1 Christus Rex Anglican Province of Christ the King Vol. 6, No. 3 Apostolic Christianity in the Anglican Tradition December, 2013 St. James Anglican Church is Dedicated By Deacon Daniel Canda On the 20 th Sunday after Trinity, October 13, 2013, Archbishop James Provence celebrated a dedication Mass with the Deacon in Charge, Daniel Canda, and the new congregation of St. James Anglican Church in Fort Collins, Colorado. The dedication marks an exciting return of the APCK into the Northern Colorado region. St. James joins her sister congregations in the area of All Saints in Cheyenne, Wyoming, St. Aidan s in Colorado Springs, and St. Patrick s in Westcliffe, Colorado. St. James meets at the historic Danforth Chapel on the CSU campus. This beautiful chapel was designed by the architect James M. Hunter, and was dedicated in 1954 for the spiritual development of the students of Colorado State University of all faiths. It is open to the public throughout the week for ecumenical services, weddings, or just meditation. When the chapel was designed, the intention was to create a non-denominational place for prayer and meditation for all faiths. However, there is clearly a Christian theme inherent in the design with an 8 foot wooden cross that dominates the north end of the chapel, a beautiful stained glass window stretching from floor to ceiling depicting the Genesis creation, and two 6 foot angelic forms emblazoned on the copper entrance doors. Due to the public ownership through the state campus, and by state law, the building must be open to all faiths; however, it now stands as an archeological stele testifying to the Christian roots of our country. St. James Anglican Church is honored to be linked to such an interesting point of history. Vol. 6, No. 3 Christus Rex - Page 1 December, 2013

2 Interestingly, this is one of 15 chapels built by the Danforth foundation of St. Louis and the Foundation president, William H. Danforth, in what is known as the Danforth Chapel Program on public American campuses. St. James was originally formed on the 8 th Sunday after Trinity. They chose St. James as the parish patriarch because the congregation was formed near to his feast day of July 25, and also the congregation had a desire to follow the words of his epistle, Faith, without works is dead, being alone (James 3:2). As they are located on the Colorado State University Campus, they intend to work out their faith focusing on a student ministry. Of course, the St. James congregation holds their arms open to all students, faculty, and the entire Fort Collins community. The church is blessed to have several students already attending alongside three non-student families, and we will soon be officially represented on campus through a university recognized student organization. Currently, we meet every Sunday at 9:30 am for Morning Prayer, and 10:00 am to administer Holy Communion from the Reserved Sacrament. The only exception to this is every 4 th Sunday of the month, when Deacon Canda is celebrating with St. Patrick s in Westcliffe, CO. On these Sundays, St. James offers the Office of Morning Prayer, which is often led by students. Deacon Canda is currently a candidate for ordination to the priesthood and is studying to take his canonical exams this spring. He graduated from CSU and joined the church when Fr. Jeffrey Smith was serving Ascension Church and was active on the CSU campus. Visitors in the Ft. Collins area are always welcome to attend St. James services and can learn more about our congregation by contacting Deacon Canda by phone, , or by visiting our website: American Church Union New Publication By Christine Sunderland The American Church Union is pleased to announce the publication of the second edition of The Life of Raymond Raynes by Nicholas Mosley (335 pages, perfect bound), with an introductory price of $10 including shipping and handling. Thanks to Nicholas Mosley for his permission to republish and to the work of the ACU Editorial Board. "Half Jesuit and half Salvation Army," someone said of Father Raynes. An Anglican monk, the late Superior of the Community of the Resurrection, Mirfield, England, Father Raynes combined personal holiness with a passionate care for people, and intellectual zeal with a life of intense activity. In Johannesburg, South Africa, he founded churches and schools, a work continued by Father Huddleston. In England he challenged the "establishment" in the Church yet stood for tradition. Nicolas Mosley, who was asked by the Community of the Resurrection, Mirfield, England to write this biography, was himself an agnostic when he first met Father Raynes. He writes, "Father Raynes was a person whom one either had to listen to or to deny; one could not ignore him." Sir John Betjeman stated: "I read Mr. Mosley's book at a sitting, gripped by its narrative power, its humour and breadth. To me, as a layman, it seems the right book by the right man. It brings back the strong impact of its subject and I felt, having read it, as though I had once more met Father Raynes face to face. I do not like to think of it ever being unobtainable or out of print for it can introduce him vigorously and vividly to those who never had the privilege of knowing him." 3 St. Alban's, Lady Lake, Florida, Breaks Ground Groundbreaking for a new church building took place on September 20, 2013, at 2 pm. The service was conducted by Archbishop James E. Provence (at left below). Lady Lake Mayor Pro Tem Ruth Kussard and councilmember Fred Hannah are shown along with Deacon Greg Koon, Bishop John E. Upham, Jr., and Deacon Wayne Ogg. The Color Guard of the American Legion (which resides next door to the church grounds) opened the ceremony with the flags and pledge of allegiance. The Reverend Boyd R. Archbishop James E. Provence presided, assisted in the laying on of hands by the Rector, Bp. Donald Ashman, and the Curate, Fr. Robert Greene, and by Fr. Scott Herb (from St. Mark's, Portland) and Fr. Ron White (St. Mary the Virgin, San Diego.) The ordination was followed by a gala luncheon in the newly painted parish hall. It was both a festive and family affair. Father Britton celebrated his first Mass on Thanksgiving Day, November 28 th. Vol. 6, No. 3 Christus Rex - Page 3 December, 2013

