For the Love of Liturgy Episode 1 This Fall we held two All Ministry Workshops where we studied Church documents and then discussed the various Liturgical ministries. From those discussions came some enhancements to the Liturgy which we would like to share with our larger community. Before sharing them, we wanted to give everyone some insights as to why we are moving in this direction. This will be the first in an ongoing series called For the Love of Liturgy The Lectionary The Lectionary is the large book the lector reads from at Mass. It is a selection of carefully chosen scriptures that rotates on a three-year cycle that changes each Advent. There are four scripture readings at Sunday Mass, the First Reading, the Psalm, the Second Reading, and the Gospel. In the scriptures, God speaks to us. At Mass, God speaks to a particular people gathered at a particular time in a particular place. The word will affect us in different ways. Each person will hear the message uniquely, as the Holy Spirit reaches into the hearts of us all to place within them the message that comes from God. To work this miracle, God chooses instruments. God chooses lectors. (Guide for Lectors, Virginia Meagher and Fr. Paul Turner) A New Table for the Lectionary The Lectionary will have a new resting spot starting in Advent giving it a bit more dignity. A small table will be positioned just across from the Credence table which holds the dishes for the Mass. The Lector will retrieve the Lectionary from this new table and return it there after the Second Reading. Proclaiming the Psalm from the ambo Another thing you may notice is that the cantor, that is, a singer, may proclaim the Psalm from the same place as the other readings, the ambo. This is to raise awareness that the Psalm is indeed one of the chosen scriptures meant to enhance our spiritual journey and therefore preferred to be proclaimed from the ambo like the other scriptures. When the Lectionary was revised after Vatican II, the Responsorial Psalm selected for each Sunday and solemnity was intentionally related to the first reading by similarity of text, content, or mood. The psalm s relationship to the Liturgy of the Word does not end there, however. The framers of the Lectionary chose the Gospel readings first, then carefully selected the first readings. Each first reading was chosen because of some correlation with the Gospel to which it was assigned. (The Ministry of Cantors, Sr. Kathleen Harmon) Communion song will start earlier The last thing you may notice starting in Advent is that the Communion song will begin as soon as we respond: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. This is true to the church documents and helps us focus on joining in right away with joyful hearts in spiritual union instead of watching the Presider receive, the minsters receive, and then finally the gathered assembly receive Communion. While the Priest is receiving the Sacrament, the Communion Chant is begun, its purpose being to express the spiritual union of the communicants by means of the unity of their voices, to show gladness of heart, and to bring out more clearly the communitarian character of the procession to receive the Eucharist. The singing is prolonged for as long as the Sacrament is being administered to the faithful. Care should be taken that singers, too, can receive Communion with ease. (86 General Instruction of the Roman Missal) Continued on next page

Because the Communion song will now start at the beginning of the Communion rite, the musicians will receive Communion after everyone else has been served. Two Eucharistic Ministers will wait at the center aisle facing the altar for the song to finish and then the musicians will come over to receive. There will be more enhancements to our Liturgy that will come out as the year goes on to help us further understand and celebrate the Eucharist. If you have any questions please contact Sue Valois at the Parish Center. Global Potluck On November 12, eighty-five members of Corpus Christi listened to the immigration stories of Esther Karanja and Lydie Rose Feliho and enjoyed feasting on foods from around the world at the Global potluck. Both women and their families were beneficiaries of the Green Card Lottery. Anyone from qualifying countries can get their green card if their name is chosen from among the many applying. The lottery is designed to ensure diversity in US immigration, so only individuals from countries underrepresented in US immigration are usually allowed to apply. (No money is involved.) Lydie Rose is from Benin and she told of how her faith helped her on the difficult journey of leaving her home to come to a place where she didn t know the language or have any family or friends besides her husband and children. Through prayer and fasting, she prepared to take her nursing exam after only a few years here and she passed. Remember, she knew no English when she arrived. Amazing! Esther and her family are from Kenya. She also told of how she prayed and fasted, hoping to be selected in the lottery. She was an active member of her church in Kenya but because her marriage was just a traditional one, and not blessed by the church, she was facing the difficult choice of giving up her church ministry or her marriage. Once she won the lottery, she was able to convince her husband to get a marriage license! We can learn from the faith of these strong women. Prayer and fasting work. Immigration helps to increase the diversity of our nation and it is has been severely reduced by the Trump administration. As people of faith, we are called to welcome the immigrant and to be active members in society. We must hold our members of Congress accountable for just immigration policy. We should be advocating for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and immigration reform. The U.S. Catholic Council of Bishops have a website for immigration policy, Please visit, learn about immigration and take action. DeeAnn Stenlund

