We would appreciate getting to meet you, so feel free to join us during Coffee Fellowship in our Banquet Center! Every Sunday we remember the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The word Liturgy means work of the people that means everyone participates through singing, praying, hearing the teaching, and opening our hearts to allow God s grace to enter. We believe Holy Communion to be a sign that in Christ we have all things in common, share an identical faith, and are united fully to the Orthodox Church. Anyone interested in learning more about our faith are encouraged to speak with one of our clergy. Holy Communion can be given to Orthodox Christians who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting (no food or drink from midnight the night before), the Sacrament of Confession (7 years and older) within the last 2 months, being at peace with others, and attending the Divine Liturgy regularly. Please know everyone is invited to venerate the Holy Cross and receive Holy Bread at the end of Liturgy. Reception of Holy Communion Please remember only ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS who have PREPARED themselves may partake of Holy Communion. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord s body. (1 Corinthians 11:28-29) If you are physically able, please remain standing during Holy Communion. ANNOUNCEMENTS COFFEE FELLOWSHIP is hosted by Khaled and Sally Abuaita. St. George provides coffee, cups, cream, and sugar at a charge to the host of $25. For more information, please see Jamal Abuaita. CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS Parents Things are going well. Please help your child prepare the night before, so that they can be on time for Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning. Information will be coming home about our upcoming "Thanksgiving Dinner". Please mark down November 11 th. The children will be preparing the meal for everyone; we are planning to take meals to our shutins as well. The children are to be dropped off at the church at 2pm sharp. Parents are needed to help with set-up and we need a clean-up committee, please see our parent coordinators, Evette Rishmawi or Anaam Abueita to sign up. Each child will be asked to bring one can of food for the food drive that will be sent to a local shelter. You can always call or with any questions and/or sign up to help with this or any function Church School has. Thank you, Janet Abueita ( / cooeita@aol.com) YOUTH MONTH All of the members of our Teen SOYO are encouraged to participate in the Sacraments of Repentance and Communion during this month. If you do not do so on a regular basis, confessions are heard as usual on Saturdays after Great Vespers, Sunday mornings between 8:30-9:30am, or by appointment during the week. PAN ORTHODOX BOOK CLUB We meet on Tuesdays 6-8pm at St. George. We are continuing in our current book The Sayings of the Desert Fathers throughout October. All are invited to join! 4 or WEEKLY OFFERINGS Our average weekly offerings need to be $4,710 to meet our 2017 Budget. On October 1 st, our offerings were $2,504, so we were short $2,206! ARAB AMERICAN HERITAGE COUNCIL (AAHC) ENSURE THE LEGACY BANQUET The annual banquet is on Tuesday, October 17 th from 5:30pm-8pm at the Northbank Center Grand Ballroom 432 N Saginaw St #507, Flint, MI Our life-long parishioner, Vera Farah, will be honored as Arab-American of the Year. In addition, college scholarships will be awarded. The applications are in the Lounge and the deadline is October 10 th! Tickets are $75. Please contact Devin Jones or devin@aahcflint.org with questions and to reserve your tickets. Parish Council Vacancies If you would like to be nominated or would like to nominate qualified (see below) parishioners for the 3 expiring terms on the Parish Council, please submit names to a member of the Nominating Committee. The committee is composed of Dannie Jones, Fadi Rishmawi, Anwar Abueita, and Fr. Joe. The deadline to be a nominee is October 22 nd. All nominees must attend a Parish Council Nominee Seminar on Monday, October 23 rd from 7-8pm. If you will be attending, please let Fr. Joe know. If this day and time does not work for you, speak with Fr. Joe to reschedule another time before the deadline (October 23 rd ). Clergy Retreat and Fall Gathering hosted by St. George-Grand Rapids, MI Friday Euchre Tournament 6:30pm Saturday No Great Vespers OCTOBER 8 TH ~ PELAGIA THE PENITENT OF ANTIOCH This Saint was a prominent actress of the city of Antioch, and a pagan, who lived a life of unrestrained wasteful spending and led many to damnation. Instructed and baptized by a certain bishop named Nonnus (Saint Nonnus is commemorated Nov. 10 th ), she departed for the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, where she lived as a recluse, pretending to be a eunuch* called Pelagia. She lived in such holiness and repentance that within three or four years she was deemed worthy to repose in an odor of sanctity, in the middle of the fifth century. Her tomb on the Mount of Olives has been a place of pilgrimage ever since. *Eunuch comes from the Greek meaning bedroom guard. In history, a eunuch was a man whose job was to guard the bedroom door of a royal woman to protect her. These guards were castrated to make them less threatening to the women they guarded

Is 40:8 October 2, 2017 Dear Brother Hierarchs, Reverend Clergy, Esteemed members of the Archdiocese Board of Trustees, and Christ-loving Faithful, Blessing and greetings to you in the Name of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus! With profound sadness, yet hope in the Resurrection, I announce the passing into eternal life of my beloved brother, Bishop ANTOUN. Words cannot begin to describe our debt of gratitude to His Grace nor our sense of loss at his falling asleep. As our senior, and for many years our only, auxiliary bishop, he traveled the width and breadth of our God-protected Archdiocese. He was sincerely loved by all young and old and he will be greatly missed. All of us who were blessed to witness his retirement banquet this past July in Miami were greatly moved by the effort he made to be with his people one last time. Now we are comforted and assured that he will eternally pray for his people at the throne of God. All churches in the Archdiocese are directed to hold Trisagion Prayers of Mercy this Sunday in memory of Bishop ANTOUN and all are asked to pray for His Grace in their public and private prayers throughout the next forty days. We are diligently working on the arrangements for the funeral and burial and will post them once they are final. As I continue to attend the meetings of the Holy Synod this week at the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Saint Elias Shwayya, Lebanon, be assured of my paternal love and prayers as we mourn the passing of His Grace.
