G R A C E C O M M U N I T Y Presbyterian Church, PCA ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD July 2, :30 AM Reflection: Prayer is beyond any question the highest activity of the human soul. Man is at his greatest and highest when upon his knees, he comes face to face with God. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Prelude Welcome WORSHIP IN PRAISE Silent Preparation Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below, Praise Him above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Amen. Call to Worship...Psalm 86 Minister: People: Minister: People: Minister: People: Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. Guard my life, for I am devoted to you. You are my God; save your servant who trusts in you. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I call to you all day long. Bring joy to your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. Prayer of Invocation 1
Hymn of Invocation...His Love Can Never Fail 2
Hymn of Preparation...I Need Thee Every Hour (#674) Prayer is the only entryway into genuine self-knowledge. It is also the main way we experience deep change the reordering of our loves. Prayer is how God gives us so many of the unimaginable things he has for us. Indeed, prayer makes it safe for God to give us many of the things we most desire. It is the way we know God, the way we finally treat God as God. Prayer is simply the key to everything we need to do and be in life. Tim Keller WORSHIP IN CONFESSION AND PARDON Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Words of Comfort and Promise...from Psalm 86 You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. 3
Hymn of Response...Wonderful, Merciful Savior Only a sight of His glory, and nothing else, will truly satisfy God s people. The hearts of believers are like a magnetized needle which cannot rest until it is pointing north. So also, a believer, magnetized by the love of Christ, will always be restless until he or she comes to Christ and beholds His glory. By beholding the glory of Christ by faith we shall find rest to our souls. Our minds are apt to be filled with troubles, fears, cares, dangers, distresses, ungoverned passions and lusts. By these our thoughts are filled with chaos, darkness and confusion. But where the soul is fixed on the glory of Christ then the mind finds rest and peace for to be spiritually minded is peace (Rom. 8:6). John Owen 4
Confession of Faith...The Heidelberg Catechism* Ruling Elder Dan Bent Elder: People: Christian, what is your only comfort in life and in death? That I am not my own, But belong Body and soul, In life and in death To my faithful Savior Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven: In fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to Him, Christ, by His Holy Spirit, Assures me of eternal life and makes me whole-heartedly willing and ready from now on to live for Him. Elder: People: What must you know to live and die in the joy of this comfort? Three things: First, how great my sin and misery are; Second, how I am set free from all my sins and misery; Third, how I am to thank God for such deliverance. Commissioned by elector Frederick III, The Heidelberg Catechism was written in 1563 by the theological faculty at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. The catechism takes the form of question and answer, and is divided into 52 sections, designed to be taught on 52 Sundays throughout the year. Along with The Belgic Confession and The Canons of Dort, it is one of the Three Forms of Unity, which are the doctrinal standards to which many Reformed churches around the world subscribe. 5
WORSHIP AND THE MEANS OF GRACE The First Reading of God s Word...James 1:2-12 p.1011 The Second Reading of God s Word...Psalm 86:1-17 p.494 Reader: This is the Word of God. People: Amen! Prayer of Consecration We offer an optional Children s Church for children 4 years old through 1 st grade. If you choose to have your children participate, you may dismiss them for CC as we sing the hymn printed below. Please know we welcome and encourage your children to remain with you during the sermon. However, in CC they will be hearing from the same text that the sermon is based upon, so you may discuss the message as a family after church if you wish to do so. Hymn of Preparation...Teach Me, O Lord, Thy Holy Way (#532) Hearing from God s Word...Psalm 86 Rev. Davis W. Morgan In the Day of Trouble The Westminster Larger Catechism: Q How is the word made effectual to salvation? A. The Spirit of God makes the reading, but especially the preaching of the word, an effectual means of enlightening, convincing, and humbling sinners; of driving them out of themselves, and drawing them unto Christ; of conforming them to his image, and subduing them to his will; of strengthening them against temptations and corruptions; of building them up in grace, and establishing their hearts in holiness and comfort through faith unto salvation. 6
THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Please see instructions on the inside back cover of your bulletin Use the quotes below to help focus your heart and mind on this celebration: We can put it this way: the man who has faith is the man who is no longer looking at himself and no longer looking to himself. He no longer looks at anything he once was. He does not look at what he is now. He does not even look at what he hopes to be as the result of his own efforts. He looks entirely to the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work, and rests on that alone. He has ceased to say, Ah yes, I used to commit terrible sins but I have done this and that. He stops saying that. If he goes on saying that, he has not got faith. Faith speaks in an entirely different manner and makes a man say, Yes I have sinned grievously, I have lived a life of sin, yet I know that I am a child of God because I am not resting on any righteousness of my own; my righteousness is in Jesus Christ and God has put that to my account. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Wait on the Lord is a constant refrain in the Psalms, and it is a necessary word, for God often keeps us waiting. He is not in such a hurry as we are, and it is not his way to give more light on the future than we need for action in the present, or to guide us more than one step at a time. When in doubt, do nothing, but continue to wait on God. When action is needed, light will come. J.I. Packer Christianity offers not merely a consolation but a restoration not just of the life we had but of the life we always wanted but never achieved. And because the joy will be even greater for all that evil, this means the final defeat of all those forces that would have destroyed the purpose of God in creation, namely, to live with his people in glory and delight forever. Tim Keller We do not proclaim grace so that anyone will make light of sin or of our duty to resist it. We herald God s amazing mercy in order to join with the Spirit in stirring up in his people such a love for God that, when the day of evil comes, they will gladly put on the full armor he provides. Then, despite the hardships and the pain God s people may face in the battle, they will stand strong in the power of his might. Bryan Chappell 7
Communion Hymns Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us (#599) Dorothy Thrupp/William Bradbury 1. Savior, like a shepherd lead us, Much we need Thy tender care; In Thy pleasant pastures feed us, For our use Thy folds prepare. Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus! Thou hast bought us, Thine we are. (2x) 2. We are Thine, Thou dost befriend us, Be the guardian of our way; Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us, Seek us when we go astray. Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus! Hear, O hear us when we pray. (2x) 3. Thou hast promised to receive us, Poor and sinful though we be; Thou hast mercy to relieve us, Grace to cleanse and power to free. Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus! Let us early turn to Thee. (2x) 4. Early let us seek Thy favor, Early let us do Thy will; Blesséd Lord and only Savior, With Thy love our bosoms fill. Blesséd Jesus, blesséd Jesus! Thou hast loved us, love us still. (2x) Thy Mercy, My God John Stocker/Sandra McCracken 1. Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song, The joy of my heart. and the boast of my tongue; Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last, Hath won my affections, and bound my soul fast. 3. Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolved by Thy goodness, I fall to the ground, And weep to the praise of the mercy I ve found. 2. Without Thy sweet mercy I could not live here; Sin would reduce me to utter despair; But, through Thy free goodness, my spirits revive, And He that first made me still keeps me alive. 4. Great Father of mercies, Thy goodness I own, And the covenant love of Thy crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit, Whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness mine. Whate er My God Ordains is Right Samuel Rodigast/David Braud 1. Whate er my God ordains is right, Holy His will abideth. I will be still whate er He does, And follow where He guideth. He is my God, though dark my road. He holds me that I shall not fall Wherefore to Him I leave it all. 3. Whate er my God ordains is right, Though now this cup in drinking May bitter seem to my faint heart, I take it all unshrinking. My God is true, each morn anew. Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart, And pain and sorrow shall depart. 2. Whate er my God ordains is right, He never will deceive me. He leads me by the proper path, I know He will not leave me. I take, content, what He hath sent. His hand can turn my griefs away, And patiently I wait His day. 4. Whate er my God ordains is right, Here shall my stand be taken. Though sorrow, need, or death be mine, Yet I am not forsaken. My Father s care is round me there. He holds me that I shall not fall, And so to Him I leave it all. 8

FINANCIAL UPDATE: Even though the financial condition of the church is sound, the officers of GCPC are concerned about the years-long downward trend in giving ( ), especially when coupled with the growth in our membership. 11 Morning Prayer: Our gracious heavenly Father: we thank You for how You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day. You are the Giver of every blessing we enjoy. Teach us to see every moment of this day as an opportunity to live for You and not ourselves. Help us to see trials and afflictions as opportunities for growth and deliverance from our greatest enemy our sinful flesh. Grow us in our delight and obedience of You as we seek to glorify You in all that we do. Purge from us selfishness, the fear of man, and the pride that seeks to keep us from trusting in You. May the cross of Jesus be our joy and boast as we begin this day, amen. Midday Prayer: Our wonderful and merciful Lord: as we stop to enjoy Your gracious provision of our daily bread, we commend our hearts and minds to You, asking that You would set them on what is truly honorable, virtuous, pure, lovely, and excellent. Let whatever anxieties and fears that may have surfaced this morning be answered by Your Spirit of comfort and truth who assures us that though the mountains sway and the valleys tremble, the rivers of sorrow will not overwhelm, for You are with us. Teach us the comfort of Your rod and staff as we are guided by Your loving Son, our Good Shepherd. In His name, we pray, amen. Evening Prayer: Our holy Father: we are thankful for everything You have provided this day. We are overwhelmed at the thought of Your goodness and kindness toward us. We humbly ask that whatever sinful thoughts, ungracious words or deeds, we have committed, You would grant us forgiveness for the sake of Your Son. Let our hearts be filled with the joy that comes from knowing You, the true God. You are our treasure and delight. Keep us as we close our eyes to rest, in Your holy name we pray, amen. 11