4 Fr. Betsos Installed as Rector of St. Mark s, Victoria, BC Fr. George Betsos (at left) was installed as the new Rector of St. Mark s Church by Abp. James Provence on October 20 th. Fr. Betsos, who had attended summer classes at St. Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Theological College, was ordained Priest by Archbishop Provence on July 1 st and posted as Assistant Curate to St. Marks. Fr. Betsos graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts and Master of Theological Studies with a concentration in Psychotherapy and Diplomas in Marriage and Family Counseling and Sacred Ministry. St. Mark s was founded in 2010 as a traditional Anglican church by The Reverend Canon Stanley R. Sinclair, Master of Divinity (at right). Canon Sinclair, originally from California, was ordained as a priest in 1957 and has served churches in California, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Father Stan, as he is affectionately known by parishioners, came out of his retirement to begin St. Mark s. Seminary Announces Online Courses for Winter/Spring, 2014 Our Province's seminary, St Joseph of Arimathea Anglican Theological College, will again offer online lecture courses on weekday evenings for interested clergy and laity. The three courses offered in the winter/spring term encompass, as usual, a broad range of topics. The online program has been restructured so that there will be one course designed especially for postulants and deacons, another for the continuing education of clergy, and a third one for a general audience, but, of course, anyone is free to take any or all classes. Each class may be viewed at the time of broadcast or later in recorded form, and on either a computer screen or a mobile device. The fee for The History and Use of The Book of Common Prayer, a 15 week course with written assignments, is $250. The other two courses, for auditors, are offered at the ridiculously low price of $50. The Theology of the Seven Ecumenical Councils - The Rev. Jeffrey Smith, St. Luke's Anglican Church, Redding, CA, Tuesdays, 6-7 pm (Pacific Time). The course is designed for a general audience. There are no written assignments, and the fee is $50. Begins January 28 and ends April 8. A Study of Genesis - The Rev. Michael Mautner, St. Peter's Parish, Oakland, CA, Wednesdays, 6-7 pm (Pacific Time). This high-level Bible study is designed mainly for the continuing education of clergy, yet will also be of interest to laity with some familiarity with the Old Testament. Begins January 29 and ends May 14. The History and Use of The Book of Common Prayer - The Rev. Canon Blair Schultz, All Saints Anglican Church, Bollingbroke, IL, Thursdays, 8-9 pm (Central Time). This course is designed for postulants and clergy who have not had a formal course in the Prayer Book, yet will also be of interest to laity who seek a more in-depth knowledge of traditional Anglican worship and use of the Sacraments This 15-week course has written assignments, and the fee is $250. Begins January 30 and ends May 15. Sign up and receive your instructions for paying and for tuning in from Fr. Jeffrey Smith by sending an to: frjeff1@qwestoffice.net. 5 2013 Eastern Seminar This past autumn the seminary again offered a one-week seminar at the Cathedral Parish in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., from Monday, September 30, through Friday, October 4. Participants followed the daily seminary round of Morning Prayer, Class, Midday Mass, Class and Evening Prayer. Worship was held in the Cathedral Parish and instruction took place in the undercroft parish hall. Classes included Old Testament, New Testament, Ethics, Church History, Canon law and Ecclesiology. These topics reflect the seminary s year-round online program, aiding the ordinand in effective use of his online studies, and these two academic programs complement one another. The faculty for this session included: Mr. Paul Evans, doctoral student in Medieval Studies at The Catholic University of America. The Rev. Dr. Paul S. Russell, Dean of the Cathedral Parish of Christ the King. The Most Rev. James E. Provence, Archbishop, APCK. The Rt. Rev. Dr. John E. Upham, Jr., Suffragan Bishop for the Diocese of the Atlantic States. Participants included Deacon Bill Recher from North Carolina and three lay people from the Cathedral Parish. During the week Abp Provence also presided over a diaconal exam for Tom Mills (who passed). The Rev. Canon Blair Schultz, Canon to the Archbishop and Rector, All Saints Anglican Church, Bolingbrook, IL, also came to help with the exam. The seminary plans to offer the Easter Seminar again in the autumn of Those individuals who plan to attend the 2014 Eastern Seminar should contact their bishop to ensure that their program takes place in the context of Diocesan ministry. 7 Fr. Jeffrey Smith conducts a class in Liturgical History The 2013 Summer Session at the seminary was well attended and very well taught. Classes were conducted in Old Testament, New Testament, Dogmatic Theology, Patristic Theology, Liturgical History, Liturgical Practice, Ecclesiology and Ecclesiastical Polity, Ministerial Service in a Congregation, Homiletics and The Life and History of the APCK. These lectures in traditional seminary subjects were designed to help postulants for Holy Orders in their studies and to provide enrichment for existing clergy who attended. Some laymen also attended who are considering becoming postulants or who simply wanted to learn more about the Bible, Church history, Theology, and the tradition of Anglican worship. Instructors often attended one another s classes and included Fr. Steven Dart, Fr. Michael Mautner, Archbishop James Provence, Fr. Paul Russell, Fr. Jeffrey Smith, and Fr. Matthew Weber. Classes were conducted Monday through Friday during the two weeks at the seminary, July Students who were staying over the weekend attended services at one of the local San Francisco bay area parishes. Participants followed a daily schedule that began with Morning Prayer and Eucharist at 9 a.m. followed by class from 10:00 to noon, lunch, class from 1:00 to 3:00, Tea and discussion at 3:00 and Vespers at 5:00 p.m. Some participants were present for only the first or second week of the two-week session, but most attended both weeks.
