1 July/August 2018 Monthly / Issue No. 5 TRANSFIGURATION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Fr. Tom Chininis, Pastor Philoptochos Literacy Project PROMOTING A LOVE FOR READING by Olivia Sintros The Pawtucket Memorial Elementary School in Lowell was this year s recipient of book bags and books to support the school s summer reading program. At Pawtucket this year, all 526 students were given the opportunity to choose three to four just right books. Just right books are books that the children are able to read on their own depending on their reading level. Words cannot express the excitement on the children s faces while they choose their favorite books, and asked the question, Can we keep them? We gratefully thank the continued generosity of our parishioners and friends who have enabled us to donate books to the children of Lowell since Since then, we have distributed approximately 18,750 books and have supported summer reading initiatives in eleven elementary schools in Lowell. With four more schools to go, please keep those books coming. Continued on page 2 PHOTO BY OLIVIA SINTROS Sometimes choosing which book you want is easy sometimes it is a difficult choice, but one the children of Pawtucket Memorial Elementary School loved to make. 2 PARISH COUNCIL NEWS President s Message THE CRAZY, HAZY, BUT NOT LAZY DAYS OF SUMMER by Olivia Sintros, Parish Council President According to the old song lyrics, July and August bring on the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Even before we entered July, the Golf Outing steering committee met to begin plans for our 8 th Annual Transfiguration Golf Outing. You need not be a golfer to support the Outing in some way. Please check out the enclosed Golf Outing flyer. This summer s Community Kitchen will be held on July 24 and August 28. Please come and enjoy a lovely lunch with family, friends and neighbors. August 5-6 celebrates the feast day of the Transfiguration with a Vespers reception and next day luncheon. Our 23 rd annual Vacation Church Camp (VCC) follows August VCC offers a wonderful program of faith, fellowship, and fun to our young people.it s never too late to register or to offer assistance! Again this summer, through the FOCUS program (Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve), we are looking for backpack sponsors. For just $20 per child, we can offer needy children a backpack filled with supplies for back to school. July 14 and August 11 are our regularly scheduled nights for sponsoring and serving a meal at the Lowell Transitional Living Center. If you have never been, arrangements can be made to support your first visit. Please call the office or sign up in church. Well, hazy and crazy maybe lazy, I don t think so! Enjoy your summer and please join us. Literacy Continued from front page A special thanks to Philoptochos President and Billerica town librarian Ellen Dobi for her never-ending support of the program. Another special thanks to co-chair Karen Mitropoulis for her generosity in donating books and bookmarks, not to mention getting so many autographed books from her friend and author/ illustrator Peter Reynolds. Thanks to Karen s persistence and love for the program, each year Peter Reynolds has offered many personalized books to the children of the city. Another sincere thanks goes out to a very generous parish family who donated the book bags but wishes to remain anonymous. And as we know, it does take a village to make this all happen; so, many thanks to Amanda Apostolou, Pat Mahoney, Daphne Easton, Ellen Dobi, Beth Donovan, Erin Sintros, and Pam Sintros for their help in sorting the thousands of books. Also, thanks to Spike Sintros and Lisa Abramovich for delivering the twenty-five bins totaling 2,500 books and to Toula and Arthur Sparages, Soula Spaziani, and Pat Mahoney for book distribution. As I close, under the heading of kids say the funniest things one third grader was given his book bag and as he proceeded down the hall he was greeted by a teacher who said she liked the bag. The little boy turned to her and said, God gave it to me. His friend quickly corrected him and said, It wasn t God, it was a church. Our Apologies. We extend our thanks for the following Holy Week and Pascha donations that were either acknowledged errantly or omitted: Arthur Kostoulakos (not Koufagazos) The Skrekas family for the Resurrection Easter Lily donation in loving memory of Debbie Skrekas. Tom or Olivia Sintros. Help us continue this wonderful program for HOPE/JOY families! HOPE/JOY NEEDS YOUR TIME & TALENT! Philoptochos "Clothing for Cash" Fall Fundraiser Please put aside your textiles! A fundraiser is being planned for some time in September. We are asking all parishioners to fill bags with textiles in any condition. This includes clothing, curtains, blankets, towels, belts, pocketbooks and shoes/boots. Philoptochos will earn money for every pound we donate, so we really need folks to clean their closets, attics and basements! A key to our success last time around was based on seeking donations from friends and relatives. So don't be shy spread the word! You'll be doing folks a favor by accepting their contributions. Donating to this cause is a win-win for all. The textiles are sorted for us. Many items can be resold by the Epilepsy Foundation, and other items will be recycled but avoid filling up our landfills. If you have any questions, please contact Sandra Gulezian at gulezians@gmail.com. If you'd like to help with this very easy fundraiser, please let her know! PAGE 8
