Message from the Shepherd. Dear Friends, On February 02, 2016 the Church officially concluded the Year of Consecrated Life. The celebration of Year of Consecration had been a source of grace for the entire Church. It has highlighted the role and commitment of priests and religious through a life of consecration. They enrich the Church by their life of holiness and ministry. In our diocese we had the diocesan level celebration, regional and parish level celebration, which were a great boost to vocation to priesthood and religious life. Let us not end our acceptance and appreciation of consecrated life with the conclusion of the year, instead let us continue to encourage and support all our consecrated persons showering greater respect and love to them and their ministry and life. We are in the Year of Mercy that was inaugurated on the 8 th of December In the last issued of Sharing I had written about the traditions of Holy Doors and its theological significance and how we shall celebrate the year of mercy in our diocese. Particularly I invite your attention to the opportunity given to us to gain plenary indulgence by undertaking pilgrimage to the Churches assigned in our diocese (Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, Kohima; St. Paul s Church, Wokha; St. Xavier s Church, Jalukie; St. Peter s Church, Kiphire and Holy Cross Church, Dimapur) through sacramental celebration of reconciliation and holy communion and praying for the intention of the Holy Father. In this holy year of mercy Pope Francis wants to encourage all the faithful to experience God s mercy and compassion and become channels of mercy to everyone around. The Pope writes, I am confident that the whole Church which is in such need of mercy, for we are sinners, will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God s mercy with which we are all called to give comfort to every man and every woman of our time. Thus we are encouraged to bring about a mercy revolution by living the seven corporal works of mercy (feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, bury the dead) and the seven spiritual works of mercy (admonish the sinner, instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, comfort the sorrowful, bear wrongs patiently, forgive all injuries, pray for the living and the dead). The corporal works of mercy focus on the physical needs of the less fortunate while the spiritual works of mercy are centred on the healing of spiritual and emotional life of the person. A Christian living for himself solely confined to the thoughts of his own comforts and security is a betrayal to his identity. Even those focused only on their spiritual accomplishments to further their name and securities are no different from the Pharisees. In the Jubilee Year of Mercy we need to contemplate on the Merciful Heart of our Father God whom Jesus came to reveal to us. When our hearts are opened to the experience of God, mercy fills our heart. Our every relationship now works by the rule of mercy. Name of God is the title of the book by Pope Francis. And mercy triumphs over judgment. For us in Nagaland this call of the Holy Father to experience God s mercy in our lives and to be merciful to others, or in other words to forgive and be reconciled to one another take particular importance since we are all searching for peace and collective solution to our problems. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy (Matthew 5:7) Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil Bishop of Kohima Sharing: February - March

Dear Readers, Sharing: February - March Editor s Note... The months of December and January are replete with celebrations of different kinds and intensity. We have yearly celebrations of Christmas and New Year. Added to that we have Jubilees, Conventions, Conferences, Sports Week, etc. All these celebrations and events add joy to our life, bring us together and enhance our faith. They are special occasions of God s infinite blessings and an occasion to glorify God and not glorify our own self. In few days time we will enter into a holy season of Lent. We Catholics begin Lent with Ash Wednesday. It covers a period of approximately six weeks before Easter Sunday. Traditionally the purpose of Lent is to prepare the believers through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement, and self-denial for the celebration of the great event of Easter. Lent is a time to give up things as well as take on new life-giving practices, helping us rid ourselves of distractions and our own selfish desires. By doing so, we seek to live and love as more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. The season of Lent is marked with important days: Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent, five Lenten Sundays, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), Good Friday and the Easter. Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and the commemoration of the triumphant entry of Christ into Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. On this day we also celebrate the first joy of the season, as we celebrate Our Lord s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem where He was welcomed by crowds worshiping him and laying down palm leaves before Him. Holy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, when he established the sacrament of Holy Communion prior to His arrest and crucifixion. It also commemorates His institution of the priesthood. Good Friday is the day on which we commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Catholics are joined by almost all other Christians in solemn commemoration on this day. An important devotion on this day is the Stations of the Cross, which commemorates Jesus Christ s last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. The Easter is the culmination of the Holy Season; Jesus, who was crucified, is risen! This event is the basis of our faith and our hope. If Christ were not raised, Christianity would lose its very meaning; the whole mission of the Church would lose its impulse, for this is the point from which it first set out and continues to set out ever anew. The message which Christians bring to the world is this: Jesus, Love incarnate, died on the cross for our sins, but God the Father raised Him and made Him the Lord of life and death. In Jesus, love has triumphed over hatred, mercy over sinfulness, goodness over evil, truth over falsehood, life over death. The three traditional pillars of Lenten observance are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Prayer: More time given to prayer during Lent should draw us closer to the Lord. Fasting: Fasting is one of the most ancient practices linked to Lent. Fasting is more than a means of developing self-control. It is often an aid to prayer, as the pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God. Fasting should be linked to our concern for those who are forced to fast by their poverty, those who suffer from the injustices of our economic and political structures, those who are in need for any reason. Abstaining from meat traditionally also linked us to the poor, who could seldom afford meat for their meals. It can do the same today if we remember the purpose of abstinence and embrace it as a spiritual link to those whose diets are sparse and simple. That should be the goal we set for ourselves a sparse and simple meal. Avoiding meat while eating lobster misses the whole point! Almsgiving: Almsgiving is a sign of our care for those in need and an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given to us. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral elements of the Christian way of life we began when we were baptized. May this Season of Lent and Easter bring immeasurable happiness and Joy in our life knowing that even when we feel like giving up, there is still hope for resurrection. God bless. Happy Easter!

