2 ANNOUNCEMENTS JANUARY 13, 2013 OCTAVE DAY OF THE EPIPHANY Sunday classes are at 10:40 AM. Vespers are sung at 4:45 PM, followed by Benediction. ALTER CHRISTUS $ was donated this month for Masses for the sanctification and support of priests. Thank you for your generosity. THIS WEEK St. Hilary starts the school week. Hilary Term is still named for him in England. The American victory (War of 1812) of Our Lady of Prompt Succor is honored on Tuesday, feast of St. Paul, the first Hermit. Tuesday we will conduct the funeral services in absentia for Marty Lierl. Rosary will be recited at 11:00 followed by Requiem High Mass and Absolution at 11:20. Requiem High Mass will be sung for Stella Drwiega of Detroit, a zealous Catholic and friend of many priests and seminarians. Our Lady of Hope (a useful title) or of Pontmain comes Thursday with St. Anthony of Egypt, and of course St. Peter s Chair on Friday. Saturday s devotional feast has a wonderful title: The Immaculate Heart of Mary, Refuge of Sinners. THE CHAIR OF UNITY OCTAVE Friday we open the Chair of Unity Octave, with special prayers each day for the conversion of different non-catholic groups, ending on the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (Jan. 25). Pope St. Pius X sanctioned and blessed this devotion, and Pope Benedict XV extended its observance to the Universal Church, highly enriching it with indulgences. The Chair of Unity Octave has accomplished an immense good in awakening Catholics to the need of interesting themselves in the conversion of those outside the fold. When the enemies of Christ seem to be triumphing as never before, how great is our obligation to pour forth fervent prayer for the millions who wander in darkness! An Indulgence of 300 days is granted each day during the octave, with a plenary indulgence on the usual conditions at the close of this devotion. THE CHAIR OF ST. PETER If you missed Bishop Dolan s recent web radio interview on the subject of this Feast, its history and its importance, you can listen on-demand at blogtalkradio.com/restorationradio NEXT SUNDAY The blessing of expectant mothers will be given after all Masses. Closing ceremonies for the Twelve Sundays of the Mother of Good Counsel follow the High Mass. Set Your Missal: Epiphany II, with commemoration of Ss. Fabian & Sebastian, Trinity Preface. How many souls we may convert by our prayers! There are some among them for whom one Pater and Ave would be enough to turn the scale. St. John Vianney PLEASE PRAY... for Fr. Thielen s brother, who is seriously ill, for Margaret Kinnett, Rob Brockman, Kandy Theriot, Sr. Marie Helene of France, Sr. M. Dolorosa, recovering from cancer surgery, several special intentions including one for the Sisters of Our Lady of Reparation, and for the repose of the soul of Bishop Vezelis. Live with Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as if you were alone in the world with them in their little home at Nazareth. Charles de Foucauld UPCOMING EVENTS Saturday, February 2nd: Candlemas. Join us for the Procession & Mass of the Candles at 9:00 AM, followed by a Winter Soup Lunch as we mark the close of the Christmas Season. The church will provide bread and beverages. 3 ON THEWATER OFOURLORD S BAPTISM Each blest drop, on each blest limb, Is washt itself, in washing Him: Tis a Gem while it stays here, While it falls hence tis a Tear. Richard Crashaw (ca ) A School of Sanctity If we follow the life of Mary step by step, always and everywhere we shall observe in her the same characteristics. Whether she searches sorrowingly for the Child Jesus lost in Jerusalem; or whether Our Lord, when told that His Mother stands without, from higher, supernatural motives, pays no heed to her wish to see Him, she is ever the same, the handmaid of the Lord, submissive to His divine will, accepting everything in silence and patience; until finally she stands beneath the Cross, the model for all Christians of pious resignation under the most painful circumstances, the most heartrending afflictions. Here also we may learn of her, learn to renounce our own will to follow in all things the will of God. QUIET TIME WITH OUR LORD AND OUR LADY Again, in the narrative of the marriage at Cana of Galilee, we may behold and admire another virtue which shines forth brightly in Mary charity to her neighbor, her attribute as intercessor for the afflicted. This virtue, grand in itself, rich in blessings for man, which surrounds the name of Mary with a special halo, was first made conspicuous at that nuptial feast, when, the wine failing, she said to Our Lord, They have no wine ; in those simple words interceding for the embarrassed hosts. Since that day the Blessed Virgin has never ceased to be the Refuge of the Afflicted, the Help of Christians; ready for God