Advent Meal & Reconciliation Please join us on Wednesday, December 13 at 5:30 pm for an Advent meal. Enjoy the community as you take a break from the rush of Christmas preparations to enjoy a pizza dinner. Bring the entire family, sit, relax and enjoy the company of fellow parishioners. Following the meal all are invited to stay for the Sacrament of Reconciliation at 6:30 pm in the Church. Please sign up in the Gathering Area or call Epiphany Pageant On Sunday, January 7, after the 9:30 am Mass will be our fourth annual Epiphany Pageant. All children are invited to participate in this fun morning, as we tell the story of the baby Jesus. Following the pageant will be a chili cook off. Everyone is invited to make a pot of chili and enter it into our friendly competition to see whose chili reigns supreme. Please watch the bulletin for more information to sign up your children/youth for the pageant, as well as to volunteer with the pageant and cook off. Christmas Caroling Our middle school and high school youth will have the night off of Faith Formation classes on Wednesday, December 20. Those still in town will meet at St. Anthony Park Home for Christmas caroling. On Line Giving With the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year s holiday season upon us, and the opportunity for families to travel to be together to celebrate, please don t forget to keep up your Stewardship commitment to Corpus Christi when you are away. One way is to go to the donation page on the parish website. An easy way to get there is with this QR Code. Giving Garden The Giving Garden has ended another successful growing season, harvesting and delivering 7225 pounds of fresh vegetables to Keystone Community Food Shelf. This is a group effort, requiring many volunteers to achieve such a feat. Forty-eight volunteers, including many of our youth from Give and Grin, spent a least an hour in the garden, planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting. The garden was also shared with two immigrant families, who planted and cared for their own plots on the south end of the garden. They were truly grateful to be able have a plot of land to work and grow vegetables for their families. The garden has been in production for six years and, over that time, the good earth has shared 44,545 pounds of food (22 tons!) To continue to be successful, we need everyone s continued prayers and help in the garden. Please consider this opportunity to help next spring. No experience necessary! DeeAnn Stenlund

Stewardship Prayer, Participation and Generosity We have all been entrusted with gifts from God, gifts that are intended to be used in making God s vineyard fruitful. Stewardship is a way of thanking God for all our blessings by returning to God a portion of the many gifts (everything we have-our time, talent, and treasure) that we have been given. As stewards of these gifts we are called to use them in building up the Kingdom. We are sharing the testimony of some of our parishioners regarding what being involved in ministry at Corpus Christi means to them. Prayerfully discern how God is calling you. Linda Sandbo Hi, my name is Linda Sandbo. I grew up in this parish. I was baptized, confirmed, and married at Corpus Christi. Yesterday, John and I celebrated 28 years of marriage. I am so grateful for the people of Corpus Christi, Thank you For Fr. Nygaard who married us. For Kay Barrett who was my faith formation teacher in elementary school who taught me that the story of Jesus was real and not fiction; For the musicians who bring the church to life, for Sheila Enzenauer who sang at my wedding; For Nancy & Dick Wenkel who organize the Leisure Center activities that my mom enjoys; For our Faith Formation leaders past and present and for the incredible parents of our youth who share their faith in our classrooms. For Tom Dohm, my children s Confirmation Prayer partner. My sister Carol s example planted the seed of desire for me to be involved in our church community. She was active in many ministries in her teens and as a young adult. I had a desire to be involved too, but I didn t really know what to be involved in. It seemed to me she had it covered. But she planted the seed in me! When my children were young I started volunteering in the faith formation classrooms and got hooked. All of a sudden, I d see more faces at church I knew, and my Corpus Christi community felt even closer knit. I now look forward to Wednesday nights, as an 8 th grade Catechist. I enjoy the energy that the middle school youth have, the music and ministry they share as a group, and the learning and reflecting that we do. Through this stewardship I ve grown more intentional in my practice of the faith. And every day, I pray that I will trust in God. I ask that you pray and find what s deep in your heart. Don t wait! Choose an activity! There are lots of opportunities at Corpus Christi to be involved. Join me on this stewardship journey!