People came from different places in the DRC with different intentions, some to thank God, some for a healing touch, some with broken heart, some childless couples...etc but we were all blessed in different ways and we were sure of one thing that God still loves us and God Loves you too. During our stay in the Families we were taken to so many places. What I observed and felt is that there is A lot of Love. I saw the unity, the love of families, especially by the love of neighbors. I was taken up and I believe that the root of all this is their daily routine of morning prayer, daily Holy Mass, Rosary in the families, reading the Word of God together, etc. Everyone was humble and they all started and ended their day with the blessing of God from a kid to a person of high qualification. This only shows the rootedness of faith of the Jesus Youth families. I realized that going for daily mass and the family coming together for prayers is a good practice to stay united. The final gathering was at St. Joseph Church, Nellimatom, Kerala and sessions were taken by our Jesus Youth leaders and elders. Many activities and topics were shared and we learned much and we are inspired. We felt the presence of the Holy Spirit throughout our journey. We thank and praise God and all the people who are praying for us. Dear readers, we should all come to Jesus without hesitating and give our service to the church or the society at large however small it may be, for its growth. We first come to Jesus and Jesus will lighten us. Secondly we all go to enlighten our families, neighbours and the society at large. God Bless You All. 9 NEWS - Diocese 9 THINGS YOU NEED TO BE FAMILIAR ABOUT LENT - Fr. Sojan Xavier 1. What is Lent? According to the Universal Norms for the Liturgical Year and the General Roman Calendar [pdf]: 27. Lent is ordered to preparing for the celebration of Easter, since the lenten liturgy prepares for celebration of the paschal mystery both catechumens, by the various stages of Christian initiation, and the faithful, who recall their own Baptism and do penance. 2. Where does the word Lent come from? The Catholic Encyclopedia notes: The Teutonic word Lent, which we employ to denote the forty days fast preceding Easter, originally meant no more than the spring season. Still it has been used from the Anglo-Saxon period to translate the more significant Latin term quadragesima (French carême, Italian quaresima, Spanish, cuaresma), meaning the forty days, or more literally the fortieth day. This in turn imitated the Greek name for Lent, tessarakoste (fortieth), a word formed on the analogy of Pentecost (pentekoste), which last was in use for the Jewish festival before New Testament times. 3. When does Lent begin and end? The Universal Norms state: 28. The forty days of lent run from Ash Wednesday up to but excluding the Mass of the Lord s Supper exclusive. This mean that Lent begins at 12:01 a.m. on Ash Wednesday and runs to just before the Mass of the Lord s Supper on the evening of Holy Thursday. As soon as the Mass of the Lord s Supper starts, it s a new liturgical season: Triduum. 4. Is Lent exactly forty days long as currently celebrated? No, it s actually a little longer than forty days. The number is approximate, for spiritual purposes. 5. Are the Sundays in Lent part of Lent? Yes. (See question 1 for the duration of Lent). It runs from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday. No exceptions are made for Sundays. The Sundays of this time of year are called the First, Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays of Lent. The Sixth Sunday, on which Holy Week begins, is called, Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. 6. Why is the number forty significant? Pope Benedict explains: Lent recalls the forty days of our Lord s fasting in the desert, which He undertook before entering into His public ministry. We read in the Gospel: Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry (Mt 4,1-2). Like Moses, who fasted before receiving the tablets of the Law (cf. Ex 34,28) and Elijah s fast before meeting the Lord on Mount Horeb (cf. 1 Kings19,8), Jesus, too, through prayer and fasting, prepared Himself for the mission that lay before Him, marked at the start by a serious battle with the tempter [Message for Lent 2009]. 7. What are the rules for fasting in Lent? Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. The law of fast binds those who are from 18 to 59 years old, unless they are excused for a sufficient reason (e.g., a medical condition that requires more frequent food, travelers, etc.). According to the Church s official rules (as opposed to someone s personal summary of them): The law of fasting allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food in the morning and evening, observing as far as quantity and quality are concerned approved local custom [Apostolic Constitution Paenitemini, Norms, III:2]. The system of mitigated fasting that is required by law thus allows for one full meal and some food in the morning and evening. The Church s official document governing the practice of fasting does not encourage scrupulous calculations about how much the two instances of some food add up to, though obviously each individually is less than a full meal, since only one of those is allowed. 8. What are the rules for abstinence in Lent? Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (as well as Good Friday). An exception is if a solemnity falls on a Friday, but no solemnities fall on Fridays in 2016, so all Fridays are days of abstinence. The law of abstinence binds those who are 14 years old or older. According to the Church s official rules: The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, the products of milk or condiments made of animal fat [Paenitemini, Norms III:1]. 9. Do you have to give up something for Lent? If you do, can you have it on Sundays? The traditional custom of giving up something for Lent is voluntary. Consequently, if you give something up, you set the parameters. If you choose to allow yourself to have it on Sundays as to promote joy on this holy day, that is up to you. Sharing: February - March

NEWS - Diocese anointed if the hands are not accessible or if there is another particular need. Finally, Holy Chrism is a mixture of olive oil and balsam, an aromatic resin. This oil is linked with the sanctification of individuals. In the Old Testament times, the priest, prophets and kings of the Jewish people were anointed. This oil is used in the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and holy orders, since they impart an indelible sacramental character. The blessing of the Holy Chrism is different from that of the other oils: Here the bishop breathes over the vessel of chrism, a gesture which symbolizes both the Holy Spirit coming down to consecrate this oil, and the life-giving, sanctifying nature of the sacraments for which it is used. (Recall how our Lord breathed on the Apostles on the night of Easter, saying, Receive the Holy Spirit (Jn 20:22).) The concelebrants at the Chrism Mass also extend their right hands toward the Chrism as the Bishop says the consecratory prayer, signifying that in union with their Bishop they share in the authority by which Christ Himself builds up and sanctifies and rules His Body, the Church (Vatican II, Decree on the Ministry and Life of Priests, No. 2). Regarding baptism, St. Hippolytus in the Apsotolic Tradition spoke of an anointing after the actual baptism with the oil of thanksgiving. Similarly, right after the actual baptism in the present rite, the priest anoints the person on the crown of the head with chrism, saying, God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has freed you from sin and given you a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit. He now anoints with the chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet and King, so may you live always as a member of His body, sharing everlasting life, Amen. In the sacrament of confirmation, the bishop anoints the forehead of the candidate