Communion We are celebrating the Lord s Supper today. What is this Sacrament? It is the receiving of Christ s body and blood, together with the bread and wine, for the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins (Mt. 26:17-29; 1 Cor. 11:23-29). It is an expression of unity among us when it comes to the teachings of Jesus (Jn. 8:31,32). If you are visiting with us today, please speak with one of our Pastors about receiving this Sacrament. 3 THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN LENT: PALM SUNDAY INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES P: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. P: Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord s paschal mystery. Today we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week. Christ entered in triumph into his own city to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us remember with devotion his entry that culminated at the empty tomb and follow him with a lively faith. United with him by Baptism, we share in his resurrection and new life. P: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! PSALM 118 Men will sing the first half of each verse, women the second. 6 THE WORD FIRST LESSON Isaiah 45: Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. 23 By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear. 24 They will say of me, In the Lord alone are deliverance and strength. All who have raged against him will come to him and be put to shame. 25 But all the descendants of Israel will find deliverance in the Lord and will make their boast in him. PSALM OF THE DAY (5:00, 9:15) Psalm 24 P: The earth is the LORD S, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; Men: for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. Women: Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? P: He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. Refrain: Cantor Refrain: Congregation The Lord s is the earth and its fullness, the world, and those who dwell in it. It is he who set it on the seas; on the rivers he made it firm. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. GOSPEL Luke 19: After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? say, The Lord needs it. 32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt? 34 They replied, The Lord needs it. 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher, rebuke your disciples! 40 I tell you, he replied, if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out. 9 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THANK OFFERING Moved by God s love in Christ, we offer him our first and best gifts, purely out of thanks to him. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Lord Jesus, you are the King of heaven and earth. We join the first Palm Sunday worshipers in praising and glorifying you for coming to this earth to be our Savior. Though you are one with God the Father and Lord of all, you humbled yourself and became one with us. Thanks be to you for living a life of perfect conformity to God s holy law in our place. Praise be to you for being obedient to death, even death on a cross, to redeem us from sin. Cause our voices to blend with those who sang your praises as you rode into Jerusalem. Move us to confess you before others as our Lord. Help us proclaim the message of peace and forgiveness to people of all nations. Use us to assure all people that your blood has cleansed them from sin and set them free from slavery to sin, death, and the devil. Move us to dedicate all we are and have to your glory. 9

10 Lord Jesus, you are King over all the earth. Bless the nations of this world with wise rulers and good government. Let peace prevail. Grant success to the businesses and industries of our land to serve for the common good. Cause all employers to be honest and fair-minded and all employees to be diligent and faithful. Look with favor on our nation s schools. Be with those who teach and those who learn. Comfort the sick and the afflicted with the assurance of your care and protection. Strengthen the faith of the dying. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. Dear Savior, as we walk with you this week toward Calvary, keep us focused on your purpose for coming into this world and on our calling to spread this wonderful message of salvation. We praise and thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil s power. By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven. Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant and joyful hearts. GRADE 2&3 TEACHER CALLED The Lord has led our congregation to Call Mrs. Monica Schultz to teach in Bethlehem s Gr. 2&3 classroom beginning next school year. Mrs. Schultz is currently serving as a teacher at Bloomington Lutheran School in Minnesota. Her husband, Dan, recently accepted the Call to serve as principal of Good Shepherd Lutheran School in West Bend. We pray for the Lord to guide her as she begins deliberation of this Call into the ministry. CALL MEETING A call meeting to call a teacher for Grade 6 for the School Year will be held on April 14 th at 11:30 am at the Menomonee Falls campus. EASTER VIGIL Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Hubertus invites the members of the WELS and ELS congregations in our area to attend its first Easter Vigil service on Holy Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. The Vigil begins at sunset on Easter Eve, and anticipates the resurrection of Jesus through Scripture, song, silence, and prayer. The joyful announcement of Jesus resurrection occurs near the end of the service, marking the transition from Lent to Easter, and the service concludes with the Lord s Supper. To accomplish this, we are partnering with Chaplains in Schools, a group of pastors and other Christians who are working to connect children in Milwaukee schools with Jesus and a faith community.
