2 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME August 18, 2013 From Msgr. Figliozzi Scriptural Reflection for the Week let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. (see Hebrews 12:1-4) What are your eyes fixed on? Are they fixed on Christ or everything on television and the internet that blinds you to Christ? The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews is very practical and realistic. He knows that the Christian life is a difficult struggle at times between that which is bad for us and that which is good. He knows we need to persevere in avoiding sin and he presents a way for us to think more of goodness than to wallow in sinfulness. He suggests we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Do we have pictures of Christ near your television or computer? Do you carry a Rosary with you to hold onto during times of temptation? Do you keep a Bible nearby for a word of encouragement when you need it? Do you get to confession with regularity so you think more of Christ and His Mercy? This is what it means to persevere in running the race! Mass Time Change come September 8th Beginning Sunday, September 8th, the 11:30am Mass will move to 12:30pm. The other two weekend Masses on Saturday at 4pm and Sunday at 8:30am remain the same. As you know, we now share our buildings (church and rectory) with the Syro Malankara Catholic Community of St. John Chrysostom. For the past two years, they have had their liturgy in the church at 1pm on Sundays. Beginning Sept. 8th they will have their liturgy at 10am, necessitating the change of our Mass Time from 11:30am to 12:30pm. As a result of this change, Mass in Italian will no longer be offered at St. Vincent s (at present there are people who attend this Mass). Those wishing to attend Mass in Italian are invited to St. Catherine s the last Saturday of every month (from September to June) in the Sienna Center. I thank everyone for your understanding and cooperation. Last Week s Collection Parish: $4, Thank you for your support. One Final Thought Unless you become like a little child you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. And what is being a little child? It is having a clean heart, a pure heart, a heart that holds Jesus, a heart that can say again and again, Jesus in my heart, I believe in your tender love for me. I love you. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Stewardship.. 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time Reflection In today s second reading, St. Paul encourages us not to grow weary or lose heart, but to persevere in following Jesus. Our willingness to give of ourselves, even in the face of conflict and division, is one way to measure our discipleship. Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish whose faithfulness is evident, despite uncertain times and certain hardships, to provide continued service to their neighbor in need.

5 WHAT IS LITURGY? Part IV By Rev. Johnny R. Mendonca The Paschal Mystery is not confined to Easter alone. We celebrate, we remember, we believe as we participate in liturgy all year. The liturgical year forms one unfolding celebration of this Mystery of our life and identity in Christ. (Somehow the blocks of "Ordinary Time" which form a separate and discontinuous cycle in between the Christmas and Easter/Pentecost Mysteries in our present liturgical year seem inelegant and un-synthetic in this light.) The full meaning of the Christian Passover is therefore incorporation into the Trinitarian Life. In Christ, incarnate, crucified, risen and glorified, we have been adopted into the Godhead, and we are called to become "co-sharers of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1.4). We are in a certain real sense already "divinized" by being filled with the Holy Spirit through the sacramental life. This is also why everything in our liturgy is marked by the invocation of the name of the Blessed Trinity. This sacramental, paschal, Trinitarian liturgy of the Church is therefore more than mere expressive drama. It is the living out, as well as the acting out, of our relationship with Christ to the Father and of our mutual relationships and vocations to one another in His Holy Spirit. It is the administering and celebration throughout time and space of The Great Mystery. And the word "mystery" for a Catholic does not mean something thin and distant, but rather signifies the Reality of realities. It is we who are as yet incomplete, not fully "realized". It is precisely in our approaching and being adopted into the Divine Nature that we are saved from everlasting futility. Liturgy is our participation already in this earthly and temporal existence through sacramental signs, in the mysterious life of the Trinity. The source of power and effectiveness in the sacraments is the Holy Spirit of God who unites heaven and earth in one communion of love. The Holy Spirit animating and empowering the actions of the Church on earth applies throughout history the fruits of Christ's victory already fully experienced by the blessed in heaven. This is the basis of the liturgical life of the Church, which is the true New Testament worship in Spirit and in Truth. So the New Covenant is not just a personal response to the message of salvation, it is an objective relationship of grace ministered to us by Christ through his Body which is the Church. The Church is the sacrament of the Incarnation - the vehicle of the