May God bless you! John Fontaine & Chantel Basel Stephen Ministers Needed Did you know that 98% of our 23 Stephens ministers are busy caring for care receivers? We often do not have a Stephen Minister available to care for a new person who calls in need. We are prayerfully seeking new students to join our new class which begins in the fall on Monday evenings. We train 3 Mondays a month from October April. We offer training on caring for a person who is going through challenges such as grief, job loss, marriage struggles, health issues, aging parents, and family crisis. Could you consider yourself a Stephen Minister and become a Christian listening ear? The Stephen Ministry is named for Stephen, one of seven members selected by the early Church to care for those within their community who were in need. His story is told in Acts, chapters 6 and 7. The program is designed to help couples share, feel and leave with a positive, hopeful experience to feel more connected to God and each other. Each session has a theme and is offered on a rotating basis throughout the year, on a monthly basis and you may begin with any session. All couples, engaged and married, are invited to attend. This month s topics are Can We Have an Enjoyable Sex Life Without a Close Emotional Life? and What are the Common Problems of a Committed Marriage/Relationship? Greg Piatt Christians need to reflect Mary s joy at the Visitation This week, the Catholic Church completes the Marian month of May with the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Thursday. The Feast of the Visitation commemorates how Mary, after learning that she is pregnant with the Messiah, goes at once to visit her elderly cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with St. John the Baptist. Feeling the presence of Jesus, John the Baptist, upon the arrival of Mary, leapt for joy in Elizabeth s womb. And at that moment, John was cleansed from original sin and filled with God s grace. On the feast in 2016, Pope Francis said Mary, a teenager, shows great courage to travel without hesitation to help her cousin shows great courage. Serving others is a Christian sign, said the pope, according to the Catholic News Agency. Pope Francis urged Christians to serve other people, without delay or hesitation, saying if we reach out in this way, the world would be a very different place. The Visitation, the pope said, is a lesson in service and joy in the Christian life. The pope explained that Mary s encounter with Elizabeth shows the importance of joy, which is powerful enough to give meaning and direction to our lives. When we reach out to help others this allows Christ to work within us and we then imitate Mary, Pope Francis reflected. Mary s joy is then expressed in the beautiful Mary s Canticle or better known as the Magnificat: My soul magnifies the greatness of the Lord. My spirit rejoices in God my savior The Magnificat, taken from Luke (1:46-55), is all at once a history lesson, a song of praise and a prophetic message. In the prayer, Mary celebrates the magnificent things God has done for His people throughout the centuries. She praises Him for His might, wisdom and goodness. Then, the Blessed Mother accepts the incredible responsibility God gave her to be called blessed by every generation. She did this without giving any credit to herself. In Elizabeth s greeting at the Visitation, Mary s faith acquires a new consciousness and a new expression of her faith, because what was hidden in the depths of the obedience of faith at the Annunciation is now expressed openly, Pope St. John Paul II wrote in his 1987 encyclical Redemptoris Mater. The Magnificat is an inspired profession of Mary s faith, in which her response to the revealed word is expressed in exultation toward God, the late Polish pope wrote. In Mary s joy, she reflects the greatness of God like the moon reflects the sun. And any honor given to her does not detract from her divine Son. She deflects all the praise given her right back to God, the source of her greatness, the saintly pope said. Mary s prayer is one of thanksgiving, which means Eucharist in Greek. In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI s reflection on the Visitation considered this. She is a young maiden, but she is not afraid, because God is with her, and within her, Pope Benedict said, according to the Zenit News Agency. In a certain sense, we can say that her trip was the first Eucharistic procession in history. The Vatican II Council in its document, Lumen Gentium, calls for Christians to imitate Mary in her virtues and faith. Doctor of the Church, St. Ambrose, 4 th Century bishop of Milan, reflected this when he said: Let Mary s soul be in each of you to proclaim the greatness of the Lord.
