1 BOOKS The most simple Gregorian chants that the faithful are invited to learn to sing according to the intention of Vatican Council II s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy THE CHANTS OF TRADITION
2
3 THE CHANTS OF TRADITION The most simple Gregorian chants Introduction to the booklet Iubilate Deo requested by Paul VI and published in 1974 by the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, in the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, having urged that appropriate space be given to national languages in liturgical celebrations, adds this recommendation: Nevertheless steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them 1. Guided by this thought and this intention, the Supreme Pontiff Paul VI several times in recent years 2 has expressed the wish that Gregorian chant should accompany the Eucharistic celebrations of the People of God with its pleasing harmony, giving them strength and vigor, and that the voices of the faithful should intone both Gregorian chants and those in the national language. This booklet responds to the desires of the Supreme Pontiff. In it are gathered some of the simpler melodies, that the faithful should sing together, especially on the occasion of the Holy Year.
4 In this way, Gregorian chant will remain the bond that will make of many people a single nation, gathered in the name of Christ with one heart, one thought, one voice. In fact, the impulse to unity, expressed by the consonance of the voices in the variety of languages, rhythms and harmonies, makes admirably clear the varied harmony of one only Church: It s really a great bond of unity Ambrose said the song of the whole multitude of people in a single chorus! There are several strings to the harp, but only one symphony. The fingers of the artist often err, in a few strings; but the Spirit artist in the people can not err 3. May God grant that common prayer achieve a happy outcome and that the heart of the Church that prays may resonate with joy and more on high, throughout the earth, with these gentle and devout harmonies. 14 April 1974 Easter Sunday, Resurrection of the Lord 1 Vatican Council II, Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum Concilium, n August 1973, in the General Audience; 12 October 1973, to the International Association of Sacred Music (CIMS), cf. also the Letter of Cardinal Villot, Secretary of State at the conference of the Italian Association of Santa Cecilia, Genoa September 1973, L Osservatore Romano, 27 September St Ambrose, Explanationes Psalmorum, in ps. 1, 9: Patrologia Latina 14, 925.