s sake to serve and help all mankind in their necessities. Learn of Mary not merely to pray for yourself, but to intercede for others; not merely to bear your own trials and sufferings with resignation, but lovingly to help others to endure their afflictions. The Ave Maria The miraculous image of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, New Orleans, honored on January 15th. This Queen is so compassionate and benign, that when a sinner, whoever he may be, recommends himself to Her charity, she does not question his merits, or if he is worthy, but she hears and succors all. St. Bernard Prayer for the Octave Day of the Epiphany OJesus, I adore Thee in the mystery of Thy Incarnation, Passion, and Death, as meriting the grace of the Sacrament of Baptism; but especially do I adore Thee in the mystery of Thy holy Baptism in the River Jordan. I adore all the dispositions of Thy divine soul in this mystery, and all the designs Thou didst then deign to have in my regard. How different was Thy Baptism, Lord, from ours! In Thy Baptism Thou didst take upon Thyself our sins, to make satisfaction and do penance for them before the Father of heaven, in the desert and on the Cross, while in our baptism Thou didst lift from us the burden of our sins, washing and effacing them in Thy Precious Blood. Baptize me with the Baptism of the Holy Ghost and of fire, even as Thy blessed precursor, St. John the Baptist, assures us Thou dost baptize, that is, consume all my sins in the fire of Thy holy love, and by the power of Thy divine spirit. St. John Eudes With Jesus, we have entered the waters of baptism; with Jesus, we have left the land of slavery to sin and death; with Christ we have risen as members of the body of the Word made flesh, Whose coming we have celebrated during the season of Christmas and Epiphany now drawing to a close. We now have a journey to make: let us follow the holy Lamb of God from death to life! The Magnificat Bright mirror of all virtues, holiest Mary, ask for us grace to keep our hearts forever pure.

4 Kintucky Cents and Dollars With the New Year came the passage of some not-so-new monetary policies higher taxes and a continuance of irresponsible government spending. Almost all senators rang in the new year by patting themselves on the back for averting the fiscal cliff, while eight of us shook our heads, disapproving the passage of yet another seriously flawed financial deal. The combination of raising taxes and increasing spending is not in Americans best interest, and I could not, in good faith, support this piece of legislation. As a result of the budget deal that was passed, 70 percent of U.S. households will pay higher taxes in 2013 than they did in Of these households, the tax increase is anywhere from $2,000 to $73,000. Tax revenue will go up by $620 billion, while no real government spending cuts will be made. This is a 41:1 ratio of tax increases to spending cuts. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush implemented tax hikes at a 2-to-1 ratio $2 in spending cuts for every $1 in tax increases. We are still paying these taxes today and have yet to see such spending cuts. With a current deficit of more than $16 trillion, we will never be able to balance a budget without real spending cuts. We will never be able to tax our way out of this financial hole, and we shouldn t have to. Income taxes of any sort will never be able to fund the type of big government this administration is creating. The truth remains: If taking more money from the private sector is harmful, it doesn t matter whom you tax or what form the revenue increase takes. Taking more money out of the private sector is injurious to economic growth. Every dollar the government takes is another dollar poorly spent. Every dollar removed from the private sector and wasted in the hands of bureaucrats is a dollar that will be used unproductively. Sending more taxpayer dollars to Washington is not and will never be the solution. This administration is spending well beyond its means, and until we cut spending, our economy will forever reside in a deficit. I am disappointed in the majority of my colleagues. Where are the Republican calls for reducing revenue to government? Where are the calls for lowering taxes? The passage of this deal further proves how out of touch the legislators in Washington are. The typical American household follows a budget and does not spend SIMPLE AND SENSIBLE beyond its means. Yet our government is taking more money out of hardworking Americans pockets only to spend it in an unproductive and wasteful manner. My constituents in Kentucky demand cuts in government spending, and I will continue to fight for the American taxpayers and small businesses in the 113th Congress. Rand Paul, U.S. senator