2 The Collect Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salva&on: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Malachi 3:1-4 See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight-- indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, un&l they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. Canticle 16 The Song of Zechariah Benedictus Dominus Deus Luke 1: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salva&on * by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God * the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Philippians 1:3-11 I thank my God every &me I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day un&l now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to comple&on by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirma&on of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. Luke 3:1-6 In the fimeenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pon&us Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachoni&s, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a bap&sm of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is wrioen in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salva&on of God.'"

Light for the Longest Night Thursday, December 20th at 7 PM Again this year, we will be having an addi>onal Christmas service on Thursday, December 20th. The service is called Light for the Longest Night, and is for those who don t feel especially merry this Christmas: perhaps because of the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, a family disrup>on, or a health crisis that puts a ques>on mark on the future. This is a service that will celebrate the joy and hope -- the Light -- of Christmas with a sensi>vity to those who are feeling like they are in the darkness of the longest night. We are invi>ng both our members and members of the De Pere/Green Bay area community to celebrate Christmas at this service. Please reach out to your own friends and neighbors who may be interested in this service. We will have invita>ons on the usher s table at the back of church and on the table in the narthex for you to give to others. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach outside our doors for those who hunger for the Word. We also need your help. We need the full compliment of those who make a service possible: altar guild, ushers and greeters, acolytes, lectors, Eucharis>c ministers, choir members this is a terribly busy >me of year, and if you can help, please let Fr. Eric or Dcn. Mary Lynn know. We d really like you to get it on your calendar as soon as possible. Most of all, we need parishioners to ahend: we want to present a welcoming, loving worship community to those who are grieving and come to celebrate a Christmas Eucharist. Your presence is vital to this ministry! Thanks so much! Deacon Mary Lynn Your Daily Advent Devotionals Sunday Isaiah 40:1-5 Monday Genesis 3:1-7 Tuesday Genesis 3:8-13 Wednesday Hosea 11:3-4 Thursday Psalm 130 Friday Micah 6:6-8 Saturday Jeremiah 14:8-9

8 About this Service To live as a Chris&an is to respond to God in thanksgiving for our crea&on, redemp&on, and all the blessings of this life. Eucharist means thanksgiving, and this service of thanksgiving is the heart of the life of thanksgiving. It is the one service Jesus gave to his church and commanded us to use. The paoern is very simple. It falls into two parts. In the first, we hear again the readings from the Bible what God has done for us, culmina&ng in the Gospel, God s perfect word to us in Jesus Christ. This is expounded in the sermon and affirmed in the Creed. The second part expresses our response to God, beginning with prayers for the world and seeking forgiveness for our sin. Then, having greeted one another with a sign of reconcilia&on and peace, we bring our thank-offerings to the altar - the money we have, and above all, bread and wine as symbols of the gims of earth worked by human hands. In the great Prayer of Thanksgiving which follows they become, we believe, the Body and Blood of Christ, of his community and his life. We join our self-offering to his, who alone made the perfect response of love to God, asking that we may be accepted with him and in him. That acceptance is joyfully sealed in the receiving of Holy Communion. So we go out, strengthened to live our daily life to God s glory.
