God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [All bow, at the following text ] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 4

To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn, then, O most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. V/: Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. R/: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. 6 Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

7 Our Faith OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS The Second Vatican Council has called us to envision the Church as the people of God. As a community of believers we are responsible for our brothers and sisters, their salvation, their journey of faith, their physical well being. Many of the documents of Vatican II and volumes of work since the mid 1960s give us advice, guidelines, and encouragement to take care of one another: the poor, the elderly, the unborn, the broken, the infirm. Because Vatican II is part of our recent history indeed many of us were already born this may strike us as a new and revolutionary idea. But today s readings show us the agelessness of the issue of social justice. Eight hundred years before Christ was born, Amos warned the wealthy not to cheat the poor. In Paul s first letter to Timothy, he encourages all prayers to be for all people; and finally, the Gospel urges the wise use of money. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The Lord never forgets the sins of those who take advantage of the poor (Amos 8:4 7). Psalm Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor (Psalm 113). Second Reading Pray to the Lord, who wants everyone to be saved (1 Timothy 2:1 8). Gospel Be trustworthy in all things. Serve God, the only master, not mammon (Luke 16:1 13 [10 13]).The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. 9 FEAST DAY OF ST. THECLA On the back page we have photos from last Tuesday s celebration of St. Thecla s Feast Day. Much to celebrate! Our preschoolers attended Mass with the entire student body and are learning to pray. We received an image of St. Thecla, showing her prayerful courage in the face of martyrdom for teaching the Catholic Faith under the persecution of the Roman Empire. Her perseverance is an inspiration to all who choose to believe in Jesus. The art is the creation of Hamburg University students Tiffany Vassilatos and David Szmigielski (parishioner). Our heartfelt thanks to them for this gift. Students invited their grandparents and special persons for Mass, a brunch prepared by FSA, and a tour of their classrooms. The tradition on this feast day is for Fr. Gene to visit and bless each classroom. The photos are on the back page. Enroll your child today in St. Thecla School Contact Director of Student Development Kathy Collins studentdevelopment@saintthecla.org The St. Thecla Women s Council eagerly and joyfully begins the season. We invite all women to join us for our meet and greet Wine & Cheese gathering at 7:30pm in Scout Hall Tuesday Sept. 20th. Join us for a fun evening visiting with past and new members. STWC meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, September May. All of our activities are open to nonmembers, however, the nominal membership due of $10.00 helps offset the costs of some of these activities. Dues can be paid at the general meeting or sent through the collection, school or parish offices; Attn: DiAnn Plaza. See the text box below. We sponsor interesting and informative programs, outings, outreach projects and fundraising events for our parish and school family. New members will help our continued support of St. Thecla for years to come. Please join us Sept. 20th. On an envelope print St. Thecla Women s Council $10.00 Membership Enclose the $10 annual dues along with your name, address, zip code, telephone # and Welcome new members Love and Protection of the Unborn The whole mission of the Catholic Church in the world the theme and purpose and vocation of every institution and every Catholic individual is love. Why does the Church set up hospitals and adoption agencies and soup kitchens? Why have whole orders of nuns been founded to care for the elderly or the sick? Why did St. Damien offer to go to spend his last years serving in a leper colony in Hawaii? Why did Mother Teresa establish homes for men dying of AIDs? It s not for money. It s not for recognition. It s not a plan to increase our numbers and our social influence. It s not even because the Church is committed to taking care of her own. It matters not at all to any of these institutions or individuals whether the people they re serving are Catholic. They don t have to be Catholic. They can even be anti Catholic. We don t do it for ourselves; we do it for love. We do it because we understand that each and every person is made in the image and likeness of God. Each, no matter how small or weak or wounded or messed up, is completely unique and infinitely precious. We understand that all human life including every child in the womb is a gift to be received, cherished, and served, not abused, not manipulated, not degraded, not destroyed.