from Kentucky Sobran Sense Thoughts from Joe Sobran The attempt to silence a man is the greatest honor you can bestow on him. It means that you recognize his superiority to yourself. If Communism was liberalism in a hurry, liberalism is Communism in slow motion. Politicians never accuse you of greed for wanting other people s money only for wanting to keep your own money. The difference between a politician and a pickpocket is that the pickpocket doesn t get indignant when you tell him to keep his hands to himself. At the end of a century (20th- Ed. note) that has seen the evils of Communism, Nazism and other modern tyrannies, the impulse to centralize power remains amazingly persistent. In 100 years we have gone from teaching Latin and Greek in high school to teaching Remedial English in college. By a very conservative estimate, a hundred million people have died at the hands of their own governments in this (20th) century. Given that record, how bad could anarchy be? Let us be raised to the One who made the dust of our lowliness into the Body of His glory St Leo the Great

5 The Pope s Triple Crown The tiara, or triple crown of the Pope, was originally a plain high cap, much like those in which the Doges of Venice are so often represented in old pictures and medals. It was first introduced by Pope Nicholas I, in 860. It is doubtful when the first coronet was added; but. the second was placed by Pope Boniface VIII., in 295; and the third by Pope Urban V, about It has been held that the three crowns refer to the Holy Trinity, though that evidently could not have been the original idea, or they would not have been added one after the other, with an intervening interval in each case of many years. Others affirm that they denote the threefold royalty of the Bishop of Rome: one being the symbol of the temporal power over the Roman States; another, the spiritual exercised over the souls of men; and the third, the authority over all the kings and potentates of Christendom. The Ave Maria The Church... does not have to free herself from the past; all that is needed is to take up again, with the help of the true workers for a social restoration, the organisms which the Revolution shattered. St Pius X THE CHAIR IS VACANT... THE TEACHING ENDURES POPE SENSE Catholic Social Teaching In Sertum Laetitiae, dated November 1, 1939, Pope Pius XII exhorted the bishops (of the United States) to promote the Church s social doctrine and defend the moral law. When the moral law is ignored, or despised, warned Pius, thence arise immoderate and blind egoists, that thirst for pleasure, the vice of drunkenness, immodest and costly styles in dress, the prevalence of crime even among minors, the lust for power, neglect of the poor, base craving for ill-gotten wealth, the flight from the land, levity in entering into marriage, divorce, the breakup of the family, the cooling of mutual affection between parents and children, birth control, the enfeeblement of the race, the weakening of respect for authority, or obsequiousness, or rebellion, neglect of duty toward one s country and toward mankind. Pius XII continued: We raise Our voice in strong, albeit paternal, complaint that in so many schools of your land Christ often is despised or ignored, the explanation of the universe and mankind is forced within the narrow limits of materialism or of rationalism, and new educational systems are sought after which cannot but produce a sorrowful harvest in the intellectual and moral life of the nation. (to be continued) Paul Likoudis, The Wanderer PRAYER TO ST. PETER, PRINCE OF THE APOSTLES O Blessed Apostle Peter! who by the mercy of God and the watchfulness of thy paternal love are still faithful, oh! preserve us in the faith of Rome, and submission to thy legitimate successors. Instruct us in the mysteries which have been confided to thy teaching. What the Father revealed to thee, do thou reveal to us: show us Jesus, thy beloved Master; lead us to His Crib; and let us, after thine own example, be blessed by not being scandalized at His deep humiliations, even unto our day, but ever to say thy beautiful confession: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. Amen. Chair of Unity Octave Prayer Antiphon: That they all may be one, as Thou, Father, in Me and I in Thee; that they also may be one in Us; that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me. V. I say unto thee that thou art Peter. R. And upon this Rock I will build My Church. Let us pray: O Lord Jesus Christ, Who saidst unto Thine Apostles: Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: regard not our sins, but the faith of Thy Church, and vouchsafe to grant unto her that peace and unity which are agreeable to Thy Will. Who livest and reignest God forever and ever. Amen.

