Preface Throughout all generations, the God Whom we worship has given us a model of selfemptying love that requires a response of nothing less than our highest and best: in our prayer, in our ritual, in our song, and in our lives. Word & Eucharist: Daily (W&E) provides the English-speaking member ship of the Roman Catholic Church with a permanent, dignified and comprehensive pew book of ritual and prayer. Bringing together under one cover the components of Sacred Liturgy that are necessary for the faithful to fully and actively participate in the Eucharistic life of the Church, W&E represents an historical movement to higher ground in the ongoing work of Liturgical Reform. Liturgists remind us: Lex credendi, lex orandi; lex orandi, lex credendi. We express our faith in our prayer; our prayer informs and forms our faith. Codifying the prayers, orders and rituals of our Eucharistic tradition constructs and provides an inestimable treasure that is at once accessible to the faithful. Though there are compelling arguments for simply hearing and receiving Word and ritual, there is tremendous merit in providing printed texts of prayer and Scripture. Scientific and educational data has revealed that viewing written texts significantly increases both comprehen sion and retention. And, although many parishes work heroically to improve sound systems, train lectors and cantors, provide listening aids to the hearing impaired, improve enunciation in leadership of prayer, and compensate for linguistic and cultural differences, there will always be a need for well-ordered and complete texts to aid in the participation of the faithful. Word & Eucharist is an instrument of unity and clarity for parishes in the United States. In addition to the prayers and orders of Eucharist, W&E includes all the Daily Readings for Years I and II with the Proper of Saints. The Readings for each day include the Psalm, the Verse before the Gospel and the Entrance and Communion antiphons. Thus, W&E affords the faithful complete, dignified and permanent access to the order, prayers and readings needed for daily Mass. Lastly, W&E honors the hermeneutic of continuity by including the rich deposit of Catholic prayers and devotions. Planning, compiling and editing Word & Eucharist required the gifts, insights and dedication of many extraordinarily talented contributors. Theologians, pres byters, liturgists, musicians and scholars each made unique offerings to this monu mental work. Most importantly, at the heart of this work lives a simple vision: a faithful, complete, refined, cost-effective, useful Catholic Mass book of prayer and ritual. May Word & Eucharist bless you and your parish; and, together, may we compromise nothing in our praise of the God Who loves us without compromise. Vincent Ambrosetti Publisher, ILP

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, At the words that follow, up to and including and became man, all bow. and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

900 Proper of Saints no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. COMMUNION ANTIPHON From the Common of Holy Men and Women: For Religious Psalm 34 (33):9 Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed the man who seeks refuge in him. Additional readings are available in the Common of Holy Men and Women. April 4 Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor of the Church ENTRANCE ANTIPHON From the Common of Pastors: For a Bishop cf. Luke 12:42 This is the steward, faithful and prudent, whom the Lord set over his household to give them their allowance of food at the proper time (E.T.: Alleluia). Or: From the Common of Doctors of the Church Psalm 37 (36):30 31 The mouth of the just man utters wisdom, and his tongue tells forth what is just; the law of his God is in his heart (E.T.: Alleluia). FIRST READING 2 Corinthians 4:1 2, 5 7 Brothers and sisters: Since we have this ministry through the mercy shown us, we are not discouraged. Rather, we have renounced shameful, hidden things; not acting deceitfully or falsifying the word of God, but by the open declaration of the truth we commend ourselves to everyone s conscience in the sight of God. For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus. For God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of Jesus Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 37:3 4, 5 6, The mouth of the just murmurs wisdom. Trust in the Lord and do good, that you may dwell in the land and be fed in security. Take delight in the Lord, and he will grant you your heart s requests. Commit to the Lord your way; trust in him, and he will act. He will make justice dawn for you like the light; bright as the noonday shall be your vindication. The mouth of the just tells of wisdom and his tongue utters what is right. The law of his God is in his heart, and his steps do not falter.

April GOSPEL ACCLAMATION John 15:5 Alleluia, alleluia. I am the vine, you are the branches, says the Lord; whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit. GOSPEL Luke 6:43 45 Jesus said to his disciples: A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. COMMUNION ANTIPHON From the Common of Pastors: For a Bishop cf. Luke 12:36 37 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord finds awake when he comes and knocks at the gate (E.T.: Alleluia). Or: From the Common of Doctors of the Church cf. Psalm 1:2 3 He who ponders the law of the Lord day and night will yield his fruit in due season (E.T.: Alleluia). Additional readings are available in the Common of Pastors or Common of Doctors of the Church. April 5 Saint Vincent Ferrer, Priest ENTRANCE ANTIPHON From the Common of Pastors: For Missionaries cf. Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings glad tidings of peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation (E.T.: Alleluia). FIRST READING 2 Timothy 4:1 5 Beloved: I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry.

