3 FORTY DAYS OF LENT The number 40 is a very penitential number in the Bible. Did you know that the number 40 appears 146 times in Sacred Scripture? In the past, Canon Law only allowed a person to receive Communion once a day. However, in the 1983 revised Code of Canon Law, this practice was changed to allow Catholics to receive Holy Communion two times in one day provided that one receives Communion the second time in a Mass in which he or she participates. The confusion about this subject is due to post-conciliar changes in Church practice regarding the Eucharist. In the old 1917 Code of Canon Law, reception of Holy Communion more than once a day was prohibited. After Vatican II, this restriction was mitigated to permit reception twice in the same day.