with chrism saying, Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Sacred chrism is also used in the sacrament of holy orders. In the ordination rite of a priest, the bishop anoints with chrism the palms of each new priest. In the ordination rite of a bishop, the consecrating bishop anoints the head of the new bishop. Finally, Holy Chrism is used in the dedication ceremony of a church. Here the bishop anoints the altar, pouring Holy Chrism on the middle of the altar and on each of its four corners. It is recommended that the bishop anoint the entire altar. After anointing the altar, he anoints the walls of the church in 12 or four places marked by crosses. The three Holy oils remind us of the infinite love and mercy of the Lord who bestows it through the sacraments. The Eucharist began with the lighting of 50 lamps by 50 Catholic representatives signifying fifty years of Christian lives. The Apostolic blessing and message from Pope Francis was read out prior to the Eucharistic celebration. Mr Neituozo Dominic, Convenor of the Jubilee committee delivered the Jubilee Message. Bishop in his homily said that Jubilee is the time to express our gratitude to God who inspired and guided every step of the pioneers of this community who ventured out to accept and to live a faith that was not so familiar and welcome. Today we are grateful to them and are proud of them. Their sacrifices and dedication bore fruit and we are here today celebrating their courage and commitment to accept and live the Catholic faith, the faith that has come down to us from Jesus, through the Apostles and their successors. We are also grateful to the Salesian Congregation that nurtured the faith of the community. Jubilee is also a time to live the present with passion, to re-dedicate and renew our lives according to the principles of Jesus Christ. If we do so we can look forward to bright future with hope. Bishop reminded the community that in the catholic tradition churches are named not by tribe or group s name, but by saint s name indicating that all are welcome to the Church and it will build up a special relationship between patron saint and the community. We know saints are around the throne of God and are able to intercede for us who are living. This community of Rusoma has been under the very special protection and intercession of St. Stephen. We are inheritors of the faith for which St. Stephen gave his life. In his final speech before the judges in the Sanhedrin, Stephen bravely and eloquently defended his belief in Jesus as the promised Messiah, accused the Jews of unbelief, and explained that the sacrifices and sacrificial Laws given by Moses were temporary. When Stephen suddenly announced that he could see Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father, the infuriated Jews mobbed him, dragged him out of the city and stoned him to death. Obeying Jesus, Stephen prayed loudly for his executioners during the stoning and bore heroic witness to Jesus by his death. Stephen thus fulfilled literally the warning of Jesus, narrated in the gospel. Bishop concluded the homily by inviting the community to look to the past with gratitude, to live the present with passion and commitment and embrace the future with hope. 34 faithful received the sacrament of Confirmation and 55 received the first Holy Communion and the Jubilee Choir of Catholic Youth Association, Rosuma sang during the Holy Mass, Songs, skits, Tati

Peter Salew Sdb Chukitong Village on the Catholic Map Chukitong Village entered into the statistic record of the Catholic Church and of the diocese of Kohima on 27 th Dec. 2015, with the baptism and reception of thirteen members by Rev. Fr. Anto Tharakan SDB, the parish priest of St. Paul Church, Wokha. It was the day when the whole Catholic world was celebrating the Jubilee of the families on the Feast of the Holy Family. It was a very happy day for those thirteen who were waiting and preparing for almost two years for this day. Even though initially thirteen household had signed up, some went back to Baptist Church, others could not be present, yet others needed some more time to decide. It is Mr. Lamka who had the attitude of Joshua, I and my family will serve the Lord. (Joshua 15:20). He, together with his wife and his five children, are among those thirteen received the Baptism on that day. Mr. Lamka is given the name Peter since he is the leader of the little flock at Chukitong. Chukitong is a small township in Wokha district of Nagaland. It is about 20 Kms to the north of Wokha Town on the way to Mokokchung. People from different villages have come and settled down there. The initial contact began from January 2014 at the initiative of Mr. Ezanthung Shitiri, a convert to Catholic Church from that area in 2009, now living in Wokha Town. The then Chief Medical Officer of Wokha, Mr. Nchumbemo Ezung, permitted the community to use the old Public Health Centre (PHC) as the Church. On 20 th April (Easter Sunday) the first mass celebrated in the old PHC which was named St. Antony s Catholic Church, a name the people themselves suggested. Soon some came forward to help us with a table for altar, a few chairs, a bench, etc. Different persons and groups from time to time went there to support, encourage and catechize the community until they were received into the Catholic Church. - Fr. Anto SDB NEWS - Diocese Christmas Fiesta at Holy Cross Church, Dimapur and Cathedral Church, Kohima Bishop James Thoppil was the main celebrant for the vigil mass on 24 th night at Holy Cross Church, Dimapur and at the day mass at the Cathedral Church, Kohima on 25 th December. Bishop in his homily stressed the fact that God is a God of surprises. All the events narrated in the story of incarnation are stories of surprises announcement of the angel to Mary, Pregnancy of Mary, the acceptance of Mary by Joseph, the birth of the savior in a manger in the midst of animals, the good tiding proclaimed to the shepherds, the shining star and the wise men all are events of surprises. Jesus, in his ministry surprised many Mary and Joseph when they found him in the temple; the Pharisees and scribes when Jesus freely mingled with all kinds of people without paying attention to their status; when he healed sick people on the Sabbath; when he was found talking alone to a Samaritan woman at the well, etc. Therefore Christmas is a celebration of God s surprises. He comes into the world and lives among the people as an ordinary person, which is indeed unusual. It was unimaginable for the Jewish people who had set norms for the promised Messiah. He was expected to arrive as a mighty king to free the Jewish people from the slavery of the Romans. The mistake which the Jewish leaders and their scholars com-mitted was that they failed to recognize Jesus, the Messiah, when he came because he came in ways different from their expectations. Today the same mistake is committed by the followers of Jesus when they look for a God, a powerful hero, who works many miracles according to their expectation. The incarnation is also a daily event. 