1 St. George Orthodox Church V. Rev. Father Joseph M. Abud, Pastor 5191 Lennon Road Flint, MI (810) Protodeacon Michael Bassett Web Site: saintgeorgeflint.org November 19, 2017 NOVEMBER IS I.O.C.C. (INTERNATIONAL ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN CHARITIES) MONTH 24 TH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST PROPHET OBADIAH Tone 7 2 nd Matins Gospel {Mark 16:1-8} Altar Servers: EVERYONE {Shane Gantos, captain} Confessions Matins p.44 Divine Liturgy p.91 Memorial Service 8:30-9:30am 8:50am 10:00am Trisagion p.183 Welcome to St. George! Thank you for attending today s Divine Liturgy. Please register your visit by completing the guest book located in the narthex. We would appreciate getting to meet you, so feel free to join us during Coffee Fellowship in our Banquet Center! Every Sunday we remember the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The word Liturgy means work of the people that means everyone participates through singing, praying, hearing the teaching, and opening our hearts to allow God s grace to enter. We believe Holy Communion to be a sign that in Christ we have all things in common, share an identical faith, and are united fully to the Orthodox Church. Anyone interested in learning more about our faith are encouraged to speak with one of our clergy. Holy Communion can be given to Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting (no food or drink from midnight the night before), the Sacrament of Confession (7 years and older) within the last 2 months, being at peace with others, and attending the Divine Liturgy regularly. Please know everyone is invited to venerate the Holy Cross and receive Holy Bread at the end of Liturgy. Third Antiphon (during the Little Entrance) Troparion of the Resurrection Tone 7 Thou didst shatter death by Thy Cross. Thou didst open paradise to the thief. Thou didst turn the sadness of the ointment-bearing women into joy; and didst bid Thine apostles proclaim a warning, that Thou hast risen O Christ, granting to the world the great mercy. Hymns after the Entrance with the Gospel Troparion of the Resurrection Tone 7 (same as above) Troparion for St. George Tone 4 As deliverer of captives and defender of the poor, healer of the infirm, champion of kings: Victorious Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ our God, for our souls salvation. بما ا نك للما سورين محرر ومعتق وللفقراء والمساكين عاضد وناصر وللمرضى طبيب وشاف وعن المو منين مكافح ومحارب ا يها العظيم في الشهداء جاورجيوس اللابس الظفر تشفع ا لى المسيح الا له في خلاص نفوسنا.

2 Kontakion of Mary s Entrance into the Temple Tone 4 The all-pure temple of the Savior, the most precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the treasure-house of the glory of God, today enters the Temple of the Lord, bringing with her the grace which is in the divine Spirit: whom also the angels of God do celebrate in song; for she is the heavenly tabernacle. 3 Reception of Holy Communion Please remember only ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS who have PREPARED themselves may partake of Holy Communion. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. Combined Pan-Orthodox Evening Divine Liturgy for the Entrance of the Virgin Mary into the Temple at St. Nicholas (2143 South Center Road, ½ mile south of Lippincott Burton ) 6pm Pan-Orthodox Book Club 6-8pm NO SOYO Wednesday Akathist of Thanksgiving 6pm THANK GOD IN ALL THINGS! No Great Vespers NOVEMBER 19 TH ~ PROPHET OBADIAH The Divine Scriptures do not tell us with certainty when the Prophet Obadiah lived nor where his homeland was. Thus, some say he is that Obadiah who was Ahab's steward, who, because of Jezebel's wrath, hid one hundred prophets in a cave and fed them with bread and water (III Kings 18:4), and he later became a disciple of Elias (Elijah) the Prophet about 903 B.C. Others surmise from the words of the same prophetical book he is somewhat later than the Prophet Joel (celebrated on Oct. 19). He is also called Obdiu or Abdiu; his name means "servant of God." His book of prophecy, which consists of only one chapter, is fourth of twelve Old Testament Minor Prophets NOVEMBER 21 ST ~ PRESENTATION OF THE VIRGIN MARY INTO THE TEMPLE According to the tradition of the Church, the Theotokos was brought to the Temple at three years of age. Here, she was consecrated to God and spent her days until she was fourteen or fifteen years old. Then, as a mature virgin maiden, by the common counsel of the priests (since her parents had reposed some three years before), she was betrothed to Joseph REGULAR OFFICE HOURS Our secretary, Kelly Dotson, works on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays (10am-4pm), Tuesdays and Wednesdays (1pm-4pm). Kelly can be reached at the church office or kellysecstgeorge@gmail.com. If you know of a parishioner who has given birth, fallen ill, or admitted to the hospital, please call the church office or let Father Joe know. If you would like to host Coffee Fellowship in memory of a loved one, the occasion of a birthday, a wedding anniversary, or in thanksgiving to God, sign up on the poster in the Lounge or speak with Manal Abuaita.