Phil Schrumpf, Befriender/Eucharistic Minister For those who don t know me, my name is Phil Schrumpf. I have been a member of Corpus Christi for about 5 years after moving here once retired. My wife, Mary and I chose this community after going to several churches mainly because of the experiences and involvement we had with Father Fitz in Little Canada, and the people of this community and how welcome we felt here. We have felt part of this family from day one and have been thankful for the faith and caring attitudes of each and every one of you. Our faith and involvement here has inspired our lives with many blessings. I have been asked to speak briefly about two very important community ministries here at Corpus Christi, visiting our homebound parishioners as either a Befriender or Eucharistic minister. My first involvement with volunteer groups was with the help of two very important parishioners here, and both were very helpful to me with guidance and the spiritual importance of working with the home bound. A special thank you to Mary Ellen Brown and Mary Meyer. Both of you are hard to say no to! For the next few minutes I would like to share my experiences with both of these programs. I ve always felt that God doesn t give us anything we can t handle, sometimes I ve had to rethink that thought. My first couple was assigned to me by our pastoral Minister. We had long talks about the program, its importance and the two parishioners, each with a different set of needs and concerns. At first, I was reluctant, however after meeting Betty and Robert, they soon became part of my weekly eucharistic schedule as well as making me feel part of their family. Betty required a lot of medical care at home and at times would need to be hospitalized and then placed in a nursing home until she could go home. I would visit her in the nursing home to pray and bring the eucharist to her. Even though her health continued to fail, her faith in God never wavered. Robert is a WWII veteran and I have enjoyed listening to the many stories of his life experiences. After several years, it occurred to me that I was not just their Eucharistic minister, but had become a befriender to both of them. Betty passed on a few years ago, and I have continued to meet with Bob, sometimes having lunch and staying for longer visits. The pastoral minister also assignment me as a befriender four years ago to a member who was in a care facility. Gene was a physical therapist and developed a debilitating disease. He had many different people visiting him over the years through a program at the University of Minnesota. It took several visits for both of us to feel comfortable with each other, and through prayer, discussions about the church community and what s new here at Corpus, medical chats, and a game called cribbage, we became friends. Gene has become a very important part of my life, as when I was medically retired, I felt sorry for myself after years of patient care, and felt God had closed the door on that part of my life, but I realized a new chapter in my life had started by working with the homebound who have become such an important part of my life. So, I realized I had nothing to feel sorry for. There s nothing like the smile I get when I walk into the facility and meet Gene or see Bob at his house. I now see Gene twice a week because I think the visits are beneficial for both of us. For those of you who have the time to volunteer, there is nothing more important than visiting members of our community who need comfort, prayer and companionship. Please consider sharing your time and talent by volunteering for this important ministry. We are all blessed with special gifts, and sharing those gifts with those in need, you will soon realize that doing something so simple as a visit is really doing what God intended of all of us, to take care of each other, especially those who are in need. By just bringing a smile and giving a little of your time to lighten someone s day is a true blessing. When we share our God given talents, our community here at Corpus is enriched and our faith strengthened as individuals and as a family.