20 NEWS - Diocese day and every moment God comes to human beings in various ways. He comes in the form of children who are hungry, who are helpless, the sick who need care and compassion, women who are oppressed and exploited, strangers who come for help, the enemies who block our way of progress, etc. He comes also in the form of an honest government officer, a sincere friend who never betrays generous people who gladly spend their wealth for a noble cause, etc. Christmas asks us a tough question. Do we close the doors of our hearts to Jesus, who is looking for a place to be born in our lives, because he does not come according to our wish, plan and time? Bishop urged the faithful to examine themselves daily on the many ways we close the door to Jesus. The real meaning of Christmas actually is Emmanuel, God-withus God coming down to us; God seeking us out; God revealing Himself to us; God bringing us forgiveness, healing, comfort, moral strength, guidance; God dwelling within us. Each one of us has, deep down in our souls, an incredible hunger: a hunger for purpose and meaning; a hunger to feel and celebrate the redeeming, forgiving, sustaining love of God; a hunger to be in the presence of God. Christmas is special because it reminds us concretely that God is indeed with us. So let s go home to the heart of Christmas and embrace Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour. The midnight celebration at Holy Cross ended with placing the statue of Child Jesus in the crib with a solemn procession and prayer. NEWS - Diocese Monday s lecture was the first of a series that has been initiated by The Morung Express, a local newspaper. The Genographic Project, according to its website, uses cutting-edge genetic and computational technologies to analyze historical patterns from participants around the world to better understand our human genetic roots. Since it was first launched in 2005, the Genographic Project has recorded 7,42,652 participants from over 140 countries across the globe. At the very beginning of the lecture, co-chair person Aheli Moitra and Dr Abraham Lotha, later underscored that it was not an attempt to undermine the traditional Naga oral history but to provide a parallel understanding. According to Lotha, the motive behind the attempt was not to answer but to churn out more questions in the process. He asserted that the findings presented at the lecture were too simplistic to make a definite conclusion. A salient feature of the analysis, as presented by Dr Lotha, was how his DNA sample was broken down to identify genetic markers to trace his maternal as well as paternal ancestry separately. The maternal ancestry is traced through genetic markers found on mitochondrial DNA which is passed to a child only through the mother while the Y chromosome is examined to determine paternal ancestry. It will be interesting to find out how are we really (as a people)? Or whether it will negate or corroborate our oral history. 27 Mercy and Mission Go Hand-inhand, Pope Says Mercy and the Christian responsibility to be missionaries are closely connected, Pope Francis said Saturday, kicking off the first in a series of special audiences for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. As Christians, we have the responsibility to be missionaries of the Gospel, the Pope said during the Jan. 30 audience, which centered on the close link between mercy and mission. The pontiff explained how mercy received from the Father is not meant as a private consolation for us, but a tool whereby others can receive the same gift. There is a wonderful interplay between mercy and mission. Living mercy makes us missionaries of mercy, and being missionaries allows us to grow ever more in the mercy of God, he said. Therefore, we take our Christian lives seriously, and we should strive to be faithful, for only in this way can the Gospel can touch the hearts of people and open them to receive the grace of love, to receive this great mercy of God which welcomes everyone. Saturday s gathering in St. Peter s Square was the first in a monthly series of audiences for the Holy Year of Mercy. The Jubilee of Mercy is an Extraordinary Holy Year that officially commenced December 8 the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception with the opening of the Holy Door in St. Peter s Basilica. It will close Nov. 20, 2016 with the Solemnity of Christ the King. NEWS - Catholic World We go every day to the heart of the Holy Year of Mercy, and the Lord guides us through the Holy Door in order to be close to us, despite our failings and our contradictions, the Pope said. Let us never tire of feeling the need of His forgiveness, because when we are weak, his closeness makes us strong and enables us to live with greater joy our faith. Pope Francis quoted the words of his predecessor, St. John Paul II, saying that the Church lives an authentic life when she professes and proclaims mercy and when she brings people close to the sources of mercy. Speaking on the responsibility of Christians to be missionaries, the Pope said we tend to want to share the good things in our lives. When we receive good news, or when we live a good experience, it is natural that we feel the need to share it with others, he said. We feel within us that we can not hold back the joy that was given to us and we want to expand it. It is this very joy which drives us to communicate what we have received, and the same applies when we encounter the Lord, the pontiff said: the joy of this encounter, of his mercy, communicating the mercy of the Lord. In fact, the concrete sign that we have really met Jesus is the joy we feel when conveying this to others, he said. This sharing of what is received is not proselytizing, the Pope stressed. Rather, it is giving a gift: I give to you that which gives me joy. The Pope reflected on the Gospel account of Andrew immediately sharing his experience encountering Jesus with his brother Peter, and likewise Philip with Nathanael. Meeting Jesus equals to meeting with his love, the Pope said. This love transforms us and enables us to pass on to others the strength that it gives to us. - CNA/EWTN News, Jan 30, 2016 Sharing: February - March

NEWS - Catholic World Saints and Sinners: Pope Francis Distinguishes Between Sin and Corruption The saints were also sinners, Pope Francis emphasized during his homily at the Santa Marta residence chapel on Friday morning, in which he highlighted the difference between sin and corruption, saying that while everyone is a sinner, not everyone is corrupt. Corruption is a very easy sin for all of us who have some power, whether it be ecclesiastical, religious, economic, political because the devil makes us feel certain: I can do it, Pope Francis stated Jan. 29. However, the Holy Father noted that the difference between sin and corruption is forgiveness. While the corrupt think they have no need for God, regular sinners feel the need for forgiveness. Pope Francis used the reading from 2 Samuel 11 to further explain his point, which outlined the story of King David s own passage from sin to corruption. David is a saint, but also a sinner, the Holy Father explained. First, David lustfully sought a married woman, Bathsheba. After she became pregnant, David tried to cover up his sin of adultery from her husband Uriah. After many failed attempts, David sent Uriah to fight on the front lines of battle. By doing this, David secured his own safety through the certain death of Bathsheba s husband. It was because the kingdom was strong, Pope Francis noted, that David s lust led him down the corrupt path to murder, making him confident that he has the power, he has the strength. This puts David in a difficult position, but he says to himself I can do it, Pope Francis stated, saying that Sharing: February - March this was the moment where David begins taking the first step towards corruption. He condemns him to death. This man, this faithful man [Uriah] faithful to the law, faithful to his people, faithful to his king carries his own death sentence, Pope Francis continued. However, the courageous youth David was ultimately saved from corruption by the grace of God because he turned towards God s forgiveness. Pope Francis emphasized this turning point as the ultimate distinction between sin and corruption. Just like David, there are moments in everyone s lives where the attitude of sin ends and turns to corruption, Pope Francis explained. This spirit of corruption leads to the rejection of God and forgiveness. According to Pope Francis, one of the ugliest things about this stage is that corruption leads one to believe that he has no need for forgiveness. However, even if one sins regularly and still turns to God for mercy, he remains free from corruption. It is only when one believes they do not need God or forgiveness that they become corrupt. Today, let us offer a prayer for the Church, beginning with ourselves, the Pope said, praying, Lord, save us, save us from corruption. We are sinners, yes, O Lord, all of us, but let us never become corrupt. - CNA/EWTN News Jan 29, 2016 Pope Francis: It s Not Us, But God Who Takes the First Step On Sunday, Jan 31, 2016, Pope Francis said that it s the weak and vulnerable who are most valuable in God s eyes, and stressed that it s always him who takes the initiative in meeting us where we are. God meets the men and women of every time and place in the concrete situation in which they find