902 Proper of Saints RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 40:2, 4, 7 8, 8 9, 10, 11 Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. I have waited, waited for the Lord, and he stooped toward me and heard my cry. And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. Sacrifice or oblation you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. Burnt offerings or sin-offerings you sought not; then said I, Behold I come. In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, To do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart! I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O Lord, know. Your justice I kept not hid within my heart; your faithfulness and your salvation I have spoken of; I have made no secret of your kindness and your truth in the vast assembly. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Luke 21:36 Alleluia, alleluia. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you may have the strength to stand before the Son of Man. GOSPEL Luke 12:35 40 Jesus said to his disciples: Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master s return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. COMMUNION ANTIPHON From the Common of Pastors: For Missionaries Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:20 Go into all the world, and proclaim the Gospel. I am with you always, says the Lord (E.T.: Alleluia). Additional readings are available in the Common of Pastors.

April April 7 Saint John Baptist de la Salle, Priest (Memorial) ENTRANCE ANTIPHON From the Common of Pastors: For One Pastor cf. Psalm 131:9 Your priests, O Lord, shall be clothed with justice; your holy ones shall ring out their joy (E.T.: Alleluia). Or: From the Common of Holy Men and Women: For Educators cf. Mark 10:14 Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these (E.T.: Alleluia). FIRST READING 2 Timothy 1:13 14; 2:1 3 Beloved: Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. My child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will have the ability to teach others as well. Bear your share of hardship along with me like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 1:1 2, 3, 4 and 6 Blessed are they who hope in the Lord. Or: Blessed are they who delight in the law of the Lord. Or: The just will flourish like the palm tree in the garden of the Lord. Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked Nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, But delights in the law of the Lord and meditates on his law day and night. He is like a tree planted near running water, That yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers. Not so, the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. For the Lord watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:11, 12b

904 Proper of Saints GOSPEL Matthew 18:1 5 The disciples approached Jesus and said, Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven? He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. COMMUNION ANTIPHON From the Common of Pastors: For One Pastor Luke 12:42 This is the steward, faithful and prudent, whom the Lord set over his household, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time (E.T.: Alleluia). Or: From the Common of Holy Men and Women: For Educators Matthew 18:3 Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven, says the Lord (E.T.: Alleluia). Additional readings are available in the Common of Pastors or Common of Holy Men and Women. April 11 Saint Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr (Memorial) ENTRANCE ANTIPHON From the Common of Martyrs: For One Martyr This truly is a Martyr, who shed his blood for the name of Christ, who did not fear the threats of judges but attained the heavenly kingdom. Or, during Easter Time: From the Common of Martyrs: For One Martyr During Easter Time This is the one who was not deserted by God on the day of struggle and now wears a crown of victory for faithfulness to the Lord s commands, alleluia. FIRST READING I, John, heard a loud voice in heaven say: Now have salvation and power come, and the Kingdom of God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of our brothers is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night. They conquered him by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; love for life did not deter them from death. Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them. Revelation 12:10 12a

April RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 34:2 3, 4 5, 6 7,8 9 The Lord delivered me from all my fears. I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the Lord; the lowly will hear and be glad. Glorify the Lord with me, let us together extol his name. I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Look to him that you may be radiant with joy, and your faces may not blush with shame. When the poor one called out, the Lord heard, and from all his distress he saved him. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Taste and see how good the Lord is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his holy ones, for nought is lacking to those who fear him. The great grow poor and hungry; but those who seek the Lord want for no good thing. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed be the Father of compassion and God of all encouragement, who encourages us in our every affliction. 2 Corinthians 1:3b 4a GOSPEL John 17:11b 19 Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and prayed, saying: Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one. When I was with them I protected them in your name that you gave me, and I guarded them, and none of them was lost except the son of destruction, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you. I speak this in the world so that they may share my joy completely. I gave them your word, and the world hated them, because they do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the Evil One. They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. And I consecrate myself for them, so that they also may be consecrated in truth. COMMUNION ANTIPHON From the Common of Martyrs: For One Martyr cf. John 15:1, 5 I am the true vine and you are the branches, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, bears fruit in plenty.