Elena Harrington Good morning/evening, I'm Lena and I'm a senior at Roseville Area High School. I have been coming to a Corpus Christi for as long as I can remember. I went with my grandma who was an active parishioner and my family continued coming here even after she passed away. I love the community at Corpus Christi; before I got involved, I used to be bored whenever I went to church; but now this place feels like a second home and I have met so many wonderful people who inspire me and help me be more like Jesus every day. In my freshman year, I joined the Wednesday night band for Faith Formation and was an aide for Sunday school. Since then I have also participated in the mission trips, played at Mass, become a teen mentor, and a Sunday School catechist. Of course, this makes my life very busy, but also very fulfilling. Coming here every Wednesday and Sunday is a break from my hectic life but it's also a way to help give others that sense of peace in the middle of their craziness. Knowing that I m making someone s day more enjoyable by playing the violin or by teaching them about God makes me feel overjoyed, it's an experience everyone should have. I'm so blessed to be a part of a community that supports me and have a place to share my gifts. There are many things to get involved in at Corpus Christi that can suit everyone's time and talents. I hope all of you are able to find something that gives you the same happiness I feel when I'm here. And as said in 1 Peter 4:10, Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God s grace in its various forms. So I ask you to consider What gift you can share in our community? Thank you Bill Brady Hi! My name is Bill Brady. Ever since moving to Falcon Heights nearly 20 years ago, my wife Cheryl and I have been part of the Corpus Christi community. I say the community purposefully, because it is the sense of community we found here that first attracted us and has kept us coming back. There are many parts to Corpus Christi, but we re all one body, supporting each other on our spiritual journeys. Cheryl and I both grew up in strong Catholic parishes that offered a wide variety of opportunities to put our faith in action. We found similar opportunities here. One of those was the chance to volunteer with Project Home, the emergency shelter for homeless families, hosted and staffed by a rotating group of faith communities around St. Paul. We started volunteering as a family when our kids were young. We generally volunteer during the summer, which means that when the homeless families arrive at about 6 p.m., there s a good 2 and half hours of daylight left for the kids to wear you out at the playground. I remember one time I went over to the park at about six with one of the boys and tossed a football around. After a while he grabbed a baseball bat and wanted me to pitch to him. Next, he dragged me over to the tennis court. Finally, we hit the swing sets. Man, I was drained! I took a look at my watch. It was 6:27. I still had 90 minutes to go on my shift! So, yes, an evening at Project Home can be exhausting, but it s also uplifting. The kids are just great. They are not so different than we were as youngsters. Both Cheryl and I come from lower middle-class backgrounds. We didn t have much, but things worked out for us, thanks to our strong loving families, a caring and supportive village, (as the African proverb puts it) and the kindness of strangers. We feel blessed, and our Project Home volunteering is one small way of trying to pay that blessing forward. At Corpus Christi, it s just one of many ways at your disposal. From singing in the choir to hosting hospitality after Mass which is a great way to meet people -- to harvesting vegetables from the community garden there are activities to match whatever gifts you bring to the table. I invite you to prayerfully consider joining us in the stewardship of the Corpus Christi parish community.

Eve Brown Good afternoon sisters and brothers in Christ. My name is Eve Brown. I ve been a member of Corpus Christi Parish since When my husband and I moved here from St. Patrick s parish in Inver Grove Heights, we went to several churches and finally settled on Corpus Christi. I liked the size and architecture of the church building. I just feel closer to God and the community in a smaller building. My husband liked the absence of kneelers after his knee replacement. We both enjoyed the music and liturgical dancers. While I had been a lector and distributor of the Eucharist at my previous parishes, it wasn t until after my husband died in 2013 that I decided to volunteer as a lector here at Corpus Christi. God gave me a good strong voice, and while I sing with enthusiasm, but not always on key, I can read the word of God. So that s how I praise Him, with my voice. The first time I was a lector, I was so nervous my knees were knocking, and after Mass, I asked my husband what he thought. He said, I don t know, the mic wasn t on and I couldn t hear you. Since then I ve relaxed and tried to read with L.S.D Loudly, Slowly, and Distinctly, because, as I age, my hearing isn t as sharp as it once was. I don t want anyone to miss the word of the Lord because they couldn t hear or understand me. Now the Masses where I am scheduled as a lector are the most