4 1st Reading: Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b, 64:2-7 Advent 1 Year B Thou, O Lord, art our Father, our Redeemer from of old is thy name. O Lord, why dost thou make us err from thy ways and harden our heart, so that we fear thee not? Return for the sake of thy servants, the tribes of thy heritage. We have become like those over whom thou hast never ruled, like those who are not called by thy name. as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil to make thy name known to thy adversaries, and that the nations might tremble at thy presence! hen thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains quaked at thy presence. From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides thee, who works for those who wait for him. Thou meetest him that joyfully works righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways. Behold, thou wast angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved? We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. There is no one that calls upon thy name, that bestirs himself to take hold of thee; for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast delivered us into the hand of our iniquities. Response: Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, The People sing the Responses: R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. O shepherd of Israel, hearken, from your throne upon the cherubim, shine forth.

5 The Epistle: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Rouse your power, and come to save us. R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. Once again, O LORD of hosts, look down from heaven, and see; take care of this vine, and protect what your right hand has planted the son of man whom you yourself made strong. R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. May your help be with the man of your right hand, with the son of man whom you yourself made strong. Then we will no more withdraw from you; give us new life, and we will call upon your name. R. Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to God always for you because of the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in every way you were enriched in him with all speech and all knowledge even as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ; who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. The Gospel: Mark 13:33-37 Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. Watch therefore for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or in the morning lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Watch. Response: Praise be to Thee O Christ

6 Announcements It's Stewardship Month at St. Timothy's! Our Stewardship Campaign began last Sunday with a heartfelt address by lifelong parishioner Christopher Christian. Thank you, Chris! The Stewardship theme this year is "If we CHOOSE to" -- because there is nothing to stop us from achieving any of our hopes and dreams at St. Timothy's if we choose to commit our Time, Talent and Treasure toward making these dreams a reality. Pledge Cards are available from the ushers at all Masses, or one may contact the Church Office. Over the next two weeks, other speakers will talk about what St, Timothy s means to them, and why Stewardship is important. The same Sunday as our famous Chili Cook-off, we will collect our pledge cards for the upcoming year. St. Timothy's needs all our support and we will continue to move forward in faith... if we choose to. Advent begins today. Advent is a season of Penitence and Perspective for Catholics before Christmas. At our Solemn Mass today, the service begins not with the usual Asperges, but with the Great Litany in procession and the Gloria in Excelsis is omitted. Our mass setting throughout Advent is the beloved Missa Maria Magdalena by Healy Willan. This simple setting helps focus us during Advent. May people choose to make their confessions during Advent. Confessions are held every Saturday at 3 p.m. (before the 4:30 Vigil Mass) or please call Father Stainbrook (817) to schedule yours. Our Catholic Church Women are also collecting money for Christmas food for the Union Gospel Mission, as well as white socks (men's and women's) and gift bags for the often forgotten senior ladies who live at Mission. Please see Judy Grimada or Marshelle Langston regarding donations. Our Wednesday Morning Bible Study class will begin our study of the Gospel of Saint Matthew next Wednesday (following the 9:30 Ordinariate Mass in the Chapel). Matthew has been called -- "The Gospel of the Church" Why not join the class and learn more? (As an added inducement: Refreshments are served at every class!)

7 The annual St. Timothy's Chili Cook-off will be held on Sunday, December 7th (now only one week away!!!). Thank you to all who registered last Sunday!! We are pleased to announce that we have many teams competing. Since the cook off falls one day after St. Nicholas day, the theme this year is 'St. Nicholas; the real Santa Claus! Those who want to enter to make chili, please contact event coordinator Judy Grimada. The entry fee is $7.50. (This helps to pay for trophies.) As usual, there will be a prize for the best theme/decoration chili/table as well as the first place trophy for the best chili. The Catholic Church Women are asked to provide desserts, so those willing to make a dessert, please let Judy know today. The Advent Tradition: Advent is the beginning of the liturgical year. It is a season of spiritual preparation for the coming of our Savior at Christmas. It is also an ideal time to establish in our homes liturgical customs. Most popular of the Advent customs is the Advent Wreath. It is derived from an ancient European custom. For many centuries, the week before Advent Sunday was a time for the gathering of greens and the making of the Advent Wreath, a project entered into by the entire family. How to Make a Wreath: The Advent Wreath is exactly what the word implies, a wreath of evergreens bound to a circle of wire, Styrofoam, or wood. Fastened to the wreath are four purple candles for the four Sundays in Advent. (A rose colored candle may be used for the Third Sunday.) The wreath may be hung or placed on a dinning table or buffet.
