Barbara Mraz is preaching today at St. John the Baptist in Minneapolis. A NOTE ON THE MUSIC: The Offertory Anthem, I Was Glad, is a famous setting of psalm 122 composed in 1902 by C. Hubert H. Parry for the coronation of King Edward VII in Westminster Abbey. It was revised and later used for the coronation in 1911 of King George V. A middle section in which the choir sings Vivat Rex (Long live the king) is always omitted from non coronation services. On the feast of Christ the King, when we observe the universality of Christ as the ruler of all time and space, we remember that by our baptism we become not only prophets and priests with Christ, but we also assume that royal character by which we share in his eternal reign. -2-

The people stood by, watching Jesus on the cross; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 8 THE NICENE CREED standing We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
