Saint Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church Founded 1879 The Twelfth Sunday of the Year 25 June 2017
Prelude Organ: Praise to You, O Jesu Christ Johann Buttstedt ( ) Introit: Dominus fortitudo plebis suae Graduale Romanum Dominus fortitudo plebis suae, et protector salutarium Christi sui est: salvum fac populum tuum, Domine, et benedic hereditati tuae, et rege eos usque in saeculum. Ps. Ad te Domine clamabo, Deus meus ne sileas a me: nequando taceas a me, et assimilabor descendentibus in lacum. The Lord is the strength of his people, and the guardian of salvation for his Anointed. Save your people, O Lord, and bless your inheritance; be their guide forever. Ps. To you, O Lord, will I cry; O my God, be not silent to me; if you remain silent, I will become like those who go down into the grave. (Psalm 27: 8, 9, & 1) Entrance Procession -2-
-3-
Collect Liturgy of the Word First Reading Jeremiah 20: Jeremiah said: "I hear the whisperings of many: 'Terror on every side! Denounce! let us denounce him!' All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine. 'Perhaps he will be trapped; then we can prevail, and take our vengeance on him.' But the LORD is with me, like a mighty champion: my persecutors will stumble, they will not triumph. In their failure they will be put to utter shame, to lasting, unforgettable confusion. O LORD of hosts, you who test the just, who probe mind and heart, -4-
let me witness the vengeance you take on them, for to you I have entrusted my cause. Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, for he has rescued the life of the poor from the power of the wicked!" Lector: The Word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 69: 8-10, 14, 17, For your sake I bear insult, and shame covers my face. I have become an outcast to my brothers, a stranger to my children, Because zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who blaspheme you fall upon me. R. Lord, in your great love, answer me. I pray to you, O LORD, for the time of your favor, O God! In your great kindness answer me with your constant help. Answer me, O LORD, for bounteous is your kindness; in your great mercy turn toward me. R. Lord, in your great love, answer me. "See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts revive! For the LORD hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not. Let the heavens and the earth praise him, the seas and whatever moves in them!'' R. Lord, in your great love, answer me. Second Reading Romans 5: Brothers and sisters: Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all men, inasmuch as all sinned for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law. But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come. But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one man Jesus Christ overflow for the many. Lector: The word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. -5-
Alleluia The Spirit of truth will testify to me, says the Lord; and you also will testify. (John 15: 26b-27a) Holy Gospel Matthew 10: Homily Priest: The Lord be with you. Response: And with your spirit. Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Response: Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus said to the Twelve: "Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Everyone who acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my heavenly Father. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my heavenly Father." Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Profession of Faith The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. -6-
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [bow] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayer of the Faithful Offertory Lector: Let us pray to the Lord. Response: Lord, hear our prayer. Liturgy of the Eucharist -7-
Sanctus Offertorium: Perfice gressus meos Graduale Romanum Perfice gressus meos in semitis tuis, ut non moveantur vestigia mea: inclina aurem tuam, et exaudi verba mea: mirifica misericordias tuas, qui salvos facis sperantes in te, Domine. Render secure my footsteps in your paths so that my feet do not slip; incline your ear and hear my words; display your wonderful mercies, O Lord, Savior of those who place their hope in you. (Psalm 16: 5, 6, 7) Motet: Perfice gressus meos Orlandus Lassus ( ) (See Offertorium above for text & translation.) Missa XVIII Mysterium Fidei -8-
Amen Agnus Dei Communion Procession Communio: Quod dico vobis with Psalm 33/34 Graduale Romanum Quod dico vobis in tenebris, dicite in lumine, dicit Dominus: et quod in aure auditis, praedicate super tecta. That which I tell you in the dark, utter in the light, says the Lord; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the rooftops. (Matthew 10: 27) Benedicam Dominum in omni tempore, semper laus eius in ore meo. I will bless the Lord at all times, always shall his praise be in my mouth. In Domino gloriabitur anima mea, audiant mansueti et laetentur. In the Lord shall my soul be glorified; let the meek hear and be glad. Magnificate Dominum mecum, et exaltemus nomen eius in idipsum. Magnify the Lord with me; and let us extol his name together. -9-
Exquisivi Dominum, et exaudivit me et ex omnibus terroribus meis erupit me. I sought the Lord, and he listened to me and from all my terrors he delivered me. Respicite ad eum, et illuminamini, et facies vestrae non confundentur. Turn to him, and be enlightened, and your faces shall not be confounded. Iste pauper clamavit, et Dominus exaudivit eum et de omnibus tribulationibus eius salvavit eum. This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him and from all his troubles he saved him. Vallabit angelus Domini in circuitu timentes eum, et eripiet eos. The angel of the Lord shall encamp around those who fear him, and shall deliver them. Gustate et videte quoniam suavis est Dominus: beatus vir, qui sperant in eo. Taste and see how gracious the Lord is: blessed the man, who trusts in him. Juxta est Dominus iis, qui contrito sunt corde, et confractos spiritus salvabit. The Lord is near to them, who are contrite of heart, and the humble of heart he shall save. Redimet Dominus animas servorum suorum: et non ponientur omnes, qui sperant in eo. The Lord redeems the souls of his servants; and none of them shall be condemned who trust in him. (Psalm 33/34: 2-9, 19, 23) Choir: Adoro te devote 1. Adoro te devote, latens Deitas, quae sub his figuris vere latitas: tibi se cor meum totum subjicit, quia te contemplans totum deficit. I devoutly adore you, O hidden Deity, truly hidden beneath these appearances. My whole heart submits to you, and contemplating you, it surrenders itself completely. 2. Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur, sed auditu solo tuto creditur; credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius: nil hoc verbo Veritatis verius. Sight, touch, taste fail in their judgment of you, but hearing suffices firmly to believe. I believe all the Son of God has said; there is nothing truer than this word of truth. 3. In cruce latebat sola Deitas, at hic latet simul et humanitas: ambo tamen credens atque confitens, peto quod petivit latro poenitens. On the cross only the divinity was hidden, but here the humanity is also hidden. yet believing and confessing both, I ask for what the repentant thief asked. 4. Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor: Deum tamen meum te confiteor: fac me tibi semper magis credere, in te spem habere, te diligere. I do not see the wounds as Thomas did, but I confess that you are my God. Make me always believe more in you, hope in you, and love you. 5. O memoriale mortis Domini! Panis vivus vitam praestans homini! Praesta meae menti de te vivere et te illi semper dulce sapere. O memorial of our Lord's death! Living bread that gives life to man, Grant my soul to live in you, and always to savor your sweetness. -10-
6. Pie Pellicane, Jesu Domine, me immundum munda tuo sanguine, cujus una stilla salvum facere totum mundum quit ab omni scelere. Kind Pelican, Lord Jesus, wash my filthiness and clean me with your blood, one drop of which can free the entire world of all its sins. 7. Jesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio, oro, fiat illud quod tam sitio: ut te revelata cernens facie, visu sim beatus tuae gloriae. Amen. Jesus, whom now I see hidden, I ask you to fulfill what I so desire: that with the sight of your face revealed I may be blessed to see your glory. Amen. (14 th Century Eucharistic Hymn, attributed to Saint Thomas Aquinas) Final Blessing & Dismissal Priest: The mass is ended, go in peace. Response: Thanks be to God. The Saint Michael Prayer Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits, who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Priest: Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, All: Have mercy on us.
