31st Sunday after Pentecost Holy Fathers Matthew 1:1-25 Matthew 1:17-25 The Genealogy of Jesus Christ 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations. Christ Born of Mary 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. 22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us. 24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus. Sunday before Christmas Last Sunday was the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers, which is always celebrated two Sundays before the Nativity. This Sunday is the Sunday of the Holy Fathers, and Nativity follows shortly thereafter on Thursday. This is part of our preparation for the great feast of our Lord s incarnation. We have already been preparing by fasting. Now the pace is quickening. You can feel it. Let us ask ourselves why is it that we have this particular reading, about the genealogy of Christ, on the Sunday before the Nativity? What is it that the Church

is trying to teach us, and why do we remember the Holy Fathers today? In the Gospel passage, Matthew 1:1-25, the first eighteen verses are devoted to a selective recount of Jesus' genealogy. The main message is that God worked throughout the numerous generations from Adam to Abraham to David to Joseph to help prepare the way, to help prepare His people for the coming of the Messiah through the person of the Virgin Mary. We commemorate the Holy Forefathers and Fathers, because they indeed were part of the preparation for Christ. Without them, there would have been no God-man, Jesus Christ, because He was born of a woman, who was of their lineage, and, if this is not exactly so in a physical sense, their prophesies and piety prepared the way for the coming of Christ. That was part of God s plan. We Orthodox Christians never forget from whence we are come from. We not only remember that we are from the dust of the earth, but we also remember those who have preceded us, and indeed, are joined to us, in piety, and in faith, and in struggle. We never feel disassociated from our history. The second part of this Gospel passage is devoted to the events occurring shortly before the birth of Jesus. We hear that Mary is pregnant by the Holy Spirit of God and Joseph, her husband, wants to put her away quietly so she may not be publicly scorned, persecuted or even killed because of her apparent transgression. Before He can do this, an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph to explain what has happened and tell him what to do. The angel says that the Child's name will be "Jesus" for He will save His people from their sins (v.21). However, the salvation of mankind cannot happen against our own will. It cannot be forced upon us. Mary could have said no to God's invitation/command through the Archangel Gabriel at the Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38). But she said yes, "Let it be to me according to your word" (v.38). As we hear today, Joseph could have still put away his pregnant fiancée, even after the angel told him what to do. But after Joseph awoke from sleep, "he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took her as his wife" (Matthew 1:24). In other words, both Mary and Joseph were freely obedient to the Lord to help enact His plan for saving the world from sin. In Christ, the salvation is completed and endowed, but God does not save us by force, without the participation of our own free will. Because everyone, every 8

person should freely accept the salvation from God, completed by Christ and to become God s coworker in his own salvation. And this colaboration is consisted of our participation in the life of the Church, where all salvific means are gived: prayer, repentence, fast, confession... The goal of this celebration is Christmas, as universal and cosmic Event, to become our personal Christmas, that is Christ to be born in our own hearts and to fill us with His peace, life and love. As we come near to Christmas, what we should have in mind? What are we celebrating on Christmas? What is Christmas all about? Christmas is fulfilment of God s promises to God s people in the Old Testament sacred history, fulfilment of the expected salvation through the Promised Messiah. What we call the Incarnation, or literally the "enfleshment", is the second person of the Holy Trinity, the eternal Word and Son of God (the second person of the Holy Trinity), taking on human flesh of the ever-virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit (the third person of the Holy Trinity). This is the beginning of the salvation of man, it is the beginning of a cosmic renewal, the remaking of the whole world. Every feast in the Church has one and only goal communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. Without realization of this goal, we can not speak about religious and pious glorification of God. If the main goal while we re welcoming the Christ s birth is the communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ, then we should have that in mind with regard to the customs that are present in these pre-nativity days. In our church-folk tradition, related to celebration of Christmas, there are some customs that have pagan origin, to which later on was added some Christian meaning. For example, the custom of Colede fire. That fire can symbolize Christ Who is the true Light that enlighten every man that comes into the world, and we represent the shepherds in that unusual night, who tremulously expect the joyful news about the birth of the Savior. In that sense, that celebration should be above all spiritual, where the focus is on the prayerful expectation of Christ's birth (with participation in the church 9

services and singing of Christmas carols). And we must be aware not to violate the fast, for it is still time of fasting and expectation. Also, in our tradition during this week various customs are present, for example the Christmas-Eve dinner which includes Lenten meal, bread with a coin and sharing the bread among domestic etc. There is diversity in these church-folk traditions, and that diversity is allowed, because all of these customs are embodying a general theological idea: the Bread represents the virgin womb of the Theotokos, who superbly conceived the Son of God 2. But, this family Christmas-Eve dinner will be meaningless, if we do not keep the fast on it and therefore we deprive ourselves from partaking the Holy Communion on Christmas Liturgy. If we do not take this time today, and in the remaining days to prepare ourselves for Nativity, we will MISS it. We may come to church, but we will miss the incarnation. It will not touch us. A man must be prepared for anything that is of value. We must prepare, so that we can inculcate virtue into our hearts, and know what it is that the Lord wants us to know. Now, as Christians, we prepare not as the world prepares. The world prepares with frivolity, and partying. As Christmas come near, let our Lenten endeavor be strengthen and be aware not to violate the fasting with frivolity and looseness before this great Feast. Everything will be meaningless unless we pay attention to the more important, that is the spiritual and prayerful preparation for Christ s birth in our soul, receiving Him prepared with fasting and confession. Because, at the bottom line, true celebration and glorification of God is completed with attending the church services and communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ. 2 The custom of breaking and sharing the bread with a coin is connected with St. Basil s day (Vasilitza) also, which is more accurate. The custom is rooted in the life of St. Basil the Great, who helped the poor secretly giving them bread with golden coin. 10

Troparion of Forefeast of the Nativity Make ready, Bethlehem, Eden has been opened to all. Prepare Ephratha, for the Tree of life has blossomed in the cave from the Holy Virgin. Her womb was a spiritual Paradise, wherein the divine and saving Tree is found. If we eat it we shall live and not die like Adam. Christ is born to raise up the image that of old had fallen. Kontakion of Forefeast of the Nativity Today the Virgin is coming to the cave to give birth to God the Word ineffable, Who was before all the ages. Rejoice at the message, O earth; with the Angels and Shepherds give glory to Him Who was willing to be seen as a young Child Who before the ages is God. Eternal God (an old Orthodox Christmas carol) 1.Eternal God descends and in the womb of the Virgin has placed. Holy, holy, holy are You, O Merciful Lord! 2.King and Lord of all The One that created Adam has come. Cherub, cherub, rejoice holy Lady! 3.Nativity teaches us and rejoice us and angelic hosts are amazed. Terirem, terirem, rejoice Most Pure Lady! 4.Let us draw near to the cave And see the Lord lying in a manger. Holy, holy, holy are You, O Merciful Lord! 5.Magi are coming from the East bringing worthy gifts. Cherub, cherub, rejoice holy Lady! 6.When Herod heard about the event, has shaken and embittered. Terirem, terirem, rejoice Most Pure Lady! 7.Heaven celebrate and rejoice, and the angels praise. Holy, holy, holy are You, O Merciful Lord! 8.Rejoice creatures, and celebrate nature. Cherub, cherub, rejoice holy Lady! 9.Let us praise the Lord Christ our Lord, The One born in a cave. Terirem, terirem, rejoice Most Pure Lady! 10.O Virgin, Mother and Lady, save those who resort to you. Holy, holy, holy are You, O Merciful Lord! 11
