2 FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT First Reading: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, The people of Judah practiced many abominations. They mocked the messengers God sent among them, until he grew so angry he delivered them to the King of the Chaldeans. Those who weren t killed were exiled and became servants for seventy years. Cyrus, King of Persia, was ordered to build a temple to God in Jerusalem, and he freed the servants as God had inspired him to do. Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 Paul declares that God brought us to life in Jesus, though we had been dead from our sins. He reminds us that it was not a reward for our good service so no one should take credit. Instead, we must remember that it was not our doing, but a sign of God s mercy and love for us. Gospel: John 3:14-21 God so loved the world, he sent us his only Son so that all who believed would have eternal life in him. The light came into the world, but those who were wicked avoided it, for fear that their evil deeds would be exposed. But those who believed were unafraid of the light, where it would be clear that their deeds were done in God. SAINT ELIZABETH-ST. The obligation to fast applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger. The obligation of abstinence affects all Catholics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to abstain from meat and all meat products. The obligation of fast and abstinence, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them without good cause, would be considered a grave matter. Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to perform some other penitential act, or to abstain on another day. Join our faith community and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a lifechanging Lenten journey of encounter with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family s CRS Rice Bowl from Church this weekend. During the 40 days of Lent, as companions on the journey, we will encounter our neighbor. ENCOUNTER ANDRISE We encounter Andrise, a teacher in Haiti who knows the importance of forming young people who will give back to the community and their country. Reflect on the role teachers have played in bringing you closer to God and your community. How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit crsricebowl.org for more.

4 YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS Men s Cornerstone Retreat Friday-Saturday June 8-9, 2018 Loyola Jesuit Center 161 James Street Morristown, NJ Your chance to rejuvenate and go back to your jobs, families and faith with renewed vigor. Men s Cornerstone is a 27 hour overnight retreat offered to the men of our parish by the Men s Cornerstone Team at St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Chester, NJ. This is a retreat prepared and presented by guys for guys ordinary lay parishioners like yourselves. It s an opportunity for rest and contemplation, prayer ad renewal. This is your chance to remember who you really are, grow closer to God and reflect on the things that really matter. The late Justice Antonin Scalia personally saw the importance of retreats. He writes, If you don t have a weekend to spare once a year to think exclusively about things that really matter well, you haven t planned your life correctly. In addition, Justice Scalia wryly observed, In the Gospels, of course, Jesus is incessantly going off all by himself; and he needed it less than we do. Interested? Monday, March 26, 2018 Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, 32 Elm St., Metuchen ~ 7:30 PM Bishop James F. Checchio will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. Saint Ambrose [ ] began this custom which we now call the Chrism Mass in his Cathedral in Milan. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint infants and hands of adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirm in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass.