inclusive form of worship for me. I really feel a part of the celebration and the community. The advance preparation during the week with the work book (Yes, you get a workbook with the phonetic pronunciations of those difficult biblical names) and the insights into the readings enhance the celebration of the mass for me. Even though I was nervous, I m so glad I became a lector back in the 70 s when women were first allowed on the altar. It has made all the difference for me as a worshipping member of the community. We all have gifts to share that will help build up the Body of Christ, which is what Corpus Christi is all about. If you think you too might praise God with your voice, I encourage you to join the choir or just sing out from the congregation and/or become a lector. Oh, and one last thing If you are a new parishioner, it s a great way to meet the other members of this friendly parish. Try it, you ll like it. Kate Huelskamp Hello, I m Kate Huelskamp. I first joined this Corpus Christi in second grade and I m really glad my parents decided to come here. But it wasn t always like that. When I was younger, I felt that Church was just something I HAD to come to on Sundays, like most kids do. Around sixth grade, I started volunteering here. First, I was a Sunday School Aide, then after Confirmation, I became a Teen Mentor and I joined Wednesday Night Band. That really helped me to connect with the other kids my age and meet older people besides my parents who were passionate about their faith. Church stopped being a word that I said with a sigh, and it started becoming something I enjoyed. Being a Eucharistic minster helped me grow deeper in my faith as it allowed me to participate more in one of the greatest mysteries in the Church. As a Communion minister and as a musician, I get to add to everyone s experience at mass and on Wednesday nights. Sure, not everyone is old enough to e be a Eucharistic Minister, and some of you are just a little bit above the age range for Wednesday Nights Band, but there are plenty more options for everybody. So I encourage you to find a way to pair what you love with your faith. Thank you.

Chris Wheaton Hi, my name is Chris Wheaton and I have been a member of Saint Rose for 10 years, but my family regularly worships here where I often serve as a lector for the Sunday evening mass. My wife, Karen, and I have two daughters at St. Rose and both come from strong Catholic families and educations as each of us attended Catholic schools through college. After college, I attend law school at the University of St. Thomas where I was afforded an opportunity and encouraged to integrate faith and reason in the pursuit of truth and justice. Upon graduation and passing the bar (just as the economy was in global meltdown) I went into private practice representing the working poor in federal consumer rights litigation. As my practice developed, my faith was shaken at witnessing a never-ending string of cases where my clients were dehumanized in the quest for financial institutions to maximize profits at the expense of real people trying to survive the Great Recession. It was at the 5-year mark that I began to lose faith in what I was doing and was starting to wonder if my career was congruent with my faith and relationship with Christ. I began to feel like I was going through the motions at work and in my faith life. In short, I was in badly need of change. To combat a growing apathy, I did two things: First, I found a spiritual advisor who guided me though The Spiritual Exercise of St. Ignatius (a compilation of meditations, prayers, and contemplative practices developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola to help people deepen their relationship with God). It was there I was able to re-connect with God through Ignatian imaginative prayer and using St. Ignatius s daily Examen to aid in my spiritual and career discernment. Second, I began lectoring at St. Rose where I felt I could more deeply understand the Word of God by sharing it with others through ministry. Eventually, I met Sue Valois (with whom I served on the St. Rose School Advisory Committee). Sue invited me to Corpus Christi for Mass and I was immediately hooked by the intimate surroundings, welcoming community and connection to St. Rose. I felt like I had found a new spiritual home. Through my preparation for lectoring, I work to gain a deeper understanding of scripture, the author s views and context, and the application of God s Word to everyday life, career, family, and my ongoing Ignatian Contemplation. Corpus Christi has been a place where I can continually grow in my faith, make new friends, and experience exciting new ways to worship such Corpus Christi s liturgical dance and the amazing Sunday evening music. In short, I believe that this community is helping me be a better instrument of God s peace. As Catholics, we are often asked to offer our time, talent, or treasure to our community in service of Christ s mission. I d like to take this time today to request that you reflect on your faith and role in this wonderful community. I ask that, if you feel called, you think about sharing your talents with our community. Corpus Christi has been a very special place in my spiritual growth and I hope in yours as well. Thank you.
