Please join us for this powerful and moving presentation of Jesus final days and crucifixion. Garage Sale News The youth from St. Mark are sponsoring a Garage Sale on Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19 at the Center. The proceeds will go toward funding their summer mission trips. Please help their endeavor by searching your cabinets, Donated item drop off dates at the Center are: Saturdays May 5 and May am to 3 pm Sundays May 6 and May 13 9 am to 12 pm Help will be available to unload your items. If you have items you are unable to drop off, please call Sharon Blazek at or Judy Fell at to schedule a convenient time for a pick-up from your home. NOTE: We are not able to accept items of clothing, infant cribs or car seats. Thoughts from the Loft In the WOW! curriculum, we have been spending some time on talking about the various parts of the liturgical service. The liturgy each Sunday is comprised of Propers and Ordinaries. The Propers change each Sunday, and the Ordinaries remain the same. I think it fitting to begin an explanation of the liturgical service with the Kyrie. The original Kyrie was sung in Greek. The text is as follows: Kyrie eleison (Lord have mercy upon us), Christe eleison (Christ have mercy upon us), Kyrie eleison (Lord have mercy upon us). These words should be familiar to you as one of the first parts of the liturgy we sing after the opening hymn each Sunday. The texts and music may change for the Kyrie from week to week, but the general idea of prayerful invocation remains the same. 3 CrossBeams April 2012 St. Mark Youth! Another great year of youth basketball at St. Mark has come to a close. We d like to thank the participants and adult volunteers who work hard to make this important ministry happen. A special thanks also goes to the coaches and their helpers, especially Tony Molini, Ron Johnson, Jason Johnson, and Mark Branch, for using their gifts and time to mentor these young people in the spirit of Christian sport. The Boy s Junior High team finished the season in 1 st place! In their champion game, they defeated St. Raymond with a very exciting finish in overtime! Great job guys! The Boy s High School team also made it to the final championship game in their tournament but lost a heartbreaker in overtime against The Orchard Evangelical Free Church. So, they finished their season in 2 nd place. What a great and exciting season for all teams! Vacation Bible School Renew! It may seem like summer is still a long way off, but it will be here before you know it! So, we re starting to gear up for another great year of Vacation Bible School. This year, VBS will be held July 9 th -14 th and we ll meet from -noon. We re using some new curriculum called Renew, which focuses on how our faith in Christ can help us care for the Earth. There are lots of ways to help out and VBS can be a great outreach tool for St. Mark. So, let s make this another wonderful experience for our young people! Please connect with Pastor Dan to learn about the many ways you can help! News St. Mark and Enrichment Center has been abuzz with fun units and events for both students and their families. The students had a blast working on a building unit, creating structures from wood and boxes donated by preschool families. They explored balance, symmetry, structural integrity, etc. without even knowing it what fun to learn through such creative and constructive play! The 3 s spent a special Saturday at school with their dads, who had a great time building with their children. The 4 s are creating amazing art relating to Chicago landmarks, including the Navy Pier ferris wheel, The Bean, jellyfish from the Shedd Aquarium, and the Trump Tower. We have one healthy bunch of preschoolers thanks to the very informative Healthy Bodies unit. The classrooms had makeshift doctors offices in them, complete with cots for examinations. Thank you to all the parents who shared their expertise during this unit. The students learned about taking care of themselves from a dentist, dental hygienists, a massage therapist, and a CT technician. On March 22 Kristin Michalczyk, a former St. Mark parent and a Pilates/Yoga instructor, taught St. Mark s parents about relaxation and healthy bodies through a Piyo class. The Advisory Board thanks her for volunteering her time for this Parent Education program. The preschool is gearing up for the annual family fun fair on April 21. Back by popular demand, Dave DiNaso s Traveling World of Reptiles will be joining us for a show. The gym will be filled with games and crafts, and the kids will enjoy making their own snacks. To make the day even more fun filled, students and families can dine at Photo s, which has offered to donate 25% of all St Mark families sales back to the preschool. Families are invited to attend St. Mark Church services at 10:00 a.m. on April 22 for

4 CrossBeams April 2012 Sunday. The students will sing songs, and their artwork will be on display. The Advisory Board will provide special treats following the service. It will be a busy, special weekend for our families! Backpack Ministry The Backpack Ministry helps feed Mt. Prospect school children on weekends and has been able to fill eight backpacks weekly since the school year started. Donations are appreciated and we currently are in need of canned fruit, pasta meals, granola bars, raisins and individual packages of cookies. (The complete food lists are on table in coffee area). Donation drop-off baskets are at sanctuary and office entrances. Volunteers are needed to help pack the backpacks which takes 30 minutes. Packing can be done on Sunday after church, Wednesday before confirmation or other times too. Senior Lunch Bunch [formerly the Senior Breakfast Club] Thursday, April 26, 2012 Toscano s Restaurant, 1859 W. Central Road Meet at the restaurant at 1 pm. RSVP by April 23 rd.
