G R A C E C O M M U N I T Y Presbyterian Church, PCA ORDER FOR THE WORSHIP OF GOD January 15, :30 AM Reflection: For God to be glorified means that His invisible character becomes visible to a watching world. What will make His character visible? When incompatible people welcome one another in Jesus Christ. Christopher Ash Prelude Welcome WORSHIP IN PRAISE Silent Preparation Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise Him all creatures here below, Praise Him above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Amen. Call to Worship...Isaiah 45 Minister: People: Minister: People: Thus says the LORD, who created the heavens, I am the LORD, and there is no other, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me. Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness; a word that shall not return: To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance. Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; to him shall come and be ashamed all who were incensed against him. In the LORD all the offspring of Israel shall be justified and shall glory. 1
Hymn of Invocation...O Worship the King (#2) Prayer of Adoration 2
Hymn of Preparation...My Sins, My Sins, My Savior! (#553) WORSHIP IN CONFESSION AND PARDON Call to Confession Prayer of Confession Words of Comfort and Promise...Romans 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 3
Hymn of Response...Not What My Hands Have Done (#461) 4
Confession of Faith...The Second Helvetic Confession of 1566* Ruling Elder Andrew Caudal Elder: People: Elder: People: Elder: People: What is repentance? By repentance we understand the change of the mind in a sinner stirred up by the preaching of the Gospel through the Holy Spirit, and received by a true faith: by which the sinner does acknowledge his natural corruption, and all his sins, seeing them convinced by the Word of God, and is heartily grieved for them; and does not only lament and freely confess them before God with shame, but also loathes and abhors them with indignation, thinking seriously of present correction, and of a continual care of righteousness and virtue, wherein to devote himself to holiness all the rest of his life. What is conversion? This is true conversion namely, a sincere turning unto God and to all goodness, and forsaking of the devil and all evil. Can we do these works ourselves? No, these are the gift of God, and not the work of our own strength as the Apostle says, God (must) grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. * The First Helvetic Confession of 1536 had been drawn up by Heinrich Bullinger, Martin Bucer, and Leo Jud for the German-speaking Swiss Cantons. It was an attempt to reconcile Lutheran and Zwinglian views before the spread of Calvinism. Thirty years later, commissioned by Friedrich III, Bullinger drew up a lengthier and more thoroughly Calvinistic confession. It became widely used among Swiss Reformed churches, as well as Reformed churches in Hungary, Poland, Scotland, and France. 5
WORSHIP AND THE MEANS OF GRACE The First Reading of God s Word...Zechariah 7:1-14 (pp ) The Second Reading of God s Word...Romans 14:1-12 (pp ) Reader: This is the Word of God. People: Amen! Prayer of Consecration We offer an optional Children s Church for children 4 years old through 1 st grade. If you choose to have your children participate, you may dismiss them for CC as we sing the hymn printed below. Please know we welcome and encourage your children to remain with you during the sermon. However, in CC they will be hearing from the same text that the sermon is based upon, so you may discuss the message as a family after church if you wish to do so. Hymn of Preparation...Amazing Grace (Verse 4) Hearing from God s Word... Romans 14:1-12 Rev. Kyle B. Oliphint Gospel Welcome 6
THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Please see instructions on the inside back cover of your bulletin Use the quotes below to help focus your heart and mind on this celebration: Failure to deal with the presence of sin can often be traced back to spiritual amnesia forgetting our new, true, real identity. As a believer, I am someone who has been delivered from the dominion of sin and who therefore is free and motivated to fight against the remnants of sin in my heart. You must know, rest in, think through, and act upon your new identity you are in Christ. Sinclair Ferguson Nothing should keep our minds busier on earth than this great reality: the Holy One of God was declared unholy, so that unholy sinners might stand unblemished before a holy God For Christians, the closest (and best) picture we have of Christ while pilgrims on earth is that in the elements of the bread and wine given to us in the Lord s Supper the elements we view by sight, but which are ultimately of no use unless received by faith. The joy of communing with our risen Savior in the sacrament does not come through pictures, but in the blessing of a faithfilled observance. Mark Jones We know God will answer us when we call because one terrible day he did not answer Jesus when he called... Jesus prayers were given the rejection that we sinners merit so that our prayers could have the reception that he merits. Tim Keller No doubt we will spend eternity enjoying an ever-increasing revelation of the things we do not yet know about God. Because he is infinitely good, the things that we do not know about God are only good things. The secret attributes of God, should we come to learn them, would bring us nothing but pleasure and assurance. The infinite unknown of God holds no faith-shattering duplicity, just a multiplicity of perfections waiting to be discovered across eternity. Jen Wilken We are in truth and totally sinners, with regard to ourselves and our first birth. Contrariwise, in so far as Christ has been given for us, we are holy and just totally. Hence from different aspects we are said to be just and sinners at one and the same time. Martin Luther Forgiveness isn t an end in itself. The point of forgiveness is to remove the barrier that stands between us and God so that He can give us His Spirit and bring us into His everlasting family. Darrell Bock 7
