2 CHURCH OF ST. CHARLES BORROMEO ST. ANTHONY, MN From the Pastor s Desk Welcome Back Students & Faculty! O n Tuesday things will be buzzing with activity again. The students and faculty of our Catholic school begin the new school year. It s hard to believe that the summer is over and another school year is beginning. Let us pray for God s blessings upon all students and teachers here and elsewhere who are beginning a new school year. Jesus said that He would send us the Spirit of Truth to lead us to all Truth. May the Holy Spirit inspire and lead us all to the Truth that will set us free. Thank you Knights of Columbus Last weekend a group of men from the Knights of Columbus helped spruce up our parish grounds. We pulled weeds, moved rocks, filled cracks and gaps and edged sidewalks among other things. Many thanks to all of the men who helped. I think you will agree that our parish grounds look a lot nicer. Departing Finance Council Members Clarence Ranallo and Jim Zellmer together joined the parish council 35 years ago. They have helped our parish through a lot of financial hurdles. On behalf of all of the parishioners I want to thank you, Clarence and Jim for your many years of service. The reason that they are stepping down is that I have implemented the Archdiocesan recommended term limits for council members. The new council members are, Tim Mezzenga, John Norris and Tom Wratkowski. Thank you Tim, John and Tom for agreeing to serve on the Finance Council. 33 Days to Morning Glory There is a group meeting on Friday, September 9 th to begin a consecration to Jesus through Mary. I have been speaking about this at Mass and I encourage people to do this or another consecration. At the cross Jesus said to St, John, Behold your mother. From that moment, we hear, The disciple took her into his home. This home is our heart. When we consecrate ourselves to Mary, we are living Jesus last command from the Cross. The Catholic Church teaches that Mary is the mediatrix of all grace because Jesus came into the world through Mary. For this same reason, St. Louis de Montfort teaches that the surest way to Jesus is through Mary. Mary wants to be a mother to us and, like any good mother, her main goal is to help us get to heaven. She told St. Juan Diego, Am I not here, I, who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need anything more? Let nothing else worry you, disturb you. When we consecrate ourselves to Mary we experience the comfort of these words. If you are not able to join the group, you can connect to the Formed website and type in our parish code (found in the bulletin) and do the consecration from the convenience of your computer or your smart phone. Either way, it is a good thing. My Consecration I mentioned at Mass that I was hesitant to do this at first. I was influenced by the Protestant thought that it was giving too much focus to Mary. But I was encouraged by many saints who have done the consecration. Two modern saints are St. John Paul II and St. Teresa of Calcutta that Fr. Gaitley refers to in his book, 33 Days to Morning Glory. When he was a boy, Karol s (John Paul II) mother died and he asked Mary to be his mother. Later he read the book on consecration, True Devotion to Mary, by St. Louis de Montfort who said that consecration to Jesus through Mary is the quickest, and suerest and easiest way to become a saint. He 2 said that reading this marked a turning point in his life. He reflected on his thoughts about reading the book, Then I understood that I could not exclude the Lord s Mother from my life without neglecting the will of God who willed to begin and fulfill the great mysteries of the history of salvation with the responsible and faithful collaboration of the humble handmaid of Nazareth. He made the Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary and lived in her motherly protection throughout his life. Towards the end of his life he wrote in his apostolic letter, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, that his personal motto Totus Tuus (Totally Yours) was inspired by the Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary. Saint Teresa of Calcutta is being canonized a saint on September 4, One of my favorite quotes from her about Mary is, If you ever feel distressed during your day call upon our Lady just say this simple prayer: Mary, Mother of Jesus, please be a mother to me now. I must admit this prayer has never failed me. St. Teresa was always seen in her familiar religious blue and white habit. The habit is similar to what is worn by poor Indian women and the blue stripe is the color of Mary. St. Teresa wants her sisters to remember that Jesus was born into the poverty of the home of Mary and Joseph. She said, Mary, give me your Heart: so beautiful, so pure, so immaculate; your Heart so full of love and humility that I may be able to receive Jesus in the Bread of Life and love Him as you love Him and serve Him in the distressing guise of the poor. As we grow close to Mary, like these great saints, Mary will lead us closer to Jesus and help us to become saints. Sincerely yours in Christ Jesus, Fr. Troy Przybilla

Upcoming Parish Outreach Opportunities Over the past year, our parish has added an international dimension to our already extensive parish outreach program. We have been collaborating with NPH (Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos Our Little Brothers and Sisters ). This great organization, founded by a priest in the 1950 s houses abandoned children in a family environment from infancy through college or trade school. They truly become members of the NPH family. This is not an orphanage looking to adopt out these children, but is designed to be a nurturing Catholic environment and provides education and life skills, including training in the practice of the Faith. Currently some 2600 young people are cared for in several homes throughout Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. There are currently two volunteer opportunities. Students from one of the homes, along with chaperones, will be coming to the Twin Cities this October to share their experiences and seek financial backing in the annual Pequeño tour. We are privileged to host a group from October Students will be present for the Sunday Masses that weekend and then will speak to us after the Mass, as well as provide entertainment. We are in need of 3 or 4 additional families in the parish willing to house the students and chaperones. In addition, we will be taking a group of adult volunteers to the Honduras home this coming February 1-6, There will be the opportunity to interact with the children and perhaps get involved in a service project. The approximate cost will be $1,500 per person. We will need to know of interest in this soon, since airline arrangements must be made in a timely manner. Please contact Deacon Najarian if you are willing to participate in either of these opportunities at or snajarian@stchb.org.
