2 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2016 FROM FATHER TOM Living in Light and Life LIVING IN THE BRIGHT HOPE OF THE RESURRECTION By Fr. Thomas Chininis During the month of June this year the Church celebrates the feasts of Ascension of our Lord and Pentecost. The celebration of both of these feasts is dependent upon the feast of all feasts, Pascha. As we continue to greet one another with the joyous proclamation, Christ is Risen we do so with eyes and hearts filled with the never waning light of Christ. This is the light guiding our footsteps as we navigate through life in this world. Each one of us faces challenges to our physical and spiritual health. We are constantly bombarded by the darkness of the Evil One. We are annually reminded of two things at Pascha. First, that with Christ, the Light and Life of the world, our lives always have hope. This is what our faith provides us. As St. John tells us in his Universal Epistle, God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. (1 Jn 1:5) No matter how dimly lit our life may seem; no matter how far we seem from the light; no matter how alone we may feel or how much we may despair, Christ, the light of the world, is with us. He offered Himself for us upon the cross and took upon himself all that could lead us to this despair. This is not because He died, but because He destroyed the eternal darkness of the tomb by His Resurrection. This leads us to the second point. There is a change in our perspective of life. Before the resurrection we viewed this world from life to death. Following His resurrection we find in the empty tomb a new perspective. In the Gospel of John, in the passage traditionally read at funeral services, we are told that our view of life is now different, we have passed from death to life. (Jn 5:24) This is reiterated in the Paschal hymns, especially the most well known hymn, Christ is Risen. The hymn ends with the words, He has granted life to those in the tombs ingraining in our being our new perspective on our existence, death to life. Also, the first Katavasia of Pascha clearly emphasizes the same point, For Christ, our God, has passed us, who sing the triumphal hymn from death to life and from earth to heaven. In fact, the word Pascha itself identifies this passing from death to life. Pascha means Passover. Easter, then, is the new Passover. The Old Testament event of Passover identifies how God saved the Jews as the spirit of death passes over the believers. In the new Passover, Pascha, death is not just passed over, but destroyed, bringing life through the Resurrection. Death to life. We now live in the bright hope of the Resurrection. In faith we no longer fear death, but look at it as a transition from one life to another. With our hearts still filled with this great joy and hope, and our eyes still fixed on the brightness of the Paschal Light, we witness and share in Christ s promise. And I will ask the Father to send to you the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth. (Jn 14:26) For this to take place Christ must return to His Heavenly Father and so He ascends to heaven in a cloud. (Acts 1:9) He had already given us a great gift in His Body and Blood, the Eucharist, with a promise that we would be one with Him. To ensure that we continue to live in Him, our Heavenly Father establishes a community with the grace and authority to take this message to the whole world. With tongues of fire on Pentecost, the disciples, Christ s followers and students, become the apostles, those sent out to proclaim the message of God s saving grace, ~ His light and Life ~ that will carry each one of us, with all of our imperfections to His eternal kingdom. We no longer live from life to death but death to life. PAGE 2

3 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2016 PARISH COUNCIL NEWS President s Report by Christian Zouzas, Parish Council President Lowell Collegiate Charter School (LCCS) Scheduled Departure Well it's hard to believe 3 years have passed since the LCCS began. It feels like yesterday, yet it was three years ago that we spent July and August coordinating with construction crews and city and state inspectors for the opening of the Charter School. It came right down to the wire, Labor Day weekend, but we finalized the permits for the school s opening. Well now this July and August is like dejavu, since we ll be spending the summer once again coordinating the removal of the modulars and restoring the interior of the Church to its previous condition. Transfiguration church has played a huge and vital role in the education of over 300 inner city kids living right in the acre. As these young kids grow and become adults I hope they will look back fondly on the Transfiguration and their memories with us. May God Bless the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church PLEASE NOTE: Fr. Tom will be out of the office, attending the Clergy-Laity Congress July 4-8. Please contact the parish office in case of emergency. 