1 WASHINGTON The USCCB in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Relief Services, the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) and Aid to the Church in Need announce the observance this Sunday, November 26, as A Day of Prayer for Persecuted Christians. The Day of Prayer also initiates "Solidarity in Suffering," a Week of Awareness and Education that runs from November 26-December 3. The Day of Prayer on the Solemnity of Christ the King, is a fitting time to reflect on religious freedom and Christians around the world who are being persecuted in unheard of numbers. "On the solemnity of Christ the King, I ask that the entire church in the United States come together in a special way for a day of prayer for persecuted Christians to express our solidarity with those who are suffering," says Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, during his annual address to bishops. In a statement to bishops, the cardinal added, "To focus attention on the plight of Christians and other minorities is not to ignore the suffering of others. Rather by focusing on the most vulnerable members of society, we strengthen the entire fabric of society to protect the rights of all."

9 Liturgical Notes for Advent From Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar: 39. Advent has a twofold character, for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ's Second Coming at the end of time. For these two reasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight. 40. Advent begins with First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) of the Sunday that falls on or closest to November 30 and it ends before First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) of Christmas. 41. The Sundays of this time of year are named the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Sundays of Advent. 42. The weekdays from December 17 up to and including December 24 are ordered in a more direct way to preparing for the Nativity of the Lord. The liturgical color for Advent is purple, just like Lent as both are seasons that prepare us for great feast days. Also Advent (like Lent) includes an element of penance in the sense of preparing, quieting and disciplining our hearts for the full joy of Christmas. This penitential dimension is expressed through the color purple, but also through the restrained manner of decorating the church and altar: "During Advent the floral decoration of the altar should be marked by a moderation suited to the character of this time of year, without expressing in anticipation the full joy of the Nativity of the Lord [also] the use of the organ and other musical instruments should be marked by a [similar] moderation " (GIRM n. 305 and n. 313) The third Sunday of Advent is called "Gaudete" Sunday (coming from the first word of the Latin Entrance Antiphon for this day, meaning "Rejoice") and the liturgical color may be rose instead of purple. This is the Church's way of further heightening our expectation as we draw ever nearer the Solemnity of Christmas.

10 The Meaning of Advent Candles As a Christian tradition, the wreath holds the four Advent candles. The candles represent Jesus coming as the light in darkness. One candle is lit each Sunday until all four candles are lit, and sometimes a fifth candle is lit on Christmas. As Christmas draws nearer, each candle brings a little more light into the darkness. Each of the candles represents an aspect of preparation during the season of Advent: The Candle of Hope Color: Purple Purple is the primary color associated with Advent. Within the Catholic Church it symbolizes penance, preparation, and sacrifice. During the first week of Advent, we look forward to Jesus coming with hope. The Candle of Peace Color: Purple During this second week of Advent, we reflect on our lives and work on becoming better-versions-of-ourselves in preparation for Jesus coming. The Candle of Joy Color: Pink This third candle is pink, symbolizing anticipation and rejoicing. During the third week of Advent, we are filled with joy for the near arrival of Jesus on Christmas day. The Candle of Love Color: Purple During this final week of Advent we rejoice in the endless love that God has for us, which is made apparent in the birth of his Son: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 11 Haigney Holiday Fruitcake Haigney Holiday Fruitcake This is modified from my dad s original transcription, which included directions such as teacup full of milk and stir the batter until it looks normal (my all-time favorite direction). I confess that I dislike glazed fruit, so I substitute the same amount in a combination of dried fruits, usually cherries, apricots, figs, whatever is around. It s great. Fruit mixture: 1 cup dark raisins 1 cup golden raisins 1 cup glazed fruit mix (or combination of your favorite dried fruits) 1/2 cup brandy Cake: 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 2 large eggs 1/4 cup dark molasses 2 tsp. baking powder 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. allspice 1/2 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 tsp. nutmeg 1/2 tsp. ginger 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 cup whole milk 1 cup chopped walnuts The night before: In a large (preferably glass) bowl, mix together dark and golden raisins, glazed (or dried) fruit and brandy. Cover and let stand overnight. The day you re baking: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease (or spray with cooking spray) the bottom and sides of one standard-size loaf pan. Line bottom of loaf pan with foil, and spray or grease foil. In a large mixing bowl, cream together sugar and shortening. Add eggs and mix until well incorporated. Add molasses and mix well. In a separate medium bowl, sift together baking powder, flour, spices and salt. Add dry ingredients alternately with milk to batter, mixing until well combined. Stir in fruit-brandy mixture and walnuts.

12 Haigney Holiday Fruitcake Haigney Holiday Fruitcake.Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Check cake for doneness 30 minutes before end of baking time. Cake is done when a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean or with only a few crumbs. Cool cake in pan for about an hour. Loosen edges with knife or spatula and invert cake onto plate. Peel off foil from bottom. Cake will keep at least 3 to 4 weeks (or longer!) wrapped tightly in foil and stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
