4 A Gymanfa Ganu (pronounced cuh-man-va GA-nee) is a Welsh gathering for the purpose of singing. These singing festivals are an important part of Welsh history. They often include soloists, instrumentalists, actors, dancers, and comedians, but hymn singing is always the most important part. Children s choirs are also included in the festival. One of the most famous Gymanfa Ganu festival leaders was David Evans ( ). He was an organist, music professor, and hymn editor. Evans was a leader in his nation s music and was one of the outstanding musicians of his generation. He arranged and wrote the harmony for the tune MADRID, which we sing with Come, Christians, Join to Sing. It began as a Sunday school song for children. The original title, Come, Children, Join to Sing, was changed when the author, Christian Bateman ( ), realized people of all ages loved to sing his hymn.
