И им кажав на учениците Твои да го изгонат, но тие не можеа. 19. А Исус одговори и рече: О, роде неверен, до кога ќе бидам со вас? До кога ќе ве трпам? Доведете го при Мене! 20. И кога го доведоа кај Него штом го виде, веднаш духот го стресе; и тој падна наземи и се валкаше запенет. 21. Го праша Исус татка му: Колку време има откако станува тоа со него? Тој одговори: Од детинство; 22. и многупати духот го фрлал во оган, и во вода, за да го погуби; но, ако можеш, смили се над нас и помогни ни! 23. А Исус му рече: Ако можеш да поверуваш? Сè е можно за оној што верува! 24. И одеднаш таткото на момчето извика и со солзи рече: Верувам, Господи, помогни му на моето неверие! 25. А Исус, штом виде дека се собра многу народ, му забрани на нечистиот дух и му рече Дух нем и глув, Јас ти заповедам: излези од него, и не влегувај веќе во него! 26. И кога извика, силно го стресе и излезе; а момчето беше како мртво така што мнозина велеа дека умрело. 27. Исус, пак, откако го фати за рака, го исправи; и тоа стана. 28. И кога влезе Исус во една куќа, учениците Негови Го прашаа насамо: Зошто ние не можевме да го истераме? 29. Им одговори: Тој род си ништо не може да се истера, освен со молитва и пост. 30. И кога излегоа оттаму, минеа преку Галилеја; и Он не сакаше некој да разбере. 31. Оти ги учеше учениците Свои и им велеше дека Синот Човечки ќе биде предаден во човечки раце, и ќе Го убијат, и на третиот ден по убивањето ќе воскресне. Порака од нашите свештеници: Во денешното Евангелие ни се покажува дека со вера во Христа сите нешта се можни. И ние треба да повикаме, како таткото од денешното Евангелие: Верувам, Господи, помогни му на моето неверие. Освен тоа, овој оддел ни открива дека верата која ги победува демоните доаѓа единствено од молитвата и постот. Во овој момент, Христос почнува да им открива на учениците за Неговото идно страдање. 2

3 НАШАТА БОРБА СО СТРАСТИТЕ Што се страстите? Страстите се емоции што нè контролираат. На пример, сексуалната желба, гневот, зависта, желбата за материјални добра, стравот... Некои мислат дека страстите се нешто што треба да го посакуваме. Ако сме страствени за нешто, тоа значи дека сме носени од желбата да ја исполниме задачата што ни претстои. Но, тоа е нешто сосема друго. Значењето на зборот страст (πάθος) во раната Црква значело страдање. Кога зборуваме за Христовите Страсти, ние мислиме на Неговото страдање за време на распнувањето. Секој боледува од некакви страсти што се појавиле по падот на Адам и Ева. Тоа е болест што ни се пренела. За да се исцелиме од нив, мораме да се бориме силно. Но, ние не се бориме со наши сили, туку со благодатта на нашиот Господ и Спасител Исус Христос. Сепак, станува збор за една важна лична борба, зашто исцелението од страстите може да ни се претстави како неприродно. Но, всушност, последиците од страстите во нашиот живот е она што е неприродно. Ние не сме биле создадени за ова. Многу од страстите ни се чинат природни и угодни, како стомакоугодувањето, гордоста, похотта, гневот, суетата, среброљубието (желбата за пари) итн. Но, токму овие нешта се причината за нашето страдање и оттргање од Бог Творецот. Не можеме да им служиме на двајца господари нè поучува Христос (Лука 16,13). Во овој живот, или се стремиме да Го стекнеме Бога, или се стремиме да ги стекнеме оние нешта што се спротивни на Бога и нè контролираат. Св. Инокентиј Аљаски (+1879) вели: Секој човек се стреми кон среќа. Таа желба ни е всадена по природа од Самиот Творец и затоа не е грешна. Но, важно е да разбереме дека во овој привремен живот не е возможно да се пронајде потполна среќа, зашто таа доаѓа од Бога и не може да се здобие без Него. Само Тој, Кој е Возвишено Добро и Извор на сите Добра, може да ја згасне нашата жед за среќа. Колку и да се угодливи и примамливи страстите, ние можеме да бидеме излекувани од нив и да ја најдеме вечната среќа која е во Христос. Овој процес е болен, но св. Павле вели: Мислам дека сегашните страдања не се ништо во споредба со славата која ќе ни се открие (Римјани 8,18). Светите отци на Црквата ја определиле секоја страст и го покажале патот на исцелување. Св. Јован Касијан во овој редослед ги изложува страстите: 3