4 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2016 Stewardship Report THOSE THAT SEEK THE LORD SHALL NEVER BE IN WANT OF ANY GOOD THING by Olivia Sintros, Stewardship Reporter Recently we received in the mail our stewardship offering statement. As always, please feel free to call the church office with any questions or concerns. We thank those stewards who have, in whatever way they have chosen, made a commitment to the needs of the church, whether it be through annual giving, monthly giving, weekly giving, or perhaps through an online giving program such as ParishPay. As summer approaches, and we enjoy the lazy, hazy days we sometimes neglect the fact that the church continues even though the Sunday School year comes to an end and the choir takes a hiatus. The bills continue to come, Vacation Church Camp plans are underway, the needy are still in need. Although we thank those who have made their commitment, many have not. This would be a great time to complete the enclosed stewardship information and forward it back to the church in the enclosed envelope. Please remember to think weekly as you pondered your pledge to the church. Of course, we are always very appreciative of an addition to an existing pledge. Our Stewardship of time, talent and treasure provides the foundation for the growth of our Parish Ministries. We need YOU! 2016 Stewardship May as of 5/31/16 Participating stewards 230 Total pledged $100,331 Received to date $73,505 Budgeted stewardship goal $185,000 Overall budgeted goal $285,000 Parish Council Report NOTES FROM THE MAY AND JUNE MEETINGS by Amanda Apostolou, Parish Council Secretary The council met on May 15 and June 12. Below are a few items that were discussed: May 15 meeting: The Kitchen and Hall Committee has chosen an architect to draft a plan to present to the parish. The parish council approved the use of estimated $1,500 to be used out of the Kitchen and Hall account to cover the architect fee of $70/hr. The Lafayette Club has committed 5 violations since the beginning of their lease, most recently replacing the Outreach Center sign with their own. Our lawyer, Phillip Eliopolous, sent a letter giving them 20 days to remedy or they will be in breach of their lease, and we will take further action. June 12 meeting: The Lafayette Club has addressed only 1 of the 5 violations that we asked them to fix. The council has decided to give them one additional week to comply. If they fail to do so, Phillip Eliopolous will send them a letter notifying that further action will be taken. On June 25, the school will begin stripping down the modular classrooms. National Grid will cut power beginning June 27. Christian will be onsite during the summer to oversee the transition and meet with city inspectors. The school s interior belongings will likely be here through the end of August. PAGE 4

12 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2016 Philoptochos Literacy Day Project 2016 by Olivia Sintros With much appreciation and thank you, thank you, thank you.. The students at the Charles W. Morey Elementary School in the Highlands section of Lowell were this year s enormously appreciative recipients of book bags and books to support the school s summer reading initiative. Through the generosity of parishioners and friends, Philoptochos was able to present the students with bright orange book bags (their school color) adorned with the design of a tiger (their school mascot). At the Morey school all students grades K-4 were given the opportunity to choose five books. Words cannot express the excitement on the children s faces as they choose their favorites. We PHOTO BY ELLEN DOBI gratefully thank the continued generosity of our parishioners and friends who have enabled us to donate books bags and books to the children of Lowell since To date we have distributed approximately 14,000 books and have supported the summer reading initiative in eight elementary schools including our own Lowell Collegiate Charter School. A special thanks to Philoptochos members Ellen Dobi, Soula Spaziani, Karen Mitropoulis, Jill Laganas and Pat Mahoney who were present to witness firsthand the appreciation felt at the Morey from students and staff alike. Coincidently, and randomly, one little Cambodian boy said to Pat, I know how to say eight in Greek. He indeed did and when asked how he knew, he said his teacher Mrs. Mahoney taught him. How funny. 16 JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2016 PARISH GROUPS (CONTINUED) From the Loft By Chuck Karayianis Interim Choir Director Greetings and good wishes for a healthy summer. The Transfiguration Choir began its summer break on June 19 with the service of Pentecost and the service of kneeling. We thank Fr. Tom, Deacon John and the chanters for leading us through our Paschal journey and look forward to a new liturgical year. The Transfiguration Choir is one of the most talented and versatile groups many of us have ever been involved with. The melodic sopranos blend their voices with the harmonic altos and the tenors and baritones keep pace with all. The many parishioners who sing along with the choir each Sunday blend their voices for all to sing the praises of God with joy. Thank you all for contributing to our musical ministry. See you in church.
