1 ADVENT EVENING PRAYER

2 When composing liturgical music, I attempt to create a tapestry into which are woven stories, signs and symbols that draw the eye toward the inner fabric where lies discovery of artistry and meaning. In the musical experience, melodies, harmonies, and textures are the elements that draw the listener toward an experience of spiritual and emotional meaning. Advent Vespers for The Year of Faith, which I wrote for The Basilica of Saint Mary, has these same elements organized for an experience of truth in the liturgy. The formation of the music began with some ideas I associate with faith confidence, groundedness, and advent anticipation, joy. So these ideas are the basis for the general mood and design of the music. For example, the key selection (D major, C major, and B-flat major) for each of the three texts creates a melodic gesture of stability and confidence. Also, the recurrence of the tone D establishes a presence of joy throughout the vespers. D major is a brilliant key used to express joy in many hymns, such as I Know that My Redeemer Lives, Oh Morning Star, How Fair and Bright and Joy to the World. The first setting for vespers is for Psalm 72. Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever. The stability of God s justice is present in the organ s sustained D pedal during the first phrase. The melody reaches a climax on the word fullness while the harmony (GM7+9) feels expansive. The successive descending melody and harmonic progression settle to a resting place, as it were, creating peace. The second setting is for Psalm 85. Lord, let us see your kindness and grant us your salvation. The descending melody of the refrain s first phrase offers a mood of comfort and graciousness: kindness. Continuing from there, the joy of salvation emerges in melody and harmonic progression toward D major. Revelation 21:1-5a is the text for the canticle in this vespers. I saw the holy city coming down out of heaven from God. When God comes down we are lifted up. The refrain has complimentary descending and ascending melodic contour and concludes with an uplifting gesture. The verses are sung by a single voice, as it were John describing the vision. However, the great voice from the throne is set in contrast in ethereal four-part choral harmony. It is my hope that with these insights to Advent Vespers for the Year of Faith, the experience of participants in vespers may be more inspired and enriched, and that, even not knowing, they may realize the truth in the Word. ~ Donald Krubsack ADVENT SETTING 2
