1 March 2019 March Newsletter Church of the Good Shepherd The Crucified Life - An Invitation to a Holy Lent Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare them for a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by selfexamination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God s holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our Maker and Redeemer. (BCP ) This Lent you are invited to take a journey into the heart of The Crucified Life. Jesus challenges those of us who would come after Him to pick up our cross and follow Him. The 40-day period of Lent begins with the service of Ash Wednesday where we acknowledge our mortal nature and concludes with the resurrection and new life of Easter Sunday. Each week of the Lenten season we will reflect deeply on one of Jesus seven last words from the cross; traditionally understood as Forgiveness, Salvation, Relationship, Distress, Abandonment, Reunion, and Triumph. Please be sure to pick up your Lenten Devotional and Study Guide, and join us for The Crucified Life, Sunday mornings at 9:30. My prayer is that you and I will walk daily toward the cross with humility and purpose. I look forward to seeing how God will use this offering of ourselves to Him. LENT Then he said to them all: Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. ~ Luke 9:23-24 Yours in Christ, Visit our website at

2 The good shepherd FROM THE ASSOCIATE RECTOR To Lent, and Beyond ASH WEDNESDAY The purpose of Lent is to prepare our hearts for Easter. We might give up something indulgent, or take on a new project of loving service, or work on our prayer life all edifying, worthwhile practices. But we shouldn t lose sight of the goal: to be ready for Easter. This year, you re invited to do your Easter preparation with all your co-disciples in the Good Shepherd community. All together, youngest to oldest, we ll engage in a powerful study called The Crucified Life. This will offer something for everyone. It will help us all go deeper into the meaning of Jesus complete self-giving on the cross. It will help us understand how Jesus act changes our lives and our world. We encourage you and your family to be part of this time of deep reflection. But don t stop there. The very best thing about The Crucified Life is that it leads to The Resurrected Life, our parish theme for the Great Fifty Days of the Easter season. In Lent, we are honest about the darkness in our world, and in our hearts. It s important to be just as honest, just as bold, in proclaiming the Easter message: Jesus Christ defeats darkness, in his life, in our lives, and in the world. Be part of the journey, the whole thing: Lent and Easter, The Crucified Life, and The Resurrected Life, darkness and light, sin and redemption, and rediscover the very essence of our faith. Together, let s journey to Lent, and beyond. Philip+ Lent Begins Wednesday, March 6 Imposition of Ashes & Holy Eucharist 7:00 a.m. 8:10 a.m. 12:15 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Collect for Ash Wednesday Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.! 2 cotgs@cotgs.org

4 The good shepherd ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL Adult Sunday School The Christian Life Series: Lent - The Crucified Life Led by Rev. Milton Black and Rev. Philip May 9:30 a.m. in Munds Hall Auditorium This class is specially designed to lead us through our theme for 2019, The Christian Life. During Lent we will focus on The Crucified Life. We will explore Jesus final seven words from the cross: forgiveness, salvation, relationship, distress, abandonment, reunion, and triumph. As we consider His words, we understand and identify with His suffering in a way that challenges us, transforms us, and ultimately brings us hope. You will have the opportunity to hear indepth Biblical teaching and openly discuss the teaching in groups on Sundays in Sunday School. Rev. Milton Black and Rev. Philip May will lead us in Munds Hall and facilitate small group discussion. Will Our Children Have Faith? Led by Rev. William Campbell 9:30 a.m. in Dobbins Hall Adult Classroom! The Rev. William Campbell would like to personally invite you to join other parents as we engage The Christian Life by exploring how we talk about what we believe within our homes and with our children. In March, the focus of the class will shift to parallel the Lenten materials we will cover as an entire church with The Crucified Life. In this way, we will continue to discuss the ways we bridge the divisions in understandings between how adults and children experience, understand, and live into faithful lives. The class will continue through Easter with The Resurrected Life (through Pentecost--June 9) and pick up again in the Fall with The Spirit Filled Life. Episcopal 101: Foundations for Mature Faith (Adult Confirmation Class) Led by Rev. Frank Fuller 9:30 a.m. in the Parlor This class is especially designed for those who want basic Christian education on the foundations of the Episcopal Church and adults who would like to be either confirmed or received in the Church. We are excited to have the Rev. Frank Fuller lead this important course. You will learn more about our faith as Episcopalians, the Episcopal tradition, and expectations of membership at Good Shepherd. Topics will include: Worship (Sacraments & Eucharist) Doctrine (The Bible, Jesus, and the Creeds) Discipleship (Baptism, Grace, and Prayer) Ministry & Mission (Church History, the Episcopal Church, Good Shepherd's Ministry, Your Ministry) Wednesday Evenings Our Wednesday Evening Class will take a break during Lent. Everyone is encouraged to join our Wednesday Lenten Programs! Wednesdays After Lent: Encountering the Risen Jesus Led by the Rev. Philip May and Youth Minister, Matthew Bloss 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Parlor (Begins Wednesday, April 24) After Lent, Fr. Philip and Matthew will continue the Wednesday evening classes after Lent with an Easter Season class called Encountering the Risen Jesus. The post-resurrection encounters between Jesus and the disciples provide us with some of the most profound and personal moments to be found in all of Scripture. The risen Christ comes to his disciples in all their brokenness - their sadness, fear, doubt, shattered dreams and failure - and calls them to a future filled with hope, confidence, confirmed faith, new beginnings and restored lives.! 4 cotgs@cotgs.org

