2 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR OF FAITH SEPTEMBER 15, 2013 Today s Gospel Reflection 1st Reading: Ex 32:7-11, * Psalm 90:51:3-4, 12-13, 17, 19 * 2nd Reading: 1 Tm 1:12-17 * Lk 15:1-32 [1-10] LAVISH FORGIVENESS Moses appeals to God for compassion in today s first reading. The point of Moses pleas is not to provide a blueprint for pacifying an angry God, but to demonstrate that no matter our sin and its grievousness, God will always forgive. In his Letter to Timothy, Paul uses himself, the great sinner, as an example of just how great is God s forgiveness. Finally, today s Gospel parables create a mural of God s forgiving love. Like a diligent housekeeper, a good shepherd, a loving father, God goes out of the way to recover the lost and to forgive. By pointing out that the woman leaves her nine silver pieces, that the shepherd leaves his ninety-nine sheep waiting, and the father leaves his elder son upset, Jesus urges us to abandon a stingy view of life. MICHAEL CHURCH Dear Parishioners and friends, YEAR OF FAITH Pastor s Message By our prayers and sacrifices, we are encouraged to make Jesus present: Jesus the Teacher; Jesus the Priest; Jesus the Servant; Jesus the Shepherd. All of us are invited each year to be partners in continuing the mission of Jesus not only in our parish but in the Diocese of San Diego. The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) is one of the visible ways that we can respond to this invitation. We wish to enjoin those who have not made their pledge to the appeal to do so. PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO As of September 1, 2013, five hundred thirty eight (538) parishioners have already submitted their pledge. That s only 18.46% of the 2,925 registered parishioners. We are deeply touched by some who contributed out of their need which is manifested by enclosing pennies and nickels and dimes, and writing their names on the envelope, to show their unselfish and loving desire to help in any way they can. We received pledges from 25 cents to $1, Again, your participation, regardless of gift amount, makes a difference. You may find ACA envelopes in the pews and in the vestibule, and drop your envelope in the collection basket or bring it to the office. Let us all join the bandwagon and say, WE CARE! I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have blessed the Academy with their generous donation of time, talent, and treasure. Donors have spent countless hours getting our technology up to speed, praying for the needs of the Academy, sponsoring fun raisers to acquaint new families with returning families, holding fund raisers to help offset the expenses that tuition does not cover, donating office supplies and printers, and, contributing matching funds for the benefit of the Academy. We also had people put us in touch with an organization that was closing its doors so that we were able to secure some very nice items. To all of these people we say: THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts! Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school. Under the umbrella of Religious Education, many facets of the faith community are served by diocesan trained volunteers. These dedicated individuals consistently share their love of Christ and their zeal to spread the faith. Where is their presence and dedication felt? Religious Education (CCD) Youth & Young Adult Ministry Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RICA/RCIA) Pre-Baptism Seminar Children s Liturgy of the World (CLOW) Remember! Parents are truly the primary teachers of the faith of their children. They prepare the soil and plant the first seeds of faith. Madonna Council will be hosting one of the five Silver Roses honoring the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. This is the 53rd year of the program which began in Since March 1, 2013, five Silver Roses have been making their way across North America, from Canada to the United States to Mexico. It will conclude on Dec.12, 2013, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey, Mexico. Madonna Council will host the Silver Rose for one day, September 18, Wednesday at St. Michael Church with a prayer program before carrying it to the next selected Council.
