Simon got a new name after his profession of faith. As soon as he declared to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus renamed him with a title that means "rock." And with that name he gave Peter the mission to be a solid foundation upon which he would build his church. Not Peter's church. Not James or Paul's church. Not Martin Luther's or John Calvin's or anybody else's. This is Jesus' church, the church of Christ himself, that we call the Catholic Church. So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority in the church--"the keys to the kingdom of heaven"--to a human leader. Peter was thus established as the first pope. He exercised a special kind of headship, within the community of the apostles and the church at large, because Jesus gave him the power to do so, not because Peter claimed it for himself. And so too every pope since, right down to our Holy Father today, exercises this unique leadership within the Church. What a gift this is to us! Jesus knew well the human tendency to squabble and disagree, to argue and compete. He knew that the church would be prone to all of this because of her members, and that providing a final voice of authority, saying in effect that "the buck stops here" would be helpful for maintaining unity. As Catholics, even in spite of the differing opinions and perspectives that are manifest in the Church, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of identity and belief thanks in large part to the papacy. Today, may we give thanks for the pope and pray for him as he strives to lead all of us closer and closer to Christ. Why does it change? A: The pope picks his own name. Although all of the popes since the Middle Ages have done so, it is not required to change your name. The first pope to change his name was John II in 533. His given name was Mercury, the name of a pagan god and he felt that his was not an appropriate name for the head of the church and he changed it. The last pope to keep his given name as pope was Marcellus II in Pope John Paul I was the first to choose two names. Until the election of Pope Francis in 2013, the last pope to choose a new, unused name was Pope Lando in 913. When a pope chooses a new name, it might indicate his hopes for his reign, or tell us about his view of spirituality; it might also reflect continuity with a predecessor. In the early thirteenth century St. Francis of Assisi had a vision in which Jesus commanded him, "Repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin." In choosing St. Francis as his namesake, Pope Francis was pointing to a beloved saint who embraced radical simplicity, poverty, and care for the poor. As Pope Francis himself put it, "Oh, how I would like a church which is poor and for the poor!" A Prayer for our Earth By Pope Francis All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. Amen.

3 T W E N T Y - F I R S T S U N D A Y I N O R D I N A R Y T I M E Registration for the St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Religious Education & Confirmation Programs, for the Churches of St. Casimir and Immaculate Conception, is now open for the school year. Classes are for students in grades K-10 and will begin on September 24, 2017 at The Lyceum. If you have a child that is older and has not been Baptized, received their First Confession or First Communion or has missed some time in religious education classes, we are more than willing to help them catch up and receive these sacraments. CALLING ALL PIEROGI ANGELS There will be a Pierogi-Making Workshop on Sunday, September 10, 2017, beginning at 8:00 a.m., at The Lyceum, to prepare for our Parish Picnic. All interested members of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish are welcome to attend and spend a few hours making pierogi. No previous pierogi-making experience is necessary. More hands will help shorten the hours for the workshop which, in the past, has ended around 4:00 p.m. We are all looking forward to having a festive time at the St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Picnic. In preparation, the Rosary Society is asking all parishioners to consider donating items for the Kitchen Basket and Laundry Basket Raffles. Any items that are used in the kitchen or laundry rooms would be appreciated. You may drop your donation in the labeled boxes at the entrance of each church until September 10th; or drop off your donation at the Parish Center in Terryville or Thomaston. All are invited to attend our Parish Picnic on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Terryville Fairgrounds. We will begin the day with Mass at 11:00 a.m. under the pavilion. Following Mass, delicious Polish food, traditional picnic food and refreshing beverages will be available with the purchase of an all-you-can-eat wristband. Wristbands are priced per person at: Adult (16+) - $12; Children (6-15) - $5; ages 5 and under are free. The food booth will open directly after Mass and will serve pierogi, kielbasa sandwiches, fried dough, French fries, potato pancakes, hamburgers, hot dogs, and ice cream. From 12:30-4:30 p.m., attendees will be entertained with music, dancing and raffles, as well as free fun activities for the whole family including bingo and children's games. The picnic will be held rain or shine and is handicap accessible. Come and bring your whole family to enjoy an afternoon of faith, family, fellowship, and fun! St. Casimir s Rosary Society will hold their next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in Hall. Please note the change of date. According to Pope Francis, The annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvelous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation and his mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live.