Communion Hymns Begone Unbelief John Newton/Kevin Twit 1. Begone unbelief, My Savior is near, And for my relief will surely appear: By faith let me wrestle, with God in the storm, and help me my Savior, the faith to adorn, and help me my Savior, the faith to adorn. 2. Though dark be my way, Since he is my guide, 'tis mine to obey, and His to provide; though cisterns be broken, and creatures all fail, the word he has spoken will surely prevail, the word he has spoken will surely prevail. Chorus: Begone unbelief, The Savior is here (3x) Though cisterns be broken and creatures all fail, the word he has spoken will surely prevail, the word he has spoken will surely prevail. 3. Why should I complain, of want or distress, temptation or pain? He told me no less the heirs of salvation, I know from his word, through much tribulation must follow their Lord, through much tribulation must follow their Lord. 4. Since all that I meet will work for my good, the bitter is sweet, the medicine food; though painful at present, will cease before long, and then, O! how glorious, the conqueror's song, and then, O! how glorious, the conqueror's song! Chorus Jesus, Lover of My Soul Charles Wesley/Greg Thompson 1. Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to Thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, Til life s storm is past; Safe into the haven guide; Receive my soul at last. 2. Other refuge have I none, I helpless, hang on Thee; Leave, oh leave me not alone, Support and comfort me. All my trust on Thee is stayed, All help from Thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head In the shadow of Thy wing. 3. Thou, O Christ, are all I want, Here more than all I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is Thy Name, I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am; Thou art full of truth and grace. 4. Plenteous grace with Thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; Make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art, Let me take of Thee; Spring Thou up within my heart; For all eternity. Bread of the World in Mercy Broken (#425) Reginald Heber/John S. B. Hodges 1. Bread of the world in mercy broken, Wine of the soul in mercy shed, By whom the words of life were spoken, And in whose death our sins are dead, 8 2. Look on the heart by sorrow broken, Look on the tears by sinners shed; And be thy feast to us the token That by thy grace our souls are fed,
WORSHIP IN GRATITUDE Offertory...Standing at the Portal Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts! Thou Fount of life, thou Light of men! From the best bliss that earth imparts We turn unfilled to thee again. Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; Thou savest those that on thee call; To them that seek thee thou art good; To them that find thee All in all. Closing Hymn... Jesus Is Lord Benediction 9
For 2017, we are providing a basic Family Worship plan to help our families to more regularly worship together during the week. In each weekly bulletin, we will provide a Daily Bible Reading plan, weekly questions from the Catechisms, a hymn for you to learn together, and prayers for you to use as a family. Weekly Hymn: Jesus Is Lord Shorter Catechism for Young Children Q108 "Of what are the Ten Commandments to you? / Answer: "They teach me what is pleasing to God, and how much I need a Savior. Shorter Catechism Q107 "What does the conclusion of the Lord s Prayer teach us? / Answer: "The conclusion of the Lord s Prayer (which is For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen ), teaches us to take our encouragement in prayer from God only, and in our prayers to praise him, ascribing kingdom power, and glory to him; and in the testimony of our desire and assurance to be heard, we say, Amen. Bible Reading: Mon 1/16 Genesis 17 & Matthew 16 Tue 1/17 Genesis 18 & Matthew 17 Wed 1/18 Genesis 19 & Matthew 18 Thurs 1/19 Genesis 20 & Matthew 19 Fri 1/20 Genesis 21 & Matthew 20 Sat 1/21 Genesis 22 & Matthew 21 Sun 1/22 Genesis 23 & Matthew 22 Next Week s Preaching Passage: Adult Sunday School: Budget Report Preaching: Rom. 14:
Morning Prayer: Our gracious heavenly Father: we thank You for how You have safely brought us to the beginning of this day. You are the Giver of every blessing we enjoy. Teach us to see every moment of this day as an opportunity to live for You and not ourselves. Help us to see trials and afflictions as opportunities for growth and deliverance from our greatest enemy our sinful flesh. Grow us in our delight and obedience of You as we seek to glorify You in all that we do. Purge from us selfishness, the fear of man, and the pride that seeks to keep us from trusting in You. May the cross of Jesus be our joy and boast as we begin this day, amen. Midday Prayer: Our wonderful and merciful Lord: as we stop to enjoy Your gracious provision of our daily bread, we commend our hearts and minds to You, asking that You would set them on what is truly honorable, virtuous, pure, lovely, and excellent. Let whatever anxieties and fears that may have surfaced this morning be answered by Your Spirit of comfort and truth who assures us that though the mountains sway and the valleys tremble, the rivers of sorrow will not overwhelm, for You are with us. Teach us the comfort of Your rod and staff as we are guided by Your loving Son, our Good Shepherd. In His name we pray, amen. Evening Prayer: Our holy Father: we are thankful for everything You have provided this day. We are overwhelmed at the thought of Your goodness and kindness toward us. We humbly ask that whatever sinful thoughts, ungracious words or deeds, we have committed, You would grant us forgiveness for the sake of Your Son. Let our hearts be filled with the joy that comes from knowing You, the true God. You are our treasure and delight. Keep us as we close our eyes to rest, in Your holy name we pray, amen. 11
