It is a good idea that Catholics learn more about the real story. Galileo proposed that the earth revolved around the sun, a theory called heliocentricity. Centuries earlier, Aristotle had refuted heliocentricity, and by Galileo s time, nearly every major thinker believed in the geocentric view that the stars and moon revolved around the earth. History shows that the Catholic Church has supported scientific study for centuries. During Galileo s time, the Jesuits had a highly respected group of astronomers and scientists in Rome, some who had studied and supported the theory of heliocentricity for years. But the scientific scholars of the time who supported heliocentricity did not propose the theory due to fear of ridicule from their colleagues. Many people wrongly believe Galileo proved heliocentricity, but he could not answer Aristotle s argument against it: If heliocentrism were true, then there would be observable parallax shifts in the stars positions as the earth moved in its orbit around the sun. However, given the technology of Galileo s time, no such shifts in their positions could be observed. The available evidence suggested that the stars were fixed in their positions relative to the earth, and so only the sun, moon, and planets were moving. Galileo could have safely proposed heliocentricity as a theory or a method to more simply account for the planets motions, as did some other scholars. His problem arose when he stopped proposing it as a scientific theory and began proclaiming it as truth, though there was no conclusive proof of it at the time. In 1614, Galileo moved from the scientific realm to the theological realm, arguing how this "new science" was contrary to certain Scripture passages. His opponents, about as many of them Protestants as Catholics, pointed to Bible passages that contradicted his theory, such as, "And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed..." (Josh. 10:13). A literalistic reading of these passages would have to be abandoned if the heliocentric theory were adopted. Theologians and scholars were not prepared to entertain the heliocentric theory based on a layman s interpretation. If Galileo had kept the discussion of his unproven theory within the accepted boundaries of astronomy, the issue would not have escalated to the point it did. In 1623, Galileo met with his longtime friend, the new pope Urban VIII, who gave Galileo permission to write a work on heliocentrism, but the new pope cautioned Galileo not to advocate the theory only to present arguments for and against it. This was just after the Protestant Reformation where one of the chief quarrels with Protestants was over individual interpretation of the Bible the pope did not want this theory to cause a further divide. In his writing, Galileo, perhaps inadvertently, made fun of the pope, a result that could only have disastrous consequences. Pope Urban felt mocked and could not believe how his friend could disgrace him publicly. Galileo also alienated his long-time supporters, the Jesuits, with attacks on one of their astronomers. The result was the infamous trial, which is still heralded as the final separation of science and religion. Galileo was placed under house arrest, though never tortured as many critics of Catholicism claim. In fact, he was treated surprisingly well. As historian Giorgio de Santillana, who is not overly fond of the Catholic Church, noted, "We must, if anything, admire the cautiousness and legal scruples of the Roman authorities." Galileo was offered every convenience possible to make his imprisonment in his home bearable. The church did eventually condemn Galileo s works after a court consisting of ten cardinals judged against him (three of whom refused to sign the verdict), which the pope approved. Some argue that this disproves the church doctrine of papal infallibility, but this is not true since the pope never spoke infallibly on the topic. As more recent science has shown, both Galileo and his opponents were partly right and partly wrong. Galileo was right in asserting the mobility of the earth and wrong in asserting the immobility of the sun. His opponents were right in asserting the mobility of the sun and wrong in asserting the immobility of the earth.

3 RELIGIOUS ED & YOUTH MINISTRY Our Mission is to nurture children and their families through sharing Christ s Love while instilling academic excellence. From Mrs. Pat s Desk This is an exciting year for 2 nd grade students. Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Reconciliation retreat and their First Confession. My wish for them was that by making their First Confession, they will continue to discover the wonder and peace of God s forgiveness throughout their lives. In just a few weeks, they will be receiving their First Communion. This is the 5 th year that the Catholic United Financial Raffle has taken place. A total of 85 schools from MN, ND, & SD participated. More than 18,000 students were out and about selling tickets. This is the first time that the raffle has broken the $1 million mark. The three top selling schools that sold the most tickets per student were awarded an additional $3,500 grant. We were lucky to receive 2 nd place with an average of 50 tickets sold per student. Maggie Dirkes was our high ticket seller with 269 tickets. Congratulations also goes out to Helen Zajac, Scott Oeltjen and Brently Boogaard for selling between tickets each. These students will also be receiving a Target Gift Card for their efforts. I would like to say a sincere thank you to all who supported both the school and the church in this endeavor. I was truly amazed by all the support we received. You can go to the Catholic United Financial website to see a list of all the winners. Grades 3 & 4 :: Here s What s Happening As the season changes and we begin the Lenten Season, the 3 rd and 4 th graders are learning many new concepts. Each week of Lent a new symbol is put into an Easter egg. On Ash Wednesday dirt was put into the first egg to remind us of God s creation. This week, coins were put into the 2 nd egg to remind us of Judas betrayal. During Holy Week, the students will be able to use all the objects to tell the Easter Story. In Math, we are covering topics of fractions, decimals, multiplication, division, 3-D shapes, and angles. The 3 rd graders are especially excited to be learning how to multiply. They are now able to use those skills to divide! In science, we are learning about different kinds of energy. We have learned about heat and sound energy. The students are very much looking forward to the topics of magnets and electricity. St. Nicholas Tonya Buelke, K-11 Faith Formation Director roytonya@gmail.com Find us on Facebook!
