Any questions, please see or Val Sternadore (valiaws@yahoo.com). --The Metropolitan was admitted to the hospital following a tragic car accident on the eve of the Centennial Celebration of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. His Eminence Metropolitan Antony underwent a surgery on his ankle and has been receiving treatments. His physicians are pleased with the success of the treatments thus far and look forward to confirmation of this success in the months ahead. I can feel the three broken ribs healing and will be off my left foot until the ankle heals after surgery - they say for two months. I beg of all who may read this: DO NOT DRIVE WHEN YOU ARE TIRED - NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES YOU MAY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE AND BEEN OK. That was my situation. Now, however, I suffer for not making the right decision with my own injuries and even more so because my beloved dog and great friend - Lacey - has died from her injuries.

3 Don t let this happen to any of you and your families! I love you all dearly and I want you to know that your thoughts and prayers have been such support for me - more than you can imagine! Prayer is a powerful weapon against the enemies of Christ and even more powerful when concentrated on beseeching His healing touch. I pray for blessing abundant in each of your lives and embrace you all in His Love. May the Grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Love of God the Father and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. + Antony His Eminence Metropolitan Antony was released from the hospital and transferred to a local NJ Rehabilitation Center. 4 Our preparations are currently underway for our annual Ukrainian Festival. This event is a major fundraiser for our Church and an opportunity to host community members from the Blackstone Valley and beyond on our church grounds. The Festival Committee is hard at work planning and preparing for this event. As always, the Ladies Sodality is spending countless hours preparing a variety of foods to offer our guests. It is sure to be a fun-filled day for all! In order to make this fundraising event as successful and profitable as possible, the Festival Committee is requesting your help. Many volunteers are needed in order for the Festival to run as smoothly as possible. Whether you are able to donate your time for the day or just a few hours, please take a moment to complete the Festival Sponsorship/Volunteer Form. You may return it in the church vestibule, or to the address provided. Listed on the 2nd page of the form are the many items that must be purchased for our Festival. You may choose to donate money to cover the cost of an item OR make a flat donation that may be applied toward miscellaneous Festival costs. You donations are tax deductible, will help defray the overall cost of our Festival, and will increase profits. With your help, this year s Ukrainian Festival will be an extraordinary success! Enclosed in today s bulletin you can review the Festival Sponsorship/Volunteer Form. --November 2017-November 2018 is the 85th Anniversary year of the HOLODOMOR: A nationwide effort has been launched to raise public awareness about the genocidal famine of We are forming a planning committee to assist with commemoration efforts in Rhode Island this fall. Some ideas include... Having the governor and/or mayor sign a proclamation recognizing Holodomor. Fundraising for a Holodomor monument near our Memorial monument on our parish grounds. A joint memorial service at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church. Holodomor documentary viewing event open to the public at St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church Parish Hall. 7 In the Orthodox view the Transfiguration is not only a feast in honor of Jesus, but a feast of the Holy Trinity, for all three Persons of the Trinity are interpreted as being present at that moment: God the Father spoke from heaven; God the Son was the one being transfigured, and God the Holy Spirit was present in the form of a cloud. In this sense, the transfiguration is also considered the "Small Epiphany" (the "Great Epiphany" being the Baptism of Jesus, when the Holy Trinity appeared in a similar pattern). The Transfiguration is ranked as one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox liturgical calendar, and is celebrated with an All- Night Vigil beginning on the eve of the Feast. Grapes are traditionally brought to church to be blessed after the Divine Liturgy on the day of the Transfiguration. If grapes are not available in the area, apples or some other fruit may be brought. This begins the "Blessing of First Fruits" for the year. The Transfiguration is the second of the "Three Feasts of the Savior in August", the other two being the Procession of the Cross on August 14 and the Icon of Christ Not Made by Hand on August 29. The Transfiguration is preceded by a one-day Forefeast and is followed by an Afterfeast of eight days, ending the day before the Forefeast of the Dormition. In Eastern Orthodox theology, the Tabor Light is the light revealed on Mount Tabor at the Transfiguration of Jesus, identified with the light seen by Paul on the road to Damascus. Fasting Guidelines: Dormition Fast On Tuesday, August 28, we will celebrate the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-virgin Mary. In preparation for this great feast of the Mother of God, we observe a two-week period of fasting from August Following are the fasting guidelines for the Dormition Fast. Note that these fasting guidelines are general. Fasting is a spiritual discipline that should be practiced with the oversight and direction of your spiritual father. If you have any specific questions about

8 how the fasting discipline applies to you, you should consult your spiritual father. The general guidelines for the Dormition Fast are as follows: WEEKDAYS are Strict Fast Days. On these days we abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, fowl, wine, and oil. SATURDAYS and SUNDAYS are Wine and Oil Days. On these days the fast is relaxed to permit wine and oil, but we still abstain from meat, dairy, fish with backbones, and fowl. The one exception to these general rules is that the Great Feast of the Holy Transfiguration of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ (August 19), which always falls during the Dormition Fast, is celebrated as a Fish, Wine, and Oil Day. On this great feastday, the fast is relaxed to permit fish with backbones, in addition to wine and oil, but we still abstain from meat, dairy, and fowl. Notes: 1. Meals for the fast should follow the dietary restrictions and be cooked simply. Portions should be smaller than usual. 2. If you have a medical condition that requires you to relax the fasting guidelines, then do so. 3. Generally speaking, children and elderly people are allowed to relax the fast under the guidance of their spiritual father. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
