POETRY CORNER REPARATION They say You died so long ago And yet each dawn You die again Amid the shouts and jeers of men. O Lord, was not once enough? They say You died upon a Cross So we could gain new life And yet the ones You died to save Are those who hurt Thee more each day. They say You rose on Easter morn, Bringing hope for those You loved, But Lord, what will become of them Who make Thee die each day again? Rita Goldman Come and make Reparation to the Sacred Heart this First Friday. Peace Is Happiness All desire happiness. But peace brings happiness. It is a threefold peace, that is accompanied by heavenly happiness; peace with God, peace with one s neighbor, and peace with oneself. Peace with God means union with God, perfect conformity of one s own will with the divine will, the state of grace, the joy of a good conscience, which surpasses every joy on earth. Cekada. I am visiting St. Clare in Columbus again. Last Sunday morning at the Major Litanies our church reminded me of the temple in Jerusalem, all full of processing crowds, chanting, and solemn sacrifice. Our children's choir at the 11:30 made me think of angels singing during St. Gregory the Great s procession. (We all hope they ll sing again soon.) Surely St. Michael himself was pleased with our prayers, and sheathed the sword of God s wrath. Yesterday, First Saturday, we opened Mary s month. Our May altar this year honors Our Lady of Lourdes, the Immaculate Conception, and the Victory of Christ which made her so. Here we will gather most days for May Devotions, and would be happy to have you gather with us! Did you know that all day on Sunday is the Lord s Day? This is easily forgotten, even by our own, who easily excuse themselves from Sunday Mass. Since this is essential to keep up a Catholic life and save one s soul, it should be of concern to us all. One form of reparation for those who do not keep holy the Lord s Day, is to keep it holy the old way, at least once in awhile. Make the sacrifice, you who do not live so far, to come to Sunday Vespers, the compliment to morning High Mass, and our afternoon thanksgiving for the blessings of the Sabbath day. Try to come once a month. A translation is provided, and Benediction is given. You will get in on the extra devotions of the day, e.g. May Devotions this month. You may even enjoy the Sunday afternoon drive to church, the peace and beauty of the quiet anticipated evening service. We had a simple but touching family Vespers on April 18th, and hieratic Vespers last Sunday - a bishop, a deacon and a priest in the sanctuary. Today we are having Holy Cross Vespers. I would welcome more servers, as well as more faithful. Remember the Lord s Day, to keep it holy. Our thanks go to Eldon and Dale, who are keeping our extensive grounds in good order, and to God, for the timely rains which keep everything green this beautiful Spring. Our deacon got off safely home to France last Monday. It was a pleasure having him with us these months. May is always a busy time, with Confirmation and May Crowning, Rogations and a Holy Day, as well as daily devotions to Our Lady. Be sure to set up your May altar, and set your heart to honor Our Blessed Mother. See you in church! May Mary keep you close to Jesus. Bishop Dolan

4 SUNDAY READING Most Men Love God One of the most serious obstacles to the pursuit of sanctity by the average American man and woman is the fact that very few of our lay people have emotional feeling one way or the other toward God. Because of this fact, they assume that the love of God is the monopolistic property of priests and nuns. That it is a gift from God rather than an obligation to God. That it is even incompatible with the layman s life. As regards the greatest and the first commandment, that they love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, they merely shrug their shoulders, hope for the best, and change the subject. This is a tragic mistake. It is not the layman s fault, either. It is the fault of the English language. In our language, the word love has been booted around, distorted, stretched, twisted, tortured, and rent, until it has almost no meaning left whatever, except animal passion. Actually, according to Catholic philosophers, the word love at least in a religious sense means nothing more nor less than to desire good for someone. Is there anything unreasonable about desiring good for God, or for our neighbor? Is there any sentimentality, and starry-eyed quality about such a love, to justify its repugnance to the hard mind of the most sophisticated businessman? No, there is not. As a matter of fact, every man of good-will loves God. The trouble is he doesn t usually realize it. And all because of the degradation and confusion surrounding a simple, good English word. Once lay men and women become acquainted with this odd, refreshing definition of the word love, the development, in depth and sustained animation, of their love for the good God will have hurdled its first and most formidable obstacle. Jonathan Shea Facing Persecution Look upwards and see the beautiful crown that awaits you in Heaven if you carry your cross well. It was this reward which sustained the patriarchs and prophets in their faith and persecutions; which inspired the apostles and martyrs in their labors and torments. The patriarchs could say with Moses, We would rather be afflicted with the people of God, and be happy with him forever, than enjoy for a time the pleasures of sin. And the prophets could say with David, We suffer persecution for the reward. The apostles and martyrs could say with Saint Paul, We are as men sentenced to death, put on show in front of the whole universe, angels as well as men by our suffering, and as the offal of the world, the scum of the earth, for the sake of a weight of eternal glory, which this small and temporary suffering will produce in us. Let us look upward and see the angels, who exclaim, Be careful not to forfeit the crown which is marked out for the cross you have received, if you bear it well. If you do not bear it well, another will carry it in the right spirit and will take your crown with it. Fight bravely and suffer patiently, we