themselves. He also comes to encounter us, the Pope said Jan. 31, adding that it s always he who makes the first step. Francis explained that it is God who comes to visit us with his mercy, to lift us from the dust of our sins; he lends us a hand in rising from the abyss into which our pride has made us fall. He also invites us to welcome the consoling truth of the Gospel into our hearts and to walk along the path of goodness, the Pope said, noting that this isn t done through our own initiative, but God s, because it s always he who comes to look for us. Pope Francis directed his address to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter s Square for his Angelus address. Among them were a group of youth from Catholic Action in Rome, an organization dedicated to promoting and defending faith and family values inspired by the teachings of the Catholic Church. After passing through the Holy Door in St. Peter s Square as part of their annual Caravan of Peace, the children prayed the Angelus with the Pope before releasing balloons as a sign of their desire for a more peaceful, less indifferent world. In his reflections, Pope Francis focused on the day s Gospel passage from Luke, in which Jesus, after first amazing the inhabitants of his native town of Nazareth with his insightful preaching, is thrown out of the temple and threatened with death. Once Jesus read the passage of Scripture from the prophet Isaiah speaking of the future Messiah, he tells his listeners that today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. The Pope recalled that as soon as Jesus said this the people were amazed by his authority, but then begin to murmur, asking themselves is this not the son of Joseph? Jesus respond by saying that no prophet is accepted in his own native land. After recounting the passage, Francis said that it s not simply the story of a dispute among companions, as sometimes happens, caused by envy and jealousy. Instead, the passage points to a temptation that every religious person is exposed to and which frequently creates distance. This temptation consists of considering religion as a human investment and, as a consequence, seeking to bargain with God pursuing one s own interests, Francis said, emphasizing that all of us are exposed to it. NEWS - Catholic World Instead, religion means welcoming the revelation of God, who is Father and who takes care of each one of his creatures, even the smallest and most insignificant in the eyes of man, he said. This is precisely what the prophetic ministry of Jesus consists of: announcing that no human condition can constitute grounds for exclusion from the heart of the Father, and that the only privilege in the eyes of God is that of not being privileged, of being abandoned into his hands. Francis noted that when Jesus says today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing, his reference to today is something that applies to every person in every age. It also resounds for us in this square, reminding us of the relevance and the necessity of the salvation Jesus brings to humanity, he said, adding that God is always the one to act first. Pope Francis concluded his address by explaining that Mary was likely present in the temple on the day Jesus read the passage from Isaiah. By seeing Jesus admired by the people, then challenged by them and finally threatened with death, she had a small anticipation of what she would suffer beneath the Cross, he said, noting that she kept all these things in her heart, which was full of faith. He asked for her intercession in converting from adherence to a god of miracles to the miracle of God, which is Jesus Christ, and led pilgrims in reciting the traditional Marian prayer. -CNA/EWTN, Jan 31, 2016 Hundreds of Thousands Attend Family Day as Italy Debates Same- Sex Unions Rome, Italy, Jan 30, 2016 / 12:24 pm (CNA).- Rome s Circus Maximus was the site of a massive rally against a proposed law which would allow same-sex unions across the country of Italy. Hundreds of thousands are estimated to have gathered for Family Day at the historic site in the capital city a week ahead of a vote which could allow samesex couples to legally enter into civil unions. If passed, the legislation would grant same-sex couples - as well as non-married couples of the opposite sex - the same legal rights as married couples of the opposite sex. Among the legal allowances would be the adoption of a child by the same-sex partner of his or her parent. Sharing: February - March

NEWS - Catholic World To date, Italy offers no legal rights to same-sex couples. Italy is one of the few western countries that is still resisting this deviation, said Family Day organizer Massimo Gandolfini in an interview with Sky Tg24. Most European countries allow for legalized same-sex unions in some form. At a speech during the Family Day rally, Gandolfini told the crowds: Without limits, our society will go mad! the AP reports. Speakers addressed the throngs of crowds peacefully demonstrating with banners and signs, many of which called for the protection of a child s right to a mother and a father. The proposed bill to give legal rights to samesex partnerships was submitted to parliament Oct. 7, Italy s current prime minister, Matteo Renzi, has long expressed his intention to establish legal recognition of same-sex unions. Saturday s event comes nearly a decade after the 2007 Family Day contributed to the demise of another civil union bill under Romano Prodi s government. Archbishop Giancarlo Maria Bregantini of Campobasso-Boiano told CNA s Italian edition he came with members of his diocese. The message of the gathering is that a family, consisting of a man and a woman, is so deeply rooted in the Italian people, which has finally been awakened by a group of courageous lay persons, the archbishop said. These values do not have ideology, but they have the beauty of saying that every child needs a father and a mother. Archbishop Bregantini especially lauded the contributions made by the brave lay men and women to the movement. The demonstrations at Circus Maximus are indicative of a renewal in society, he added. I am very happy to see this reality of enthusiasm which means that Italy is awakening. Europe needs these things: trust in the future, in children, in tomorrow, he said. Earlier in the day, the Anonymous group s Italian branch hacked into the official website for Family Day 2016 to display a graphic, reading: Stop omophobia (homophobia): Love is Love. As of press time, the site was under maintenance. The Senate is expected to hold its final vote on the bill to grant legal status to same-sex couples in mid- February. - CAN, Jan 30, 2016 MAY THEIR SOUL REST IN PEACE Mr. Anthony, father of Sr. Pauline (Baghty) passed away on Sunday, 6 th December, Mr. Peter Sangthuama (74), father of Rev. 31 One Family s Unimaginable Suffering Paves the Way for a Teen s Sainthood The miraculous cure of a baby with brain damage through the intercession of Mexican martyr Blessed José Luis Sánchez del Río has been approved by the Vatican, completing the final step for the teen s path to sainthood. Pope Francis signed the decree Jan. 21, verifying the inexplicable recovery of a baby who doctors said had no hope of survival due to a myriad of health problems including brain damage caused by a stroke as a miracle attributed to Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio, a teenager who was martyred for his faith during the Cristero wars of the 1920s. Ximena Guadalupe Magallón Gálvez was just a few weeks old in September 2008 when her parents took her to Sahuayo in the Mexican