1 The MESSENGER Saint Luke Greek Orthodox Church A p r i l As we enter Holy Week, the realities of the final days of Jesus Christ will be made all too real for us. Palm Sunday will begin with excitement at the arrival of Jesus to Jerusalem, seated on a humble beast, with the people waving palm branches at Him as one would welcome a conquering emperor. Little did the people understand that He did not come to set up an earthly kingdom of rule, but to call us into His Father s Kingdom. Throughout the Gospels, the people were misunderstanding Him, always wanting Jesus to do more things that would become topics of conversation. But He came to teach us and save us. For much of the Gospel books, Jesus is always moving from place to place, because He has to teach and reach as many people as possible. But as we approach the Passion, everything slows down. By the time Jesus is before Pilate, every wound -- verbal and physical -- will be felt. In the services of Holy Week, we encounter this movement in Scripture and hymnography. The pain of the Lord, and that of His Mother, will be presented to us. One of the themes of the hymns of Holy Week is that of the mercy of God. The Cross is at the center of all this, as the Lord, with outstretched arms, calls all to Himself. At the Liturgy of the Sunday of the Last Judgment prior to Lent, I explained that what Jesus calls us to do in Matthew feed the hungry, visit the sick, clothe the naked, give drink to the thirsty, and visit the imprisoned -- is what He would come to identify with at the Passion. He is the one who is thirsty, hungry, naked, accounted as ill, and imprisoned. And in this time, no one would come to visit Him, or to stand by Him. But, as Saint Paul says, God is faithful. 3 cont from page 1 As we enter Holy Week, and come to the Passion and Crucifixion of our Lord Jesus, whom God the Father raises on the third day, thus conquering death, I leave you with a beautiful hymn which is chanted at the Lamentations service: Isaiah, as he watched by night, beheld the light that knows no evening, the light of Your Theophany, O Christ, that came to pass from tender love for us; and he cried aloud: The dead shall arise and they that dwell in the tomb shall be raised up, and those born on the earth shall rejoice exceedingly. May you all have a most blessed and joyful Pascha! With love in the Crucified and Risen Lord, + Fr. This feast of feasts is the most significant day in the life of the Church. It is a celebration of the defeat of death, as neither death itself nor the power of the grave could hold our Savior captive. In this victory that came through the Cross, Christ broke the bondage of sin, and t h r o u g h f a i t h o ff e r s u s restoration, transformation, and eternal life. Holy Week comes to an end at sunset of Great and H o l y Saturday, a s t h e C h u r c h prepares t o celebrate her most a n c i e n t a n d preeminent festival, Pascha, the feast of feasts. The time of preparation will give way to a time of fulfillment. The glorious a n d r e s p l e n d e n t l i g h t emanating from the empty Tomb will dispel the darkness. Christ, risen from the dead, cracks the fortress of death a n d t a k e s " c a p t i v i t y captive" (Psalm 67:19). All the limitations of our createdness are torn asunder. Death is swallowed up in victory and life is liberated. "For as by a man came death, by a man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive" (I Corinthians 15:21-22). Pascha is the dawn of the new and unending day. The Resurrection constitutes the most radical and decisive deliverance of humankind.

4 N E W S Dear St. Luke Parishioners, P A R I S H C O U N C I L Another month dawns on us with lots of exciting news and events. As we approach Palm Sunday, Holy Week, Good Friday, Pascha and Easter, with the last 10 days of fasting/lent, a lesson to remind us of the importance. I like to Paraphrase the teaching of our Lord and Savior: This people pays me lip service, but their heart is far from me. They do me empty reverence, making dogmas out of human precepts. It is not what goes into a man s mouth that makes him impure; it is what comes out of his mouth. With that said, we need to come together as a community to build a better future for our Church and parishioners, young and old. I want to urge all our parishioners to take our Stewardship pledge more seriously than ever. I am not talking only about the financial aspect. I am talking about the time and talent which is as important. We need more involvement from everyone. We have many events and celebrations that needs committees to chair and see these events through. Please volunteer to chair or serve these events and celebrations. Helen, Father and myself welcome your calls and s to add you to our list of volunteers. Helen has a calendar of all the dates and events. I want to thank the Choir, Chanters and Father for doing their best to bring us the all In English Liturgy on March 18 th. We are committed to do so once a month. Thank you to the Parish Council and all the people that helped put on the Welcome Brunch. We received many compliments and appreciation. Our intention is to replicate twice a year. We are in the final stages to get the bathroom renovations going. I am sorry about the delay as we had to change vendors. Father, Nick Vamvilis, Angie Gouzounis, Vaceleci Zaharis and I attended the Archdioceses Financial seminar/situation in Boston. It was a well informative session and eye opening. Thank you to the Dancing with the Heart Committee that has an excellent job filling the event in such a short time. We apologize in advance for those who are trying to purchase tickets on the sellout event. Please remember our Spring Cleanup Celebration. I have a feeling that there will be a cook out to make it extremely fun. A big Thank you to the PHILOPTOCHOS for working hard on the Palm Sunday and Easter marketing material. It was elegant. Last but not least, I want to wish all of you along with families a Happy, Healthy and a blessed Palm Sunday and Happy Easter. I pray that the blessing of our Lord and Savior be upon all of us, Assaad Andrew Hallak