4 1.Стомакоугодие 2.Блуд 3.Среброљубие 4.Гнев 5.Тага 6.Очај (униние) 7.Суета 8.Гордост Од овие осум страсти настануваат сите други гревови. Има два вида страсти: природни и неприродни страсти. Природните страсти се условени од нашата физичка природа и одржувањето на нашето физичко постоење. Такви се апетитот за храна, стравот да бидеме повредени и сексуалната привлечност кон спротивниот пол. Овие нешта се неопходни за нашето преживување. Тие се централен дел од нашата животинска природа, која е општа со сите животни. Тие не се проблематични сè додека не ја надминуваат границата на самоодржувањето. Потоа, постојат и неприродни страсти: желба за пари, суета, гордост... Еве некои работи што треба да ги имаме предвид во борбата против страстите: Лесно можеме да не ги забележиме. Бидејќи страстите се толку природен и очигледен дел од нашата природа, лесно можеме да им се предадеме. На пример, би држеле гнев, бидејќи се чувствуваме праведно. Можеме да се гневиме и затоа што сите се гневат. Прејадувањето или стомакоугодието е распространето во САД и во други земји, бидејќи се благословени со изобилие. Но, Бог нема да не суди помалку кога се предаваме на раскошни јадења, додека други немаат за јадење и пиење. Ова можеби звучи остро, но прочитајте ја Параболата за овците и козите. Поради тоа што бев жеден и не Ми дадовте да пијам, можеби нема да бидеме примени во Неговото Царство. Повеќето реклами се вртат околу човечките страсти. Похотта се промовира постојано на ТВ и на Интернет со сексуални пораки и различни лекови да се задоволи сечија похота. Прекрасни јадења, величествени (стомакоугодување). Лотарија, како да се добијат милиони и милиони долари (среброљубие). Гневот се изразува во брачните разводи итн. Гламурозните модели и подобриот начин да се има секс, како и храната без калории се поврзува со зависта и суетата. Холивуд трагично ги промовира и користи сите деструктивни и грешни страсти кај човекот. Св. Исак Сирин вели дека поголемо чудо е човек да може да се види себеси вистински, отколку воскреснувањето на мртви. Нашата Света Православна црква ги разбира страстите како искривување на природните стремежи. Похотта е неприродна употреба на сексуалноста. Стомакоугодието е неприродна употреба и поврзување со храната. Алчноста е неприродна поврзаност со материјалниот свет. Зависта е неприродна потреба и 4

5 желба за она што го немаме. Страста на гневот е исто така неприродна форма. Бог Самиот може да се гневи, но очигледно да не греши. А и ние сме повикани да не грешиме во нашиот гнев (Ефесјани 4,26). Мрзливоста или одложувањето е нездрава форма на одмор и откажување. Треба да се потрудиме малку за да добиеме исцелување од страстите. Некои христијански автори сметале дека страста на мрзливоста е значајна како и гордоста. Мрзливоста е толку моќна, така што можеш да знаеш што треба да правиш за да се спасиш, но тоа да го правиш премногу бавно, како човек кој не успева да стигне до итната помош навреме. Православната црква учи дека ние сме болни со болеста на гревот и страстите, Нашата вистинска природа треба да биде исцелена. Да се љуби Бог, да се придржуваме до Неговите заповеди и да ги живееме сите плодови на Светиот Дух, љубовта, радоста, мирот, трпението, добротата, милосрдноста, верата, кроткоста и воздржаноста (Галатјани 5,22-23). Причината зошто ги немаме овие нешта е во нашата духовна болест. Патот да ги стекнеме нив е преку покајание што води до вистинско исцеление. Старецот Ефрем Филотејски од Аризона вели: Чедо мое, бори се, зашто патот Божји е тесен и трнлив; не по природа, туку заради нашите страсти. Штом сакаме да ги искорениме од нашето срце страстите коишто се како трнливи корења, за да можеме да насадиме корисни дрвја, нормално дека ќе работиме со многу труд и нашите раце ќе крварат и нашето лице ќе се поти. Понекогаш и очај ќе нè обзеде, кога ќе ги видиме корењата и страстите насекаде! Но, со надежта во Христа, Исправителот на нашите души, да се потрудиме ревносно околу чистењето на земјата на нашето срце. Трпение, плач, послушание, отсекување на волјата сите овие добродетели помагаат при ова обработување. Треба да ја вложиме целата наша сила и тогаш Бог, откако ќе го види нашиот труд, ќе дојде и ќе го благослови и ќе имаме успех. Биди храбар, зашто маката е привремена и кратка, додека наградата на небесата е голема. Бори се и бдеј над твоите мисли. Имај цврста надеж, зашто ова покажува дека твојата куќа е основана на камен а Каменот е нашиот Христос. ЗАБЕЛЕШКА: Оваа петта седмица од постот, подвигот се засилува како што се приближуваме кон крајот. Во среда навечер од 18:00 ч. ќе се чита целиот Покаен канон на св. Андреј Критски, а во петок последниот и целосен Акатист кон Пресвета Богородица со Петолебие, со почеток од 18:00. По службата (19:00), ќе се одржи Катихетска школа на тема: Подвижничкиот живот во Црквата: за осумте основни страсти и борбата со нив. 5