5 Office of the Secretariat Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. To the Most Reverend Clergy, Venerable Monastics, and Devout Faithful of the Holy Orthodox Churches in the Americas: Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the Orthodox faithful in the United States come together to give thanks to God for all his blessings, and for the privilege of serving the least of our brethren. The Assembly of Bishops has called this Sunday A Day of Sharing, for the message IOCC brings is one of sharing God s good gifts to us, reiterating Christ s call to serve Him by loving and serving one another. As the official humanitarian agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, International Orthodox Christian Charities, or IOCC, is our vehicle to extend to others the great mercy that Christ has shown us. Since its creation in 1992, IOCC has served people around the world struggling in the face of war, famine, natural disaster, and economic hardship so that they may have the means to live with dignity, respect, and hope. In 2017, IOCC s 25th anniversary year, IOCC has extended that hope to many around the world. IOCC has helped Syrian refugees throughout Greece, Jordan, Lebanon, Romania, and Serbia, as well as those Syrians displaced in their own country, by providing food, water, shelter, and medicine. IOCC has offered economic opportunity to farmers in northern Greece grappling with the ongoing financial crisis, and trained healthcare workers in Ethiopia so that they can customize wheelchairs for people with disabilities. IOCC has helped to reconstruct storm-damaged schools in Haiti; rebuilt homes destroyed by natural disasters here in the United States; and offered emotional and spiritual care after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. With assistance offered in the spirit of Christ s love, farmers in Kosovo have increased their harvests, entrepreneurs in Bosnia- Herzegovina have grown their businesses, and flood survivors in Serbia have started anew. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them (1 Cor. 12:4 6). Each one of us brings unique gifts to our service of Christ; so too the ministry of IOCC is varied in its manifestations yet unified in purpose. That unity characterizes our ability as one Church to serve those in need, near and far, reaching around the world in Christ s love. As we thank God for His goodness to us, let us not forget His children near and far facing difficulty, and let us recommit to serving those in need, to being Christ s hands on Earth. During this blessed holiday season, may the LORD shine His mercy upon you and your family, and bring peace into your homes and your hearts. With paternal blessing and love in Christ, +Metropolitan NICOLAE of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolia of the Americas Liaison for IOCC from the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America Philippians 2: NORTH WOODLAWN STREET WICHITA, KANSAS PHONE: FAX: SECRETARIAT@ASSEMBLYOFBISHOPS.ORG

6 IOCC SUNDAY A Day of Sharing November 19, 2017 Each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, Orthodox faithful across the US thank God for the privilege of serving the least of our brethren through IOCC. The Assembly of Bishops has named it A Day of Sharing. On this day, we consider IOCC s global work and the ways you sustain it: by providing food, water, shelter and medicine to refugees, offering economic opportunity to farmers in northern Greece, training healthcare workers in Ethiopia, and so much more. Please consider giving a gift of compassion today. IOCC, the official humanitarian agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, has provided over $625 million in humanitarian relief and development programs to people in need in more than 60 countries. iocc.org /DayofSharing
