1 Promise The HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH WESTFIELD ^ NEW JERSEY January 2012 ^ Volume 36, Issue 1 New Year s Time keeps ticking HtgocWestfield@htgocnj.org holytrinitywestfield.org carefully then how you walk, not as unwise, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the Look days are evil. Ephesians 5: I have only just a minute, Only 60 seconds in it, Forced upon me can t refuse it, Didn t seek it, didn t choose it, But it s up to me to use it Give account if I abuse it: just a tiny little minute But eternity in it. Time is too precious a gift, too scarce a commodity to be squandered. If we waste it, we lose more opportunities than we know. Each moment is an opportunity for prayer, for kindness, for self-control, for personal growth. Make the best possible use of your time, says St. Paul Col. 4:5. If time is charged with opportunity (kairos time in Greek) and not merely a succession of empty moments (chronos time in Greek), it is shameful to waste it and sinful to kill it. The Bible places the accent upon time as kairos, as a Godgiven opportunity for us to use, to repent, to turn to Jesus, to love God and neighbor, to grow more and more unto His likeness. How we spend time is far more important than how we spend money. Money mistakes can be corrected, but when time is gone, it is gone forever. Is time running out on me? Well it s another year; another moment passing us by. Let s make this New Year 2012 the best we can make it. For the further we progress in time the closer we come to our demise, the closer we come to the grave. But with Christ, the passing of time signals the approach of the Saviour, the close of this age and the beginning of God s time, which last unto eternity. Make your pledges, make your New Year s resolutions and put Christ in the center of your life. Wishing you a blessed and prosperous New Year. Peace be to you. ^ ORTHODOX MISSION TO SIERRA LEONE Many thanks are extended to those who made a donation to the Orthodox Mission to Sierra Leone. Fr. Themis was moved by our outpouring of love. Because of your generosity and kindness of heart, Holy Trinity will send $8,300. With generous giving, the true spirit of Christian giving is made manifest within your hearts. Fr. Themis celebrated the liturgy with Fr. Peter on Sunday, November 27. He spoke of his mission in Sierra Leone. Fr. Peter and Dn. Gregory with Fr. Themis. Wait for the promise of the Father 1

3 Parish Council Update The Parish Council is comprised of the Parish Priest and the elected members of the Parish in good standing. Twenty-two dedicated men and women serve Holy Trinity as volunteers and make it possible for the Church to function effectively on a parish level. They are our Parish Council and we offer them our heartfelt thanks for assuming the great responsibilities before God, the Orthodox Church, our Holy Metropolis and, you, our faithful parishioners. Parish Council members serve as role models for parishioners and they take this ministry very seriously. They lead by example by attending Church services and parish events, and regularly participate in the sacramental life of the Church. By doing so, they have a true effect on the overall life of the Church. As your pastor, I would like to personally thank them for their dedication and, on behalf of our entire parish, express my gratitude to all of them. As we begin 2012, Ted Demetriou is thanked for his fine leadership this past year as the Parish Council President. Holy Trinity continues to be an outstanding Christ-centered parish. 6 Holy Trinity Choir The Choir Presents a Different Liturgy KATHRYN ATHANASOULAS, CHOIR DIRECTOR To celebrate Church Music Sunday on October 10, 2010 the choir offered the premiere of a Liturgy written by Dr. Spyridon Spathis ( ). Those who were present that Sunday enjoyed this presentation. On December 19 the choir once again offered this lovely Liturgy. Choir members who attended our annual conference in Richmond, VA 2008 were introduced to this Liturgy. Once again the choir presented it on November 20, The choir hopes that you enjoyed and were inspired by this lovely historical Greek arrangement. This will not replace our traditional Liturgy but is offered as a musical/spiritual gift. Here is a short history of when it was written. Dr. Spyridon Spathis was a Professor at the University of Athens and a well-known musicologist when he was chosen by King George I of Greece to direct the music he had harmonized at the inauguration of the new Greek Orthodox Church in Paris. It took place in December 1895 in the presence of the King. After the opening of the church, Dr. Spathis decided to settle in Paris and devoted the remainder of his life to directing the choir of the church and to harmonizing a total of 80 Byzantine hymns. In 1941 his widow, Fanny Spathis also an accomplished musician, succeeded him as Director and made the Byzantine Choir of the Greek Orthodox Church of Paris well known to musicologists. After the death of Fanny in 1962, the direction of the Choir passed to her daughter. Over the years many visitors from other countries have been impressed by the beauty of these magnificent hymns harmonized by Dr. Spathis, sung exclusively in the Greek Orthodox Church of Paris. They have asked for copies for use in their own churches. Unfortunately their requests could not be granted as the music existed only in manuscript form. Around 1963 these hymns were published thus making them available throughout the world fulfilling an obligation to Dr. Spathis and to the many admirers of this music. ^ The Holy Trinity Greek School PTO Cordially invites you to our 6 th Annual Family Greek Night Saturday, February 4, :00-10:00 PM Pantagis Renaissance. 