Pastoral Care of the Sick: The Holy Eucharist and the Anointing of the Sick are available to the sick and shut-ins upon request. First Penance, First Eucharist, Confirmation: Children are expected to receive a Catholic upbringing in their family life, to worship regularly at Sunday Mass, and to receive ongoing religious education in the years preceding the reception of these sacraments. Matrimony: Specific times are set for the celebration of marriage during the year. To allow ample time for preparation, please contact the parish office at least one year before the intended wedding date. 3 READINGS First Reading - Exodus 3:1-8a, Second Reading - 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, Gospel - Luke 13:1-9 MID-LENT CHECK-IN God says to Moses, This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you... The LORD, the God of your [ancestors], the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob (Exodus 3:14, 15). As Jesus would later say, God is not a God of the dead, but of the living, and so we believe that the dead will one day rise. At this midpoint of Lent, we pause to consider how our repentance is leading us to the Resurrection, to our reunion with the great I AM. Part of our repentance involves working to secure justice for all and helping our neighbor to live in God s ways. We encourage each other and nurture each other, like the compassionate gardener of today s Gospel, who tells the owner of the orchard that he will nurture the tree, fertilize it, and perhaps it will bear fruit. STEWARDSHIP SCRIPTURE REFLECTION He said to the gardener, For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. (Luke 13:7) We can all be like the barren fig tree at times. Do you cling to what you have or do you generously share with others? How will you respond when God asks you what you have done with all the gifts He has given you? Remember, not only are we called to be generous, we are called to develop and nurture our gifts and return with increase. PRAYER TO END ABORTION Lord God, I thank You today for the gift of my life, and for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, yet I rejoice that You have conquered death by the Resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself never to be silent, never to be passive, never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the prolife movement, and never to stop defending life until all my brothers and sisters are protected, and our Nation once again becomes a Nation with liberty and justice not just for some, but for all. There will be speakers from the Diocese and the preaching and teaching will include bringing to life the message of conversion that is present on St. Juan Diego s cloak (tilma). Our Blessed Lady points to Her Divine Son, Jesus Christ, and desires to lead each of us into a deep and vibrant relationship with Him. A new enthusiasm for the Faith will begin the process of renewal in our Diocese of Metuchen. Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us that night. The Knights of Columbus Father Carey Council # 1280 will host their traditional LENTEN FISH FRY each Friday night during Lent, except Good Friday, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 164 High Street. CHRISM MASS Monday, April 15 4:00 PM Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi, Metuchen Bishop James Checchio will celebrate the Chrism Mass with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the rites of anointing. Saint Ambrose [ ] began this custom which we now call the Chrism Mass in his Cathedral in Milan. These Holy Oils, which are used to sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint infants and adults before their Baptism; the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the infirmed in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass.
