We light three candles to remind us of God s light which has come to us all through the Christ. We open our hearts to that light, and ask for help to shine with the brilliance of love. All of our waiting is a waiting for God. God of our hearts, we wait for you alone. The Liturgy of the Word We stand to sing and pray. 3 Household Prayer: Morning God, surely you are my salvation. I begin this day without fear, trusting you, for you are my strength. Help me to meditate all day on the thought that you are reoicing in me! And keep me keenly aware, as I travel through this day, of ways that I may help others, especially those with special needs. Then bring me home to you at the close of the day. Amen. Household Prayer: Evening Thank you, God, for the gift of today and for guarding my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus. All that I did and all that I left undone, I now give over to your safekeeping, trusting in your peace that surpasses all understanding. Be my rest as I sleep tonight, and renew me in your love for another day. Amen. A word about the Household Prayers: These prayers are printed on a page of their own so that you can tear them out and use them in your devotions at home. These prayers come from an anthology titled Feasting on the Word, that includes several liturgies for services. Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. We sit to hear the lessons. The First Lesson Zephaniah 3:14-20 Lector A reading from the prophet Zephaniah. Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Reoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the udgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will reoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. 5 Communication!!!!! There are a lot of things happening at St. Paul s! A new form has been developed so that the office can keep up with events and programs and be sure information is communicated to all who should know. In addition, the new Audio Video System in the Parish Hall has many capabilities for streaming, playing DVD s, slide shows, music, etc. To both ends, we are asking that you fill out a Communication and Tech Request Form for your events and or turn it in to the office. Copies of the form will be available in the Parish Office and on the table in the Parish Hall. If you need help putting an announcement together, Susan is happy to assist. Glory to you, Lord Christ. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." 6 The Sermon The Reverend Heidi Haverkamp Silence for meditation We stand to affirm our faith by reciting the Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to udge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Safe Passage Gifts Once again we are collecting donations for Safe Passage, our local Domestic Violence Prevention Agency. St Paul's has contributed to them at Christmas for many years. This year, as last, we will give funds to them so they can purchase gift cards and use them where needed. If you would like to participate please write a check to St Paul's by Dec 17th, list "Safe Passage" in the "Memo" line and we will forward the total to Safe Passage. 7 Book Club Prayers of the for Advent The next book we discuss will be Barbara Brown Taylors, The Altar in the World. Next the Book Club Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 27th at 5:30 p.m. in St. Paul's Parish Hall. Feel free to contact Marilyn C., Donna O., Sandra L., and/or Jennie C. for information and/or feedback. Our group is open to discussions on book chapters, articles, sermons, speeches, and other interests to the group. Our group is still new and learning how we want to develop. We are open to reading aloud chapters or articles at the meeting without preparation and then umping into a conversation. Have you read something that you would like to share? Are you interested in what other Episcopalians are reading? Our little group might be for you. Epiphany Celebration Join us for our Epiphany Celebration after the 10:30 AM Service on Sunday, January 6 th. Sloppy Joes made by Rick Johns will be served. Please see a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall for volunteering to bring a sidedish/salad or Epiphany cake (cake trinkets provided). After lunch, kids will try their luck at the piñata. Send your Christmas flower memorials by Today We are accepting donations for Christmas flowers now through December 16th. Please write Christmas Flowers in the memo of your check and be sure to include your dedication. Look for the Christmas Flower envelopes and place these in the collection plate. Suggested donation is $25-$30. During the season of Advent, greens are used on the altar instead of flowers. 18 God of the prophets, give your church courage to speak truth, and to tell of your love. God of Mary and Elizabeth, give your church grace to be pregnant with hope and to bring forth new life for a barren world. God of our mothers, hear us and help us! God of Zachariah and Joseph. Give your church dreams and visions, and the courage to follow them. God of our fathers, hear us and help us! God of the shepherds, give your church humility, and to all who sit in darkness, alone and afraid, a light from heaven proclaiming peace. God of the shepherds, hear us and help us! God of the magi, give your church gifts, and the will to leave home to find you among the poor. God of the magi, hear us and help us! 7

8 God of the Holy Innocents, give your church power to stand against violence to protect the powerless. God of the victim, hear us and help us! We especially pray this week for Averil Schrieber, Joyce Kotvan, Chris Rogers, Jackie, Zachary and the Jacobs family, Marilyn, Dorothy, Margaret, Patty, Kathy, David, Clark, Myrna, Terry Costello, the Langer family, Roy Nilsen, and Rosemarie. That they may be delivered from their distress. God of Resurrection, we remember those who have died. God of Resurrection, hear us and help us! Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. We give thanks for all those celebrating birthdays this week; especially for Martin Mounts; and for all those celebrating anniversaries this week, especially Rob and Peggy Russell. Amen. In the Interim Announcements Welcome! If you are worshipping here for the first time, please sign our guest book. You are welcome to oin us for refreshments after the service in the Parish Hall. Mother Heidi Haverkamp will be our -In-Charge until our new permanent rector, Mother Barbara Wilson, arrives on Sunday, January 20. Mother Heidi will serve us as part-time interim, working Sundays, and usually Tuesdays and Thursdays. Her is Children s Christmas Party The annual Children's Christmas Party will be today, December 16th, following the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Time to decorate the Christmas trees, frost Christmas cookies, fashion Christmas crafts, followed by a pizza lunch. All are welcome to partake of the fun and fellowship as we decorate the Parish Hall trees with ornaments and crafts. Stay for pizza! Christmas Eve Celebration The Celebration of Christmas will be at 6:00 P.M. on Monday, December 24 th, and will begin with special music from the St. Paul s Choirs.