6 Fourth Sunday of Lent, St. John Climacus Mark 9: Then one of the crowd answered and said, Teacher, I brought You my son, who has a mute spirit. 18 And wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I spoke to Your disciples, that they should cast it out, but they could not. 19 He answered him and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him to Me. 20 Then they brought him to Him. And when he saw Him, immediately the spirit convulsed him, and he fell on the ground and wallowed, foaming at the mouth. 21 So He asked his father, How long has this been happening to him? And he said, From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. 23 Jesus said to him, If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes. 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief! 25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it: Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more! 26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, He is dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, Why could we not cast it out? 29 So He said to them, This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting. 30 Then they departed from there and passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it. 31 For He taught His disciples and said to them, The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day. Message from our Priests: In today's Gospel passage, we are shown that through faith in Christ all things are possible. We too need to cry as the father in today's Gospel, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief." Furthermore, this passage reveals that faith to conquer our demons comes only from prayer and fasting. At this point, Christ begins to reveal to the disciples about His upcoming suffering. 6

7 OUR STRUGGLE AGAINST THE PASSIONS What are Passions? Passions are the emotions that control you. They include sexual desire, anger, envy, desire for material goods and fear to name a few. There are those of us who believe and think of passion as something that we should desire. If we are passionate about something it means that we are driven by desire to fulfill the task at hand. But that s something else. The meaning of the word "passion" (πάθος) in the early Church meant "to suffer". When we speak of Christ's Passion, we speak of His suffering during His torture and Crucifixion. Everyone is afflicted by certain passions that occurred after the fall of Adam and Eve. This is the disease that was passed down to us. To be healed from them, we have to fight hard. We don't fight in our own strength, but in the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. It is still a significant personal fight and struggle, however, because healing from the passions feels very unnatural to us. But in fact, the effects of the passions in our life is quite unnatural. We were never created for this. Many of the passions feel natural and pleasurable to us, like gluttony, pride, lust, anger, vainglory, and avarice, etc. But in reality, these things cause us to suffer spiritually and are pulling us away from God and Creator. We cannot serve two masters Christ teaches us. (Luke 16:13). In this life, we either strive to obtain God, or we strive to obtain the things that are opposed to God and are controlling us. Saint Innocent of Alaska (+1879) wrote: "Every individual instinctively strives for happiness. This desire has been implanted in our nature by the Creator Himself, and therefore it is not sinful. But it is important to understand that in this temporary life it is impossible to find full happiness, because that comes from God and cannot be attained without Him. Only He, who is the Ultimate Good and the Source of all Good, can quench our thirst for happiness." As pleasurable and deceptive as the passions are, we can be healed from them and find the eternal happiness that is in Christ. This process is often painful, but as Saint Paul writes, "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." (Romans 8:18) The Holy Church Fathers defined each of the passions and laid out the way of healing. Saint John Cassion lays them out in this way: 1.Gluttony 2.Fornication (lust) 3.Avarice 4.Anger 5.Dejection 6.Despondency 7.Vainglory 8.Pride 7

8 Out of these eight main passions arise all other sins. We can think of them in two types: natural and unnatural passions. The natural passions depend on our physical nature and the maintenance of our physical being. These include our appetite for food, our fear of being harmed, and our sexual attraction to the opposite sex. These are all necessary for our preservation. They are a central part of our animal nature and common to all animals. These are not a problem unless they go beyond the need for self-preservation. Then there are the unnatural passions: avarice, vainglory, pride Here are some things to consider in you struggle against the passions: They are easy to miss. Because passions are so "natural" and seemingly part of our nature they are easy to hold onto. We may hold onto anger because we feel justified. We may also hold onto it because "everyone gets angry." Overeating or gluttony seems common enough in the U.S. and other countries because they are blessed with abundance. But will God judge us any less when we indulge in a latte drink while others have nothing to eat or drink. This may sound harsh, but look at the Parable of the sheep and the goats. It is because "I was thirsty and you didn't give me anything to drink" that we might not be allowed into His Kingdom. Most advertising is centered around human passions. Lust is promoted on T.V. and the Internet constantly with sexual messages and various drugs to satisfy one's lust. Delectable food, food most glorious (gluttony). Lottery tickets, how to make millions and millions of dollars (Avarice/greed). Anger is represented by marital breakups, divorce, etc. The glamour models and better way to have sex and eating with no calories appeals to our envy and vainglory. Hollywood tragically promotes and exploits all the destructive and sinful passions of man. Saint Isaac the Syrian said that it is a "greater miracle that a man can see his true self than the raising of the dead." Our Holy Orthodox Church understood passions as the distortion of the natural tendencies. Lust is an unnatural use of sexuality. Gluttony is an unnatural use or connection with food. Greed is the unnatural attachment with the material world. Envy is an unnatural need and want for what one does not have. The passion of anger is an unnatural form of wrath. God, Himself can be wrathful, but obviously doesn't sin. We are called to not sin in our anger (Ephesians 4:26). Sloth or what we may call procrastination is an unhealthy form of 'rest' or 'letting go.' We must do some work to acquire healing from the passions. Some Christian writers thought that the passion of sloth might be as important as pride. Sloth is so powerful, you might know what to do to be saved, but you might do it too slowly, like the man who doesn't make it to the emergency room on time. 8

