Donald Ashman reports The camp was wonderful. We had twenty campers and nine adults including Deacon Brian Faith (Chico), Father David Webb (Redding), Father Scott Mitchell (Redding) and Father Michael Mautner (Oakland). We all owe a deep debt of gratitude to these clergy as well as to Erin (Ashman) Salazar and Mary Margaret Feagin who organized the details of the camp. Every day began with the Eucharist followed by breakfast and free time. The later part of the morning was given to instruction, then lunch, and the afternoons were given over to various other activities including arts and crafts, canoeing, swimming and High Ropes Course, up high in the trees. After Evening Prayer, we ate dinner and then more activities, including S mores at a campfire, skits and fireworks on the Fourth of July. Before bed, we had a wrap up session led by Deacon Faith. One of the older kids summed up the good feeling of the camp, when he said he didn t want it to end. 5 Seminary Summer Session Saint Joseph s Summer Seminary Session was conducted Monday, July 17 th, through Friday, July 28 th. Bishop Donald Ashman, Provost of the Seminary, reports: Two words can describe this summer s session: happy and productive. We thoroughly studied the Book of Common Prayer, the Pastoral Epistles (James, I and II Peter, and I, II, and III John), Liturgics, Spiritual Formation for Holy Orders, Eschatology, and some Ecclesiastical Latin. As the provost, I am deeply indebted to the clergy who gave of their time and talent to teach: The Reverend Dr. Paul Russell, the Right Reverend John Upham (Bishop of the Atlantic States), the Right Reverend Frank Brulc (Bishop of the Southwestern States), Father Matthew Weber, Canon Ben Jones, Father David Napier and Canon Peter Hansen. The students and faculty worshipped together in Saint Joseph s Chapel for Morning Prayer, the Eucharist, and Evening Prayer. Vol. 10, No. 3 Christus Rex - Page 5 August, 2017

DSWS Synod The Diocese of the Southwestern States (DSWS) Synod was held Tuesday, June 13 th, through Thursday, June 15 th, at the Crowne Plaza Tulsa - Southern Hills, Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Synod theme was The Family of Christ. The entire Synod, presentations, Bishop s Address, Art Contest, and Mass were all shaped around this theme. On Tuesday, Bishop Frank Brulc and his wife Kathleen hosted a welcome reception for guests. At the General Business Meeting on Wednesday, Canon Steven Dart, Rector of Christ Anglican Church, Carefree, Arizona, gave the special presentation on The Family of Christ. The Diocesan ACW Meeting and Lunch and the Standing Committee and Board of Directors Meeting were also held on Wednesday. And the Synod Banquet was held Wednesday evening at the hotel. 9 Alabama Churches Merge St. Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Catholic Parish has now merged with St. Thomas Aquinas Anglican Catholic Parish, both in Montgomery, Alabama. From 1999 to 2007 then layman Col. Michael V. Church was a member of St. Joseph s, an Episcopal Missionary Church (EMC). In 2007 Col. Church left St. Joseph s to found St. Thomas Aquinas as an APCK mission church. In 2011 Fr. Church was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood and appointed Priest in Charge of St. Thomas Aquinas. This year St. Joseph s followed Fr. Church into the APCK. The church s web address is New Deacon to be Ordained During the Seminary Summer Session Mr. Michael Ruffino successfully completed his oral examination. His ordination to the Diaconate by Bp. Donald Ashman is planned for November 19 th at St. Peter s Pro-cathedral in Oakland, California. Coming in November By Canon Charles Dillon November 14th is our feast of the Bestowal of the American Episcopate (1784), the consecration of the first Bishop of the Anglican Communion in the United States. During the colonial era, there had been no Anglican bishops in the New World; and persons seeking to be ordained as clergy had to travel to England for the purpose. After the achievement of American independence, it was important for the Church in the United States to have its own bishops, and an assembly of Connecticut clergy chose Samuel Seabury to go to England and there seek to be consecrated as a bishop. However, the English bishops were forbidden by law to consecrate anyone who would not take an oath of allegiance to the British Crown. He accordingly turned to the Episcopal Church of Scotland. When the Roman Catholic king James II was deposed in 1688, some of the Anglican clergy said that, having sworn allegiance to James as King, they could not during his lifetime swear allegiance to the new monarchs William and Mary. Those who took this position were known as non-jurors (non-swearers), and they included almost all the bishops and clergy of the Episcopal Church in Scotland. Accordingly, the monarchs and Parliament declared that thenceforth the official church in Scotland should be the Presbyterian Church. The Episcopal Church of Scotland thereafter had no recognition by the government, and for some time operated under serious legal disablities. However, since it had no connection with the government, it was free to consecrate Seabury without government permission, and it did. In Aberdeen, November 14 th,1784, Samuel Seabury was consecrated to the Episcopate by both the Bishop and the Bishop Coadjutor of Aberdeen and by the Bishop of Ross and Caithness. He thus became part of the unbroken chain of bishops that links the Church today with the Church of the Apostles. Vol. 10, No. 3 Christus Rex - Page 9 August, 2017
10 Two New Bishops To Be Consecrated Consecrations of Canon Peter F. Hansen as Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of the Western States and Canon Blair W. Schultz as Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of the Atlantic States will take place on Saint Matthew s Day, September 21 st, 2017, at All Saints Cathedral in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A New Canon The Reverend Charles Dillon, Rector of Saint Stephen s Church in Oakville, California, and President of the Standing Committee of the Diocese of the Western States, was invested as Canon to the Ordinary on the Sixth Sunday after Trinity, July 23 rd, at Saint Stephen s. Canon Dillon replaced the DWS Suffragan Bishop elect, Canon Hansen. Canon Dillon Canon Hansen Canon Schultz Christus Rex is the national publication of the Anglican Province of Christ the King. Abp.