6 Dear Fellow Parishioners; N E W S Stewardship Message Whatever you do work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men. Colossians 3:23 Great Lent is a time to reorient our lives and reorganize our priorities and become fully engaged in the life of the Kingdom of God. As Orthodox Christians, we are the inheritors of a great tradition founded by the Apostles which focuses on the greatest gift God could give: the gift of His Son, who voluntarily died on the Cross and rose from the dead for our salvation. As we journey through the lenten season, we should be grateful for all our blessings including the blessing of our beloved community within our St. Luke parish. Let us continue to work together, to pray together and to commune together to be a strength for one another. Our St. Luke 2018 Stewardship campaign is in full swing. We are thankful to all of our stewards who have submitted their pledge of time, talent and of treasure. Despite the wintery weather that this lenten season has brought us, many of us have been able to take advantage of the many beautiful services offered and have listened to expert speakers during our Wednesday suppers. In mid-march, we had a wonderful turnout of our parish as we enjoyed fellowship during a Sunday brunch after our first all-english service. The Youth stewards of our parish are preparing for their annual 30-Hour Famine where they raise funds for a worthy Christian charity as they commit to fast for two days. Many talented bakers are preparing Easter bread and cookies for Pascha and our parish is looking forward to coming together to celebrate our 2nd Annual Dancing With Heart event. Many are working together in the spirit of working for the Lord and in sharing our time and talent at St. Luke s! May God Bless our Many Gifts, Joe and Meghan Dasco Stewardship Committee We hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather! G O Y A Our volunteering event at the Soldiers Home took place on March 24th, and we enjoyed serving the veterans who served us. We are planning for our annual 30 Hour Famine for March 30th to April 1st and a fundraising dance for May 12th. At our March meeting, we also discussed an outing to the Greek Independence Day parade in New York City on April 22nd. Finally, GOYA is thinking about purchasing some recycling bins for the church so we can be more environmentally friendly. This is the busiest time of the year for GOYA, and we thank all who support GOYA as we continue to pursue our ministry! Philippos Dimitrolgou GOYA President C H O I R Our practices are weekly on Thursdays at 6:30. Please don t hesitate to contact Toni Rizas or any choir member if interested.

7 The Endowment Fund The Endowment Fund recently received the following donation: ~In Memory of Ralph Masterjohn~ Barbara Savas The Endowment Fund Committee extends its gratitude to all who support the Fund, which supports our Parish Ministries. Fellowship Hour following Liturgy is an important ministry allowing people to connect and spend time together. Please consider helping sponsor a coffee hour. It can be as simple as a plate of cookies or as elaborate as you wish. Everything is appreciated, as it is an offering to each other. April 15th Potluck Coffee Hour and a special surprise! Open Dates All Sundays in May We thank you in advance for helping to continue this tradition. The Endowment Fund Committee would like to remind our ministry chairs that funds are available for you to request. We ask that you meet with the members of your ministry and discuss ways that these funds can assist your ministry. In the coming weeks, the Endowment Fund Committee members will speak with the ministry chairs to discuss ways in which these funds can be used. We would like to remind the parents of our youth that registration is open for the Metropolis Summer Camp. We encourage parents to go to the website and register their children for one of the four available sessions. This is an opportunity for our youth to foster a life-long appreciation and love of their Orthodox faith, friends, and cultural heritage with other young people from our Diocese. The Endowment Fund Committee is pleased to be sponsoring four of our youth who will be participating in Project Mexico. They will be joining youth from our sister parish Sts. Constantine and Helen from Webster, MA. They will be accompanied by Father Luke Veronis and will be going from July We wish them much success and look forward to our youth participating in this wonderful ministry yearly. 12 Dancing With Heart It s hard to believe that our event will soon be here. By the time you receive this Messenger, our Dancing With Heart fundraiser will be just weeks away. To say that time flies would be an understatement and the closer the event gets, the faster time flies! But thanks to an experienced and hard-working committee, this event is running just as smoothly as it did last year. It is truly being run by a TEAM, a well -oiled machine. Each person is busy doing what they know they are responsible for; thinking ahead; and planning and adjusting to the fact that we will be entertaining almost twice the crowd that we welcomed to last year s performance! All this can be credited to an awesome group of people who have worked together on this or that committee/event over a span of many years, and the right hand definitely knows what the left hand is doing! We can t thank them enough. Our event has brought many firsts to the St. Luke community. First, after last year s successful show, we had to move to a larger venue. Secondly, we did not have to work hard to sell tickets they sold themselves. Thirdly, we had a sell-out crowd two months in advance of the scheduled event and we must say, that no one was more surprised than we were at this most unexpected occurrence. Additionally, we had people who worked with us last year a choreographer, the DJ, and a judge who all asked to be part of our event this year. And finally, (thank you Meg Dasco), and much to our amazement, we received a quarter page article in the Springfield Republican! On our journey planning this year s event, we have met many wonderful people Daryll and Gunnar Sverisson, owners of Ballroom Fever Dance Studio, have welcomed us with open arms. They not only provided us studio space for our initial Meet and Greet, but they also provided us with skilled and knowledgeable dance instructors who have offered their own ideas and creativity making our show better than ever. For that, we thank them. Susie Hannoush, manager of event planning at the Cedars Banquet Hall, has taken us under her wing. From our first meeting and throughout our planning process, she has been accommodating opening up the hall for us to check out the kitchen, the lighting, the changing rooms, and designing a mock set-up. Most importantly, she has graciously shared her expertise in event planning with us. For that, we thank her. We would be remiss in not mentioning Lee Roberts, public relations specialist at Shriners Hospital for Children-Springfield. She has always made time in her busy schedule to meet with us to share in our partnership fully. Having run many affairs for the hospital, she has willingly shared her wealth of knowledge and ideas in planning such a large event was astronomical. For that, we thank her. So as you can see, an event such as this has to pull together the many spokes of the wheel in order to make it work smoothly. But an event such as ours also allows us to meet many wonderful people; to reach out to our community; to provide charitable fundraising for a most worthy cause; and to spread the word about the on-going good work of St. Luke.