8 Stewardship Woman who offered precious ointment There s a principle found throughout the Scriptures concerning giving, it says: When you give, you gain what you cannot buy with your money. In Mark 14:3-9, a woman gave Jesus a gift of precious ointment. There were some present who called her gift wasteful. They said the ointment should have been sold and the money given to the poor. But Jesus rebuked their hypocrisy, for gifts given from the heart are always accepted by the Lord. This woman gave Jesus something precious, her best gift, the best she could do. When you give to the church, is your gift merely a token gift or is it, a generous gift, coming from your heart filled with love? Is it the best you can do? Notice what else Jesus said about this woman s gift: I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her. She couldn t buy that kind of testimony or notoriety for any amount of money; but giving obtained it for her. Your giving does not stop when you put a check in your Stewardship envelope. Your giving continues to live on as a testimony to God s presence. Your money is transformed into the service of Orthodoxy on the parish, Archdiocesan, Metropolis and Patriarchal levels. You can t put a price on that. You cannot buy an eternal soul, but through giving you can make eternity possible for your soul, your family s and for others. You cannot buy the blessings of God, but through giving you can release God s blessing through the Church. With your 2012 Stewardship offering, are you giving in the spirit of the woman who anointed Jesus with the costly ointment? Have you increased your Stewardship Commitment for 2012? If you haven t maybe you should reconsider? Does your giving reflect generosity of spirit, which in turn provides blessings that money cannot buy? Is your Stewardship Commitment a loving gift, a generous gift, a gift coming from your heart? Is it the best you can do? Let s all join hearts and hands today in the Body of Christ and give our best to the work of the Lord for May the Lord say about you: he has given his best, she has given her best. ^ Special New Year s Gifts Throughout Christmas and the New Year, many of our parishioners desire to express their love for Christ by offering a gift to His Church. For this reason, a list is provided for your convenience. Please call the church office for more information. Altar Fund [any amount]; Incense $50; Charcoal $30; Daily Bible Guides $250; Holy Water Bottles $300; Thank you for your donation and support. ^ 8 Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church ^ Westfield, New Jersey

9 Bookstore Happy New Year Wishes from the Book Store! SANDY MOURATOGLOU OLTMANN & ANDREA BLASI The Book Store wishes you every happiness in 2012 and in all the years to come! To enhance that happiness you might consider answering these questions: WHAT? : Book Store Stewardship gives you the opportunity to browse our many offerings: Icons, Crosses, and religious CDs to inspire prayers; Bibles for young and old; and books on various aspects of the Greek Orthodox religion, Greek culture and cooking. Book Store Stewardship also gives you the opportunity to meet new friends, and most rewarding of all, to help spread the Word of God. WHY? : To put our lamps on a lamp stand to give light to all who are in the house (Matthew 5:15). As the moon does not generate its own light, but gives only a reflection of the sun s light, the light of each human being is only a reflection of God s light. How better could our lamps shine than to help our fellow adult parishioners with their lifelong journey in search of their pearl of great price (Matthew 13:45-46)? Please see the notes in the Orthodox Study Bible, Old and New Testament version: we still have many copies of this Bible available for the surprisingly low price of $32! Note also that pearl of great price is perhaps better translated as pearl of great value the Greek adjective polytimos is compounded of polys much, and the noun time, which means value (Ralph Earle, Word Meanings in the New Testament: A quick reference to help you discover the richness of meaning found in the original language of the Bible, page 13. Earle references NASB The New American Standard Bible and NIV The Holy Bible, New International Version.) HOW? : There is an old saying: It is better to give, than to receive. Learn how to give so that you can receive from God. There is something very special about any Christian Stewardship, as we see in Luke 6:38: Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. (Again, there is a beautiful note about this in the Orthodox Study Bible.) Obviously the idea here is abundant giving, in general. What could be more rewarding, however, than helping fellow adult parishioners (and in the process, yourself ) find each one s own pearl of great value? We all have umpteen responsibilities at home, at work, and even several responsibilities at Church. Look around at any Church function; you will always see the same faces among those who are working. You can enhance your Stewardship in two ways: you will personally receive more than you give (with any Stewardship). If you become a Book Store Steward, however, you will also donate to the expenses of our Church because all Book Store profits are donated to the Church. In addition, one cannot say that one Church Stewardship is any better than another (1 Corinthians 12:4-21): Furthermore, although all Church Stewardships listed at the top of page 19 of our Church directory allow individuals to give according to their own unique talents and abilities, only Book Store Stewardship allows one to give according to one s own schedule: even if you help us once every so often, it is help we did not have before! There is no obligation, you will meet new people and find it extremely rewarding. ^ The Promise ^ January 2012 ^ Volume 36, Issue 1 9
