3 Communication!!!!! There are a lot of things happening at St. Paul s! A new form has been developed so that the office can keep up with events and programs and be sure information is communicated to all who should know. In addition, the new Audio Video System in the Parish Hall has many capabilities for streaming, playing DVD s, slide shows, music, etc. To both ends, we are asking that you fill out a Communication and Tech Request Form for your events and or turn it in to the office. Copies of the form will be available in the Parish Office and on the table in the Parish Hall. If you need help putting an announcement together, Susan is happy to assist. For more information about St. Paul s Go to our website, - to hear the Sermons, Announcements, Schedules, Mars Hill Newsletter, etc. The Church of St. Paul is on Facebook and Twitter! Like our page and sign up to follow us to get the latest updates on what s going on! (We sit to hear the lessons.) The First Lesson Isaiah 61:10-62:3 A reading from the prophet Isaiah. I will greatly reoice in the Lord, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her ewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. St. Paul's is an affirming and inclusive Christian community! The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God Striving through worship, love and service to welcome all people ust as God created you. No matter where you are on your ourney of faith, and whether you are single, married, divorced, separated, or partnered, our welcome knows no boundaries of age, race, ethnicity, culture, gender expression, sexual orientation, economic condition, physical or mental ability. We believe that God delights in the diversity of creation and so do we! All are welcome, no exceptions! 18 The Psalm Psalm 147:13-21 Let us read verses of Psalm 147 together. 13 Worship the LORD, O Jerusalem; * praise your God, O Zion; 14 For he has strengthened the bars of your gates; * he has blessed your children within you. 15 He has established peace on your borders; * he satisfies you with the finest wheat. 3

4 16 He sends out his command to the earth, * and his word runs very swiftly. 17 He gives snow like wool; * he scatters hoarfrost like ashes. 18 He scatters his hail like bread crumbs; * who can stand against his cold? 19 He sends forth his word and melts them; * he blows with his wind, and the waters flow. 20 He declares his word to Jacob, * his statutes and his udgments to Israel. 21 He has not done so to any other nation; * to them he has not revealed his udgments. Halleluah! The Second Lesson Galatians 3:23-25; 4:4-7 A reading from Paul s letter to the Galatians. Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disciplinarian until Christ came, so that we might be ustified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subect to a disciplinarian. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (We stand to sing and hear the Gospel.) 4 In the Interim Announcements Welcome! If you are worshipping here for the first time, please sign our guest book. Glory to you, Lord Christ. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. Sanctuary Epiphany Celebration 11:30 A.M. Parish Hall There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. (John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'") From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known. 16 5

6 The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Welcome to St. Paul s Episcopal Church DeKalb, Illinois, Diocese of Chicago Member of the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion The Sermon The Reverend Heidi Haverkamp (Silence for meditation.) The Nicene Creed (We stand to affirm our faith by reciting the Nicene Creed.) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to udge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6 Celebration of the Holy Eucharist Second and Fourth Sundays of the month 8:00 AM (spoken service) Every Sunday 10:30 AM (with music) Child care for infants & young children is available Sundays 9:15 A.M. 11:45 A.M. in the Nursery. The Blessing We give thanks for all those celebrating birthdays this week; especially for Donna deoliviera; and for all those celebrating anniversaries this week. Wondrous God, thank you for the miracle and grace of Christmas. May we be true, all the year long, to its call to believe the impossible and to make our humble humanity the place of your dwelling. Hear us we pray, and take to your heart all of our longing and thanks; through Jesus the Christ, through the Spirit. Amen. 8 May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Let us depart from this place in peace, and as we go on our way, forget not the poor, pray for the sick, make no peace with oppression, and love one another as God in Christ has loved us, and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, one God, Mother of us all, be upon you this day and forever more. Amen. 13

9 And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen The Breaking of the Bread (Silence is observed after the bread is broken.) 10 Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Holy God, our Source and Ending, Alpha and Omega, we give thanks to you! You have called all creation into being, setting the earth on its foundations. You have spread out the heavens like a tent, and set a boundary to the seas, you have filled the world with your creatures and called all things good. The heavenly beings are your messengers night and day, and with them we sing and give glory to you: Sanctus S 130 Holy, holy, holy, Lord & bb b & b b b bb & b b b. Ho-san - na in the high -. est. est. ΠΠIn these latter days, God leaned toward the earth and spoke to us by a Son, Jesus the Beloved. Born of our sister Mary and the Holy Spirit, guarded by our brother Joseph with fatherly care, Jesus came among us as a baby, humbly born, cradled beside the beasts and warmed by their breath, human as we are, in need of human love. Yet kings bowed down before him, bringing gifts and emperors were troubled by his reign this Child in whom all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. This Word of God made flesh and full of grace was sent to deliver us from our sin, from the power of evil and the fear of death. As a servant, Jesus emptied himself of might upon the cross, and as the risen Anointed One is enthroned at God s right hand to bring mercy and ustice to all the earth at the end of days. And so, reoicing in all God has done for us, we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Holy God, as you visited us in the birth of Jesus, visit us now by the power of your Spirit in these creatures of bread and wine, making them for us the Body and Blood of Christ, the banquet of heaven here on earth, as we remember how Jesus took bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to his friends, saying, Take, eat, This is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. And after supper, took a cup of wine and blessed and gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you. This cup is the new covenant in my blood, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Blessed God, shed your grace brighter than starlight on us that we may bear your good tidings to all and renew the weary world in your name: the name of Emmanuel God-With-Us, to whom we give honor and glory in oy, now and for ever. Amen. 11
