So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, "Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink." As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, "Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand." But she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth." She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 7 GOSPEL Luke 7:11 17 Soon after healing the centurion's slave, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, rise!" The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his people!" Dr. Neysa Ellgren THE AFFIRMATION OF FAITH stand You, O God, are supreme and holy. You create our world and give us life. Your purpose overarches everything we do. You have always been with us. You are God. You, O God, are infinitely generous, Good beyond all measure. You came to us before we came to you. You have revealed and proved Your love for us in Jesus Christ, Who lived and died and rose again. You are with us now. You are God. You, O God, are Holy Spirit. EXCITING NEWS FROM PROJECT KATHLEEN: Project Kat is our arm of the supportive housing program through which Episcopal Community Services and partner churches uphold families in our community. Since we began in this program, we have served 7 families: 7 mothers, 1 older brother, 10 teenagers, 4 kids, 3 toddlers, and 1 baby. We are currently mentoring three families: a mom with five sons, a mom with one son, and a mom with a son and a daughter. As we move forward in our partnership with ECS, a generous member of our parish has offered $1000 in matching funds if we can raise $2000 in gifts from the congregation. This will allow us to continue to grow this community transforming program. As we work with individual families struggling to find security for their families in St. Paul, we pray that our efforts, joined with those of other churches and service groups, will strengthen the social fabric of our community so that all our children will have homes. You can enclose a donation in an envelope in the pew or with a check made out to St. John s with a memo for Project Kathleen. Our families thank you. -14-

15 FAMILY PLACE DINNER Sunday, June 13 St. John s Faith in Action Commission will again host a dinner for homeless families. If you are willing to be a part of this hands on outreach cooking, serving, eating with the families, or clean up, please talk to Sue Cadwell ( ). We have found it easiest to do most of the food preparation in our homes earlier, with last minute heating up in the Family Place kitchen.