9 The Holy Orthodox Christian Church teaches that we are ill with the illness of sin and the passions. Our true nature is to be healed. To love God, to adhere to His Commandments and live in all of the fruit of the Holy Spirit, love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). The reason why we do not possess this is because of our spiritual illness. The way to attain it is through repentance which leads to true healing. Elder Ephraim the Philotheite of Arizona writes: "Struggle, my child, for God's road is narrow and thorny; not inherently, but because of our passions. Since we want to eradicate from our heart the passions, which are like thorny roots, so that we may plant useful plants, naturally we shall toil greatly and our hands will bleed and our face will sweat. Sometimes even despair will overcome us, seeing roots and passions everywhere! But with our hope in Christ, the Repairer of our souls, let us diligently work at clearing the earth of our heart. Patience, mourning, obedience, cutting off one's will all these virtues help cultivate it. We must apply all our strength, and then God, seeing our labor, comes and blesses it, and thus we make progress. Take courage, for the toil is temporary and ephemeral, whereas the reward is great in heaven. Struggle and be vigilant with your thoughts. Keep a firm hold on hope, for this shows that your house is founded on the rock and the Rock is our Christ." NOTE: As we approach to the end of the Lent, the feat is increasing. On Wednesday evening at 6 PM we ll read the whole Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, and on Friday at 6 PM is the last and full Akathist service to the Mother of God. After the sevice (7:30 PM) there will be a Catechetical School on The ascetical life in the Church: about the eight basic passions and the struggle against them. 9

10 Во четвртата недела од Великиот пост, Православната црква си спомнува за праведниот отец Јован Лествичник. Наречен е Лествичник, бидејќи ја напишал духовната книга Лествица. Неговиот спомен е назначен од Црквата за една од неделите на Великиот пост, бидејќи неговиот живот и книги го покажуваат него како возвишен носител и застапник на христијанкото подвижништво. Подвижничкиот пример на овој голем отец на Црквата нè вдахновува во нашето великипосно патешествие. Во ова бесмртно дело и духовно полезна книга Лествица гледаме како, низ 30 чекори, христијанинот постепено се искачува оддолу нагоре кон височините на возвишеното духовно совршенство. Конечно, гледаме како една добродетел води кон друга, како што човекот се искачува сè погоре и погоре и на крајот стигнува на височината каде што е круната на сите добродетели, т.е. христијанската љубов. Постои една икона со истиот наслов. На неа се прикажани многу луѓе што се скачуваат на лествица (скала); најгоре е Исус Христос, подготвен да ги прими оние што се искачуваат кон небото. Прикажани се и ангели како им помагаат на оние што се искачуваат, а демони се обидуваат да ги погодат со стрели или да ги повлечат нив, без разлика колку високо на скалата и да се тие. Оваа икона ја претставува духовната битка на христијанскиот живот. 10

11 On the Fourth Sunday of Holy Lent the Orthodox Church commemorates our Righteous Father John Climacus. He is called Climacus due to his authorship of the great spiritual work The Ladder of Divine Ascent. His commemoration is designated by the Church on one of the Sundays of Lent as his life and writings affirm him as a supreme bearer and proponent of Christian asceticism. The ascetic example of this great Saint of the Church inspires us in our Lenten journey. In this immortal work, and spiritually rewarding book of the LADDER OF DIVINE ASCENT, we see how, by means of thirty steps, the Christian gradually ascends from below the heights of supreme spiritual perfection. Finally, we see how one virtue leads to another, as a man rises higher and higher and finally attains to that height where there abides the crown of the virtues, which is called Christian love. There is also a related icon known by the same title. It depicts many people climbing a ladder; at the top is Jesus Christ, prepared to receive the climbers into Heaven. Also shown are angels helping the climbers, and demons attempting to shoot with arrows or drag down the climbers, no matter how high up the ladder they may be. It represents the spiritual battle of the Christian life. 11