6 THE BISHOP S CORNER By all accounts, our Epiphany was a glorious one, with the shining Solemn High Mass, regal music, and the Epiphany sacramentals blessed and distributed. Be sure to do your family home blessing, and consecrate your house with blessed chalk and incense, and holy water. That way you bring the holiness home with you, which is always the idea. Each one of our homes should be a little church, with Jesus enthroned as King of Love in its midst. Epiphany was also our Benefactors Appreciation Sunday, and I thank Mark Lotarski for his clever and creative way of getting the rolls out to you. I also thank Mark, who not only is our school principal, but who with wife Joan does so much for our church, a true bene-factor. Finally, thank you. So many do so very much all year long. God repay you, as the Spanish say. Meanwhile my first post-op trip with smoothly, as I traveled to sunny but chilly Mexico. Was I ever cold! There is nothing so penetrating as desert cold, even though the temperature stays in the forties. The short days were sunny, but not enough to warm up the interiors. I admire the pluck of the priest and faithful in Tijuana, who make do without heating, and patiently bear the extremes of cold and heat, as well as long waits to cross the U.S. border. Despite the chill, still there was the warmth of the Holy Ghost felt in the enthusiastic welcome, the 23-some Confirmations, and throughout the young congregation of some 150 souls at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Tijuana. To travel is always to learn of God s goodness and providence, as well as encouraging things about our brethren in the Faith. We are not alone! This was a good weekend for me to visit a new church. Not only is Epiphany one of the Church s three greatest feasts (the Pentecost of Christmas, they say) but the moment seemed right for me. December 8th would have been too soon after surgery. As it was, I had my checkup and all clear last week, with the highly desired P.S.A. score of zero. Thank you again for your concern and prayers. They say this is the worst flu season in awhile, but many of us just seem to have lingering colds. Thank God. The mild weather which has melted away Winter and its white Christmas may bring us some pleasant sunny days, which would help. Word has reached us via India (and not Kentucky, as one would have thought) of the death of Bishop Louis Vezelis, OFM on January 1st. He was one of the early pioneer priests who visited the Catholic group in Kentucky for a number of years, and finally founded his own church there. While his was a highly controversial and even divisive character, many souls are indebted to him for the Mass and Sacraments over the years. I recall gratefully his first ordination (which took place on Brueggemann Row in Kentucky), Fr. Francis Miller, OFM, a most excellent and apostolic priest, now in Lafayette, Louisiana. Say a prayer for Bishop Vezelis, now with God, to find peace for his soul at last. I also feel a sense of peace to have learned whatever happened to Marty Lierl, who died December 18th at the age of 94. His family never returned our calls. I made a point to check the local death notices each day in the paper, and finally found him last week. He is scheduled for a memorial service at the nursing home where he died. We will have a funeral service for him here, at his church, this week on Tuesday at 11:00 AM. May he rest in peace. An excellent New Year s resolution is to remember our dead with a daily prayer. Surely this will guarantee that we ourselves will not be forgotten after we leave this life for eternity. God bless you, and keep you faithful from your Baptism until your Requiem Mass! Bishop Dolan Lo! You were Somebody all of a sudden. In this line of his Magnificat, Paul Claudel A Vespers Miracle describes the grace which, at the age of 18, brought him back to God after a boyhood of infidelity. It was Christmas Day, and having nothing better to do, he attended Vespers at Notre Dame, hoping the Church s liturgy would provide him with inspiration for his poetry. Suddenly he was overwhelmed by the awareness of God as a great personal reality, as Somebody, and from that moment, his whole thought and life became dominated by the great presence so unexpectedly revealed to him. The Magnificat It would be a miracle if anybody wandered into Vespers on a Sunday afternoon! Bring an in del and see what happens