state of Michoacán where Bl. José was born. During the visit, Ximena began running a fever that her regular doctor was unable to treat, her mother Paulina Gálvez Ávila said in a post on the Facebook page dedicated to Bl. José. Concerned that the fever was a sign of something more serious like pneumonia, the doctor sent her to have X-rays at Santa María Hospital in Sahuayo where doctors ruled out that disease, but were still unable to treat the fever. Her parents took Ximena to get a second opinion from Dr. Rosendo Sánchez in Aguascalientes State who had the child readmitted to the hospital, saying that she might be suffering from atypical pneumonia. We spent two months living that nightmare and (the doctors) didn t know what was going on since she wasn t responding to any treatments, Mrs. Gálvez said. They sought another opinion from Dr. Adán Macías who diagnosed her with pneumococcus, a NEWS - Catholic World bacterial infection that can cause several different lifethreatening illnesses including meningitis, severe pneumonia, and bloodstream infections. Ximena was transferred back to to Aguascalientes where Dr. Rosendo discovered that Ximena s right lung was filled with fluid. She would need to immediately undergo an operation which could be very risky on such a young child. Dr. Rosendo spoke with us and informed us that she would have to undergo a very delicate operation since she could bleed and die. We gave our consent and we told him to do whatever it takes to save little Ximena and that we were putting her in God s hands, Mrs. Gálvez said. Concerned about their young child s worsening health, the couple decided to have her baptized before the operation rather than waiting until she was older. The operation was successful, but upon examining lung tissue, doctors discovered that Ximena had been suffering from tuberculosis. When they told us it was in fact tuberculosis and they brought her to us in the room, she looked strange, just staring off with an empty look in her eyes. We talked to her but she didn t react. I told the doctor she looked bad, it wasn t my baby because she was always smiling before, the mother said. The baby underwent began intense treatment for tuberculosis, but her health took a turn for the worse when doctors informed the parents that baby Ximena had suffered from a stroke, causing 90 percent of her brain to be dead. Mrs. Gálvez asked to see her daughter. Before going into the room where the child was, one of the doctors warned her that my baby was already in a vegetative state and that appropriate procedures should be initiated. Dr. Rosendo arrived and crying I begged him to save my daughter. They put her into an induced coma and gave us 72 hours to see if she would live, since 90 percent of her brain was dead, she said. During those three days, Ximena s parents went to Mass everyday to ask God and Joselito to intercede for my baby, that they would work a miracle she said, using the affectionate nickname her family had for Bl. José Luis Sánchez del Río. Mrs. Gálvez said, I asked them to let me be with her and hug her, then they disconnected her. Sharing: February - March

NEWS - Catholic World At that moment I put my baby in God s hands and the intercession of Joselito and at that moment she opened her eyes and smiled. Ximena looked at the doctors and she started laughing with them. The doctors couldn t explain what had happened. Because they had done everything medically possible and that s when they said it s a miracle. The doctors took Ximena to do a CT scan and an encephalogram. They were surprised to see that 80 percent of her brain had recovered. When they examined her the next day, her brain had become completely healthy again. Even after such an inexplicable recovery, doctors told Ximena s parents that as a result of the temporary brain damage, she would never be able to eat or walk properly and that would most likely be blind and deaf and unable to speak due to the stroke. However, when her mother gave her a bottle of milk at the hospital, she drank eight ounces right away. The doctors were astonished. Contrary to all of the doctors predictions, Ximena completely recovered and is perfectly well thanks to God and the intercession of Joselito, Mrs. Gálvez said. We give endless thanks to Almighty God for this miracle and to Blessed Martyr José Sánchez del Río for his ample intercession. - CNA/EWTN News Jan 29, 2016 Millions Turn Out for Mass During Eucharistic Congress in the Philippines Massive crowds estimated in the millions took part in the Masses and liturgical processions of the eightday International Eucharistic Congress which recently concluded in the Philippines. We are called to understand, love and assimilate the very love of Jesus Our lives too must be offered in sacrifice, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin of Dublin said in his Jan. 29 homily. An estimated 1.5 million people attended a Mass and liturgical procession for the International Eucharistic Congress in the Philippines on Friday. The Mass was held on the grounds of the Cebu Provincial Capitol. Archbishop Martin said that the Church became present through the Eucharist. There is no Church without the Eucharist. The event aims to witness to the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and to promote a better understanding of the liturgy and the Eucharist in the life of the Church. The congress is now held every four years. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York was among the congress speakers. He spoke on the topic The Eucharist and Mary. He told Vatican Radio that the Eucharistic congress shows the power of other people. It s the power of seeing them trying their best to live their faith. And I think that s the genius of Catholicism: we re not in this alone. In contrast to American individualism, he said, the Catholic faith is both personal and something that is received and lived out together, in a community, with other people that we call the Church. 33 On Sunday at least 1 million more people attended the Statio Orbis Mass, the Stations of the World Mass that closes the Congress. The name of the Mass refers to the global nature of the gathering. Cardinal Charles Bo of Yangon was the closing Mass principal celebrant. The youth of the Philippines is the hope of the Church, the cardinal said in his homily. This nation will become light not only to Asia but to the whole world. He encouraged Filipinos to have many children, suggesting that Christianity is in a twilight in the West but the Philippines could be a new dawn. Multiply your children. Multiply your missionaries. Go to Europe and America, there they have more cats and dogs! The cardinal said that the destruction of the family is the greatest danger. He warned against countries whose laws have started on the path of destroying families. The future of the Church depends on Catholic families, he said Jan. 31. He said that young people are a blessing for the Church and that young people deserve understanding, not judgment from the Church. At the close of the Mass, Pope Francis addressed the event in a video message. He encouraged attendees to be missionary disciples and bring God s mercy to everyone. At each Eucharist, the table of the Lord s Supper, we should be inspired to follow his example, by reaching out to others, in a spirit of respect and openness, in order to share with them the gift we ourselves have received, the Pope said. 34 NEWS - Catholic - World There s No Alternative: Help Israel and Palestine Seek Peace, Archbishop Tells UN Peace was the focus of the Holy See s representative in a recent speech to the United Nations, where he renewed calls to support negotiations between Israel and Palestine and between the warring factions in Syria. Certain elements among both peoples have suffered too long from the misguided view that force will resolve their differences. Only sustained negotiations, entered into in good faith, will resolve their differences and bring peace to the peoples of Israel and Palestine, Archbishop Bernardito