continuing work of Christ in the Spirit. The sacramental economy of the New Testament invites, requires and enables us to respond to God with personal faith and love, but does not simply consist in the shared enthusiasm of believers. The primary purpose of the Church's liturgical worship is not to express our feelings towards God, but to express and impress the Personality of Christ upon us.... 6 Surrogate Mothers, 3 Parents and No Rights for Children Dark Side of the IVF Industry Rome, August 12, 2013 (Zenit.org) Father John Flynn, LC England s Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority is conducting a review of the laws governing surrogacy, according to an Aug. 5 report by the Web site BioNews. The news comes at a time when in recent months a number of concerns have been expressed about the use of surrogate mothers and the introduction of third parties into the conception of children. On Aug. 1, Catholic World Report published a lengthy article by Sister Renée Mirkes titled The Injustices of the Surrogacy Industry. According to Sister Mirkes some 5,238 babies were born in the United States between as a result of surrogacy. The Catholic Church, she explained, has long insisted on the right of a child to be conceived and brought up within marriage. The article noted that studies have shown that surrogate children are at a greater psychological risk than their non-surrogate counterparts. There are also considerable health risks for the surrogate mother, due to practices such as superovulation, hormone treatments, and the implantation of multiple embryos. The risks for mothers was exemplified in a July 29 article published by BioNews regarding Indian surrogate mothers. A survey of 150 surrogate mothers conducted by the Centre for Social Research (CSR) in New Delhi found that the surrogates were only paid 1%-2% of the fee that the commissioning parents pay. The rest of the fee is kept by the agents who arrange the surrogacy. Twiblings The study also found that the surrogate mothers were not properly informed about the contract they were entering into. Moreover, in cases where the commissioning parents do not wish to continue with the pregnancy, due to abnormalities or the sex of the child, an abortion was often performed without consulting the surrogate mother. This is sometimes associated with what the CSR termed twibling, that is, using more than one surrogate mother at a time for the same commissioning parents to increase success rates. If there is a surplus baby then he or she is simply aborted. According to the CSR the surrogacy industry in India generates hundreds of millions of dollars a year in revenue, yet it remains largely unregulated. The problems regarding IVF are not limited to surrogate mothers. Recently news came from England about babies being conceived with the participation of three parents. It involves parents where the mother has defects in the mitochondria, a structure located in the cell's cytoplasm outside the nucleus. The DNA from the mother is placed in the ova of a donor with healthy mitochondria and fertilized with the sperm of the father. The mitochondria contributes some DNA, so the resulting child will have DNA from three parents. The child will have more than 20,000 genes from their parents and 37 mitochondrial genes from a donor, according to a June 27 report by the BBC. "It is a disaster that the decision to cross the line that will eventually lead to a eugenic designer baby market should be taken on the basis of an utterly biased and inadequate consultation, commented Dr. David King, the director of Human Genetics Alert, to the BBC. Margaret Somerville, director of the McGill Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law in Canada, also criticized the proposed procedure in a July 17 article published by the Ottawa Citizen newspaper. Replacing the DNA located in the mitochondria, she explained, means that all the descendants of the embryo will receive the alteration. Not only are the long-term effects of interfering with the structures of DNA unknown, but the idea of building better babies opens up the door to eugenics and propagates the mentality that we are nothing more than a product of our DNA, she argued. New class of people On the subject of the babies resulting from sperm or ova donation, on Aug. 2 Alana S. Newman, the founder of the Anonymous Us Project, published an article on the Public Discourse Web site titled: What Are the Rights of Donor-Conceived People? The organization describes itself as a safety zone for real and honest opinions about reproductive technologies and family fragmentation. In her essay Newman denounced the fact that we have created a new class of people who are not given the same rights as other people. Slavery has been abolished and society no longer accepts that you can own people, she commented. As well, we know that human beings deeply desire connection with their biological parents and siblings. If we recognize that it s wrong to displace human beings as if they were products, not people, then we should also see that a concept like donor-conception is wrong in principle, she argued. Human babies are not things; their mothers are not ovens, commented Kathleen Parker in an opinion article for the Washington Post on May 25. Titled Surrogacy Exposed, Parker argued that: By turning the miracle of life into a profit-driven, state-regulated industry, the stork begins to resemble a vulture.
