4 1st Reading: Acts 12:1-11 Feast of Sts Peter and Paul About that time Herod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword; and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. The very night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison; and behold, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, "Get up quickly." And the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, "Dress yourself and put on your sandals." And he did so. And he said to him, "Wrap your mantle around you and follow me." And he went out and followed him; he did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on through one street; and immediately the angel left him. And Peter came to himself, and said, "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting." When the poor one called out, the LORD heard, and from all his distress he saved him. The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. Taste and see how good the LORD is; blessed the man who takes refuge in him. The Epistle: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17, 18 For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the message fully, that all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. Response: Thanks be to God. The Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But

6 who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." 7 Announcements Today the Church throughout the world celebrates the feast day of Sts. Peter & Paul. As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of celebrating the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day. Together, the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome, through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there. Peter, who was named Simon, was a fisherman of Galilee and was introduced to the Lord Jesus by his brother Andrew, also a fisherman. Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Petrus in Latin), which means Rock, because he was to become the rock upon which Christ would build His Church, and the first Pope of the Catholic Church (Which is why the Vatican is called the "See of Peter" and why the coat of arms features the crossed keys. St. Paul was the Apostle of the Gentiles. His letters are included in the writings of the New Testament, and through them we learn much about his life and the faith of the early Church. Before receiving the name Paul, he was Saul, a Jewish Pharisee who zealously persecuted Christians in Jerusalem. Scripture records that Saul was present at the martyrdom of St. Stephen (where he held the cloaks of those throwing stones). Saul's conversion took place as he was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christian community there. As he was traveling along the road, he was suddenly surrounded by a great light from heaven. He was blinded and fell off his horse. He then heard a voice saying to him, Saul, Saul, why dost thou persecute me? He answered: Who are you, Lord? Christ said: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Our monthly Parish Potluck for July is scheduled for next Sunday, July 6th, following the 2 p.m. Solemn Mass -- Why not plan to round out our Independence Day celebration that weekend with a Family Celebration Luncheon! Please remember -- the more people who participate in the Potluck, the more fun (and food!) is enjoyed by all! The Catholic Church Women (CCW) Summer Salad Luncheon is Sunday, August 3rd. We will have a 50/50 raffle and also some fun prizes to raffle off. There will also be a Silent Auction and, as always, we will have door prizes. The ladies are thinking of a Hawaiian/Islander theme. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Additional Volunteers are needed! Please see Coordinator Judy Grimada with suggestions or if you can volunteer to help!

8 We are excited to announce that we had 17 visitors at Mass on June 22nd, (so our attendance was not especially low, even though many of our regular mass goers were either working or away) and 15 visitors two weeks ago - so interest in St. Timothy's is growing -- but the collection last Sunday was not at all where is needs to be. (We can't expect first time visitors to contribute more than a few dollars -- it's up to us to maintain a steady flow of funds for our church). Thus, the dreaded "Summer Slump" in collections began last week. Please make every effort to keep your contribution steady during the long green Sundays in summer. As always, St. Timothy's thanks you for your support! Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference (DCYC) Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference - July 11-13, The Annual Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference (DCYC) is a dynamic weekend held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel at DFW Airport.