are told by all the saints, and you will receive an eternal kingdom. Finally, listen to our Lord Himself, who says to you, I will give my reward only to the one who suffers and is victorious through his patience. Saint Louis Mary de Montfort Saint Louis Mary de Montfort ( 1716) was a great French missionary preacher especially renowned for fostering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. ANNOUNCEMENTS CONT: PLEASE PRAY For all of our sick, shut-in and fallen away, especially our many young people who need to get babies baptized, marriages blessed, and sins confessed during Eastertime. Please pray especially for Dennis Vanderputten. Pray as well as Tom and Connie Kamphaus who need our prayers, as they bear the heavy burden of illness. News of the death of Sr. Magdalen Therese, a traditional nun from Syracuse, recently reached us. Remember her, and all of the good sisters of old, and never forget the Holy Souls, in your good prayers DRESS CODE Men, remember your jacket and tie; ladies your modest dress, and Marylike clothing. Thus will you give a good example, create a worshipful atmosphere, and honor God and His house and day. UPCOMING EVENTS June Girls Camp. 5 MONTH OF MAY MAY PRAYER O Lady reigning o er this month most green! for us yet doom d this exile to endure enmix the blazing faith of noon with sheen of starry hope that we might see the pure unsullied sunrise blinding all but Love. And thus, we beg thee, lead us to the Light ekindl d at thy gentle breast to bring to mortal eyes the blessed sight of Heaven at its gracious King s behest Ignite on earth the flame that burns above in hearts that sate unquench d divine desire to share the glory of the Trinity with children that the Father seeks to sire where er the Son is borne with Charity that roars like Fire and whispers like a Dove. Amen. WATCH YOUR WORDS A careless Word May kindle strife; A cruel word May wreck a life. A bitter word May hate instill; A brutal word May smite and kill. A gracious word May smooth the way; A joyous word May light the day. A timely word May lessen stress; A loving word May heal and bless. Ladies of St. Francis Tre donne intorno al cuor mi son venute. Dante Three women came into my heart. The first was flaxen fair, And one was gentle-eyed and dark, The other had red hair. The day we met upon the road They stopped and greeted me; I kissed the dark one on the mouth When I embraced all three. You know the one I seek, said I, Do help me find the same! And so they came into my heart, Each with a living flame. The red had hers upon a lamp Of gold, the fair likewise On one of silver, but the dark Had hers within her eyes. Not for themselves did I invite This inmost, lasting tryst, But that they are God s girls of grace Who waited once on Christ. For ruddy-crowned Obedience mourned With fair-haired Chastity Beneath the Cross, but Poverty Hung with Him on the Tree. I clasped the fair ones for their forms So Marylike and sweet: I kissed the dark one for the wounds Upon her hands and feet. Wise virgins, keep your lights alive Within my heart s small room, Bright tapers waiting in the dark The coming of the Groom. Fray Angelico Chavez May Dreams Day dreams or May dreams! What are yours worth? I think that for the most part our dreams are not worth much and that only those come true that are helpful in the procession of life. But why should we fume and fret if our little, selfish dreams never materialize? There is too much smallness in the world already. If we have light we should let it shine before men, but there is so much that is taken for light that is not even a faint ray of it! God knows which of your dreams are worth while and He allows you to make them come true. He gives you the green light and you go on and the world is conscious of your advance because the world advances with you. You light your torch or your lantern and pass it on to the next in line, praying that he keep it ablaze and hand it along, and remembering that the world is either going to be changed or unchanged according to your light. The torch may burn dimly or with a wide flare, lighting the path for few or many, and if it goes out, someone else is going to stumble because of your carelessness. The collapse of a dream the flashing of the red light is only a pause in traffic, not a signal to extinguish your torch, for the red light against you is only to give someone else the chance to go ahead with the green, or the dream, and then you go on again. Even Our Blessed Mother and Our Lord were, apparently, stopped by the red light on Calvary. His dreams and hers were to all appearances at an end. But you know what happened. And how Mary is bearing ahead for us now, with the Green Light Eternal. God be with you in your May dreams and Mary be with you when the red light says, Stop! Let her be the purring engine in your soul until the green light says, Go!

But, alas, with what ingratitude, on our part, Thine infinite kindness is repaid! Prostrate before Thine altar, where Thou art as really present as in the highest heavens, we come to make reparation for all the injuries and for all the ingratitude inflicted on Thy loving Heart in this sacrament. O divine Jesus, grant us to make a fitting reparation for all blasphemies, all profanations, and all sacrileges ever committed, for the want of devotion and neglect of preparation for Holy Communion, for the little fruit we have drawn from it. Pardon, O Lord, pardon, for so many Christians, who know Thee not and who offend Thee; for so many heretics who insult Thee, for so many impious men and apostates who persecute Thee. By the fervor of our love we would wish to make amends to Thee for all their contempt and for all their sacrileges. How happy should we be, O Jesus, could we but make reparation to Thy glory by our respect, by our zeal, aye even by the shedding of our blood. At least, most adorable Saviour, grant us the grace to love Thee in the most holy Sacrament of the Altar, with the most tender, the most generous, the most perfect, the most constant love. Virgin most holy, by thy holy and Immaculate Heart, make us enter into the adorable Heart of thy divine Son, Jesus Christ.