Auza, the apostolic nuncio heading the Holy See s permanent observer mission to the U.N., said Jan. 26. Speaking on behalf of the Holy See, he addressed the Security Council s open debate on the situation in the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, saying it has stalled. With the lack of substantive negotiations taking place, acts of violence continue to spiral, bringing many to doubt seriously the continued validity of the Oslo Accords, he said, referring to the 1993 agreement between Palestinian and Israeli leaders. Archbishop Auza said the Holy See believes the Israeli-Palestinian peace process can advance only if it is directly negotiated between the two parties, with strong international support. This certainly requires courageous decisions from both parties and demands fair mutual concessions. But there is no alternative, if both Israel and Palestine are to enjoy security, prosperity and peaceful coexistence, side by side with internationally recognized borders. The archbishop cited Pope Francis Jan. 11 remarks to the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See. There, the Pope voiced hope that the New Year can heal the deep wounds dividing Israelis and Sharing: February - March Palestinians, and enable the peaceful coexistence of two peoples who of this I am sure in the depth of their hearts ask only for peace. The nuncio commented: Acts of violence and inflammatory rhetoric must be set aside in favor of the voices of dialogue to give both peoples that peace for which their hearts long. The comprehensive agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine went into force Jan. 2. The agreement addresses the activity of the Church in Palestine, the archbishop explained. In the complex reality of the Middle East, where, in some countries, Christians have suffered persecution, the Holy See hopes that the agreement may serve as an example of dialogue and cooperation, in particular for other Arab and Muslim majority countries. Archbishop Auza also discussed the Syrian civil war, which has lasted almost five years. The fighting includes the Syrian government and various rebel factions, including the Free Syrian Army, Kurdish separatists, the Islamic State group, and al-nusra Front. Over 250,000 people have died in the conflict, with more than 11 million people displaced from their homes. The archbishop noted that the conflict had attracted violent actors from abroad. More than being a conflict between Syrians, foreign fighters coming from all over the globe continue to commit unspeakable acts of horror against the civilian population in Syria and in parts of Iraq, he said. The influence of these foreign elements has led to sectarian violence and persecutions of religious and ethnic minorities. According to Archbishop Auza, Pope Francis is convinced that only common and agreed political action can stem the spread of extremism and fundamentalism that spawn terrorist acts in Syria, Libya, and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Rather than repeating the horrendous acts of violence against the Syrian people, the archbishop repeated an appeal to stop the flow of arms into the region. He urged strengthened humanitarian action to help refugees. He said refugee aid should help them remain in or near their home country, providing adequate food, medical supplies, water, electricity, and access to education. Archbishop Auza said his delegation backed Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for the

NEWS - Catholic - World sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and for a political settlement to the Syrian conflict. The archbishop praised the Syrian peace talks that have now begun in Geneva. In spite of the many strong differences still to be found among the parties to the talks, the Holy See believes that these negotiations are the best chance the International Community has to bring a stable and lasting peace to Syria and to the region, he said. He also noted the upcoming humanitarian conference to be held in London Feb. 4. He said the Holy See hopes the conference will ease the suffering of people in the region and contribute to settling the Syrian conflict. - CNA/EWTN News New Feb 2, 2016 Mass in Sign Language? Over 20 Spanish Priests Celebrate it Every Week In the Catholic Church, the spoken language is central to the liturgy: we recite the Nicene Creed as one, we praise the Lord with the Gloria that we sing, and we bow our heads to hear the blessing we receive at the end of Mass. But there s a different reality for hearing impaired and deaf Catholics around the world. Father Sergio Buiza, the national director of the Spanish Conference of Catholic Bishops Deaf Ministry, said their goal is to bring the Gospel to the maximum number of people, including, of course, the deaf and hearing impaired, Europa news reported. Fr. Buiza is just one of several priests who celebrates Mass in sign language at one of many Catholic churches in Spain. He celebrates a sign language Mass at the Santiago Cathedral in Bilboa, Spain each week. There are around a million people in Spain affected by different levels of hearing loss. Some 1,250 of them attend Mass in sign language every week at one of the 24 churches where they are held. In the parishes where this pastoral care is provided, all types of services are offered: from Mass to catechesis, Bible study groups, wedding celebrations, and confessions. However, Fr. Buiza explained, the biggest issue is that there is just one parish for the deaf per diocese, forcing those with hearing impairments to travel long distances each week. There are elderly people that come from a long way. In my diocese we celebrate the Eucharist in the cathedral every Saturday afternoon and they come from different towns by train and bus, the priest from Bilbao said. Last December, the Spanish Catholic Bishops Conference announced a new initiative in collaboration with the ONCE Foundation to help the hearing impaired by installing magnetic induction loops, or hearing loops, in at least 12 churches across Spain. Hearing loops are sound systems that transform the audio in a magnetic field that is picked up by hearing aids and Cochlear Implant processors. This will allow at least those with such devices to participate more fully in the Mass, but would not be of use to those who are fully deaf. The Church in Spain has been working with the deaf for more than 50 years and has been doing so in a more coordinated fashion since the 1990s, when Deaf Ministry became part of the Bishops Conference. In Spain, some 173 people are dedicated to the pastoral care of the deaf, many of whom are deaf or hearing impaired themselves. This includes 140 laypeople and 21 priests. - CNA Jan 31, 2016 Pope Calls for Concrete Acts of Mercy this Lent Pope Francis, In his 2016 Lenten message, Pope Francis called the faithful to place special emphasis on the spiritual and corporal works of mercy this Lent, taking into account the current Jubilee Year of Mercy. God s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn, the Pope wrote in the short document, released Tuesday by the Vatican. Sharing: February - March