5 March 2019 MISSION & OUTREACH Mission & Outreach Salvation Army Mobile Canteen Monday, March 25 5:30 p.m. Munds Hall Auditorium The Salvation Army Mobile Canteen is a vital outreach to the homeless in our community. Come join us in preparing meals and delivering them on the streets of Corpus Christi. We need help with donating food items, as well as preparing and delivering dinner. Please call the Church Office if you have any questions at Eggs Needed! The Egg Ladies continue to need our help. They need eggs that are blown out. Make a small hole in one end and a slightly larger hole on the other and blow the contents of the egg into a bowl. A needle or other sharp pointed objects works well for making the holes. Please rinse out the eggs and bring them to the Church Office. Wheelchair Ramp Ministry Next Ramp Build: Saturday, March 16 8:00 a.m. Location to be announced. The Episcopal Ministries of Corpus Christi join together each month to build wheelchair ramps for families in need in our community. Contact Doug Wayland if you are interested in helping at Volunteers are Vital to our Success! The Corner would like to give a special thank you to their wonderful volunteers! Corner volunteers are like a family. They help with various tasks at the Corner: merchandising, selling, marketing, bookkeeping, and much more! The following are some of our faithful volunteers: Janet Allen Mary Beecroft Robert Browning Pauline Campbell Barbara Collins Lorraine Dawson Bob Davis Rena Davis Caryl Devlin Cornelia Gates Fran Hall Kathy Hooper Loyal Howe Esther Jones Gay Keeble BJ Kershaw Carol Kirkland Jose Leal Kathy Lorenz Patty Madro Mike Mason Bobbye Mitchell Mary Reinhart Kezia Ruiz Leah Robertson Bruce Robertson Mary Sterett Marge Strand Sue Swain Debi Welch Come be part of our Volunteer Family! The Corner is always looking for more volunteers. Ruth Welch was the first Corner volunteer many years ago. Let s keep the tradition that was begun by Ruth alive by putting some new energy into this special place! It is fun and you can do this with a friend! You can choose the amount of time you can give weekly or monthly a few hours or a day. You can also choose what tasks fit your skill set. This is a place where you can really make a difference. Specific Needs Wanted: Volunteers to help with social media, and marketing. The Corner is on Facebook and needs to develop an Instagram presence. Currently, a website is being developed. Volunteer input with the website developer would be a big help. They are also looking for someone to create s so The Corner can send them out to their customers. (This would be a flexible job.) Other volunteer tasks: cashiering, inventory entry, pricing items, tagging items, sorting, and displaying merchandise. Flexible Time Commitment: Most volunteers choose a day of the week and help for a 3 hour shift. However, volunteering at the Corner can be flexible to accommodate both your needs and the Corner.
