Today s first readg describes some of joy ready for those who live life God wishes for us, callg us from bondage of quarrelg and fger-potg to freedom of a life which all our lives and goods are God s gifts for whole community. The readg from Letter to Hebrews contrasts terrifyg encounter God when law was first given, dive encounter that we are promised: a festal celebration City of God, which all gared are blessed new and abundant life. The author here is careful terror and celebration are both real; we are encouraged to use our freedom to offer God our very best selves. In today s Gospel readg, Jesus touches and heals a crippled woman, public, on Sabbath, and synagogue an occasion for public celebration, right? But celebration doesn t always come easily - and someone crowd grumbles that Jesus violated protocols for holy day of rest. Jesus schools his listeners: liberate one anor and do justice now. - Jeffrey Hookom, Precentor highlights Lucas Meachem Concert Saturday, August 27 2 p.m. The ternationally-acclaimed opera star of SF Opera s Barber of Seville and Don Giovanni will perform some of world s most renowned arias stunng settg of Grace Cadral. 10 The Readgs Isaiah 58:9b 14 If you remove yoke from among you, potg of fger, speakg of evil, if you offer your food to hungry and satisfy needs of afflicted, n your light shall rise darkness and your gloom be like noonday. The Lord will guide you contually, and satisfy your needs parched places, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a sprg of water, whose waters never fail. Your ancient rus shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up foundations of many generations; you shall be called repairer of breach, restorer of streets to live. If you refra from tramplg Sabbath, from pursug your own terests on my holy day; if you call Sabbath a delight and holy day of Lord honorable; if you honor it, not gog your own ways, servg your own terests, or pursug your own affairs; n you shall take delight Lord, and I will make you ride upon heights of earth; I will feed you heritage of your ancestor Jacob, for mouth of Lord has spoken. Hebrews 12:18 29 You have not come to somethg that can be touched, a blazg fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made hearers beg that not anor word be spoken to m. (For y could not endure order that was given, If even an animal touches mounta, it shall be stoned to death. Indeed, so terrifyg was sight that Moses said, I tremble fear. ) But you have come to Mount Zion and to city of livg God, heavenly Jerusalem, and to numerable angels festal garg, and to assembly of firstborn who are enrolled heaven, and to God judge of all, and to spirits of righteous made perfect, and to Jesus, mediator of a new covenant, and to sprkled blood that speaks a better word than blood of Abel. See that you do not refuse one who is speakg; for if y did not escape when y refused one who warned m on earth, how much less will we escape if we reject one who warns from heaven! At that time his voice shook earth; but now he has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only earth but also heaven. This phrase, Yet once more, dicates removal of what is shaken that is, created thgs so that what cannot be shaken may rema. Therefore, sce we are receivg a kgdom that cannot be shaken, let us give thanks, by which we offer to God an acceptable worship reverence and awe; for deed our God is a consumg fire. Luke 13: Jesus was teachg one of synagogues on Sabbath. And just n re appeared a woman a spirit that had crippled her for eighteen years. She was bent over and was quite unable to stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he called her over and said, Woman, you are set free from your ailment. When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praisg God. But leader of synagogue, dignant because Jesus had cured on Sabbath, kept sayg to crowd, There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be cured, and not on Sabbath day. But Lord answered him and said, You hypocrites! Does not each of you on Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from manger, and lead it away to give it water? And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on Sabbath day? When he said this, all his opponents were put to shame; and entire crowd was rejoicg at all wonderful thgs that he was dog. Servg assembly: The Rev.