The spiritual and corporal works of mercy, the pontiff said, remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbours in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them. On such things will we be judged, he said. The title of this year s message was drawn from the Gospel of Matthew: I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, and has the subtitle: The works of mercy on the road of the Jubilee. In the message, signed the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Oct , the Pope said those who are truly poor are the ones who believe themselves to be rich. This is because they are slaves to sin, which leads them to use wealth and power not for the service of God and others, but to stifle within their hearts the profound sense that they too are only poor beggars, he said. The greater their power and wealth, the more this blindness and deception can grow, he said. Pope Francis recounted the parable of the poor man Lazarus who would beg at the door of the rich man. Lazarus represents Christ, the Pope said, and therefore the possibility of conversion which God offers us and which we may well fail to see. This blindness is often accompanied by the proud illusion of our own omnipotence, he observed. Such an illusion can take social and political forms, he explained, citing as examples the totalitarian systems of the twentieth century. In modern times, this illusion is seen in the ideologies of monopolizing thought and technoscience, which would make God irrelevant and reduce man to raw material to be exploited. The Pope went on to explain how the illusion can link back to the idolatry of money, leading to a lack of concern for the poor on the part of wealthier individuals and societies. They close their doors, refusing even to see the poor, he said. For all of us, then, the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year is a favourable time to overcome our Sharing: February - March NEWS - Catholic - World existential alienation by listening to God s word and by practising the works of mercy. Pope Francis stressed that the corporal and spiritual works of mercy must never be separated. By touching the flesh of the crucified Jesus in the suffering, sinners can receive the gift of realizing that they too are poor and in need, he said. This love alone is the answer to that yearning for infinite happiness and love that we think we can satisfy with the idols of knowledge, power and riches. The Pope warned against constantly refusing to open the doors of their hearts to Christ who knocks on them in the poor, as such consistent refusal on the part on the part of the proud, rich and powerful leads to condemnation. This year s Lent will begin Feb 10 with Ash Wednesday, when the Church will send out Missionaries of Mercy priests with the faculties to pardon sins in cases otherwise reserved for the Holy See as part of the Jubilee Year. In the opening section of the message, Pope Francis centered his reflection on Mary as the image of the Church s evangelization, because she is evangelized. The Pope began by reiterating the call for mercy to be celebrated and experienced in a particular way this Lent, citing the Bull of Indiction for the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The mercy of God is a proclamation made to the world, a proclamation which each Christian is called to experience at first hand, he said. After receiving the Good News from the angel Gabriel, Mary proclaims the Magnificat in which she prophetically sings of the mercy whereby God chose her, the Pope recounts. He describes Mary as the perfect icon of the Church which evangelizes, for she was, and continues to be, evangelized by the Holy Spirit, who made her virginal womb fruitful. Pope Francis then reflected on the history of mercy as seen in the covenant between God and the people of Israel. God shows himself ever rich in mercy, ever ready to treat his people with deep tenderness and compassion, especially at those tragic moments when infidelity ruptures the bond of the covenant, which then needs to be ratified more firmly in justice and truth, he said. Here is a true love story, in which God plays the role of the betrayed father and husband, while Israel plays the unfaithful child and bride. This love story culminates in the incarnation of God s Son, who the Father has made mercy incarnate, the Pope said, citing the Jubilee Bull of Induction.

NEWS - Catholic - World As the Son of God, he is the Bridegroom who does everything to win over the love of his bride, to whom he is bound by an unconditional love which becomes visible in the eternal wedding feast. Pope Francis reflected how it is through mercy that God restores his relationship with the sinner. In Jesus crucified, God shows his desire to draw near to sinners, however far they may have strayed from him. In this way he hopes to soften the hardened heart of his Bride. Pope Francis concluded the message by calling on Mary s intercession during the upcoming Season of Lent. Let us not waste this season of Lent, so favourable a time for conversion! - CNA/EWTN News, Jan 26, 2016 Religious Liberty at Center of Pope s Meeting with Iranian President On Tuesday 26 th January, Pope Francis met with Iranian president Hassan Rouhani for the first time, an encounter that focused heavily on human rights, religious freedom, and an end to the spread of terrorism. Originally scheduled to take place in November, Rouhani s visit was canceled at the last minute due to the Nov. 13, 2015, attacks in Paris. It also follows the lifting of international sanctions against the country after a long-anticipated nuclear agreement was reached in July. The Jan. 26 meeting between Francis the Iranian president took place in the Vatican s Apostolic Palace, and lasted 40 minutes. Rouhani was accompanied by a delegation of 12 persons, all of whom were men save an Iranian woman who served as one of two interpreters assisting during the encounter. Rouhani spoke in Farsi, while Pope Francis spoke in Italian. A Vatican communique described the meeting between Francis and Rouhani as cordial, and centered largely on relations between the Holy See and Iran, the life of the Church in the country, and the actions of the Holy See in promoting the dignity of the human person and religious freedom. Though no mention was explicitly made of Iran s role in the Syrian and Iraq conflicts, the topic was likely a key point of discussion, as well as the condition of Christians across the Middle East. However, the Vatican communique did note that Iran s important role in the region in promoting suitable political solutions to the problems afflicting the Middle East, to counter the spread of terrorism and arms trafficking was spoken about, as well that of other countries. In this respect, the parties highlighted the importance of interreligious dialogue and the responsibility of religious communities in promoting reconciliation, tolerance and peace, the communique said. Discussion also touched on the conclusion and application of the recently-agreed to Nuclear Accord. After months of negotiation representatives of the United States, Iran, and other nations met in Vienna in July, reaching a long-awaited deal aimed at limiting Iran s nuclear activity in exchange for the lifting of international economic sanctions. Nuclear-related sanctions on Iran were lifted on the condition that country abides by the framework set, however, sanctions related to terrorism, human rights abuses and ballistic missiles remain. Rouhani s meeting with Pope Francis is part of a larger European tour that will also take him to Paris, and marks the first time an Iranian president or head of government has visited Europe since As is customary during papal encounters with heads of state, both Francis and Rouhani exchanged gifts once their conversation was over. Pope Francis gifted the Iranian president a large medal of St. Martin cutting off part of his cloak to give to a poor man, telling him, it s a sign of brotherhood. The Pope also gave Rouhani copies of his 2015 encyclical on the care for our common home, Laudato si. Since it hasn t yet been translated into Farsi, Francis gave the president copies in both Arabic and English. For his part the Iranian president gave Francis a large tapestry, which he explained was made by hand in the holy city of Qom, which sits just southwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran. He also gave the Pope a large book with colorful illustrations. As the two were headed to the door, Francis thanked Rouhani for the visit, and said that I hope for peace. In turn, the Iranian president asked the Pope for prayers. After speaking with the Pope, Rouhani subsequently met with the Vatican s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, as well as the Secretary of Relations with the States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher. - CNA/EWTN News, Jan 26, 2016 Sharing: February - March
