8 S P I R I T U A L I T Y O F T H E R E A D I N G S Reading I: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Responsorial Psalm 15:2-3, 3-4, 4-5 Reading II: James 1:17-18, 21b- 22, 27 Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, The Heart of the Matter The people in this week s Gospel are quarreling about who has and who hasn t washed his hands for dinner. If you were a follower of the Jewish custom in that time, you would know that every person was required to wash up before eating. The rule was a tradition of the elders, to preserve physical health, of course. But Jesus is now telling people they have to live also from the inner meaning of traditions and laws. So, let us talk about the interior of traditions, rules and laws. Children do not yet have a developed interior value system. As parents know. It is bedtime. Let s brush our teeth and get our pajamas on. I don t want to. I know, it is hard to stop playing and go to bed. I understand. But bedtime is now so let's get started. But why? Because we have to get our rest so we can be bright and cheerful tomorrow. Why? Because I said so, now get moving. Oh mom. Rules, the right ones, must be imposed upon a child. But as people grow up, the child s why? question gets answered by experience and maturity. Adults go to bed because they need a certain amount of sleep each night and they know it. Well, at least most do. Then why must we have rules and laws in the first place? I have heard the following said: rules describe the minimum that should be done in order to belong to a country or state or city or business or group or family. Not too many rules, not too few (which is difficult to achieve). Under the best circumstances, people follow the rules because their allegiance comes from within and they act from their own desire. Apply this to a group. Take a faith-sharing group, for instance. It has an implicit expectation, even a requirement, that its members be present at each weekly meeting. What if a person shows up only once or twice a year, but when she does, she is the heart-and-soul of the discussion? And what if another person attends every single meeting but contributes nothing and in fact has no interest in the topics? Neither person really fits well into the group, but which would you rather work with? The seldom-attending one nevertheless has real relevance to the organization and might not need much convincing to come more often (and therefore comply with the rule). But it would be much harder to kindle a fire in the second, wouldn t it, the one who is following the external rule but not its insides. The interior life of Jesus is the Holy Spirit. Jesus knew that any law of the Kingdom of God must emerge from love or else be empty. He was upset that Pharisees and Scribes had manipulated exterior laws to feed their own egos. This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. He is not telling them to ignore the laws and have just inner devotion. He is saying you must have both. Would it be worthwhile for you and me to look at the various obligations in our life and weigh how much correspondence they have to our inner values and convictions? Maybe that would help us have the right heart both inside and outside! John Foley, S. J. of the Center for Liturgy Image: Deborah Ugoretz, 2009, exodusconversations.org F A I T H Q U E S T I O N S Question for Children: What steps can you take to more humbly welcome Christ into your heart? Question for Youth: Jesus warns about the things that will lead us away from God. What tempts you away from being the person that God created you to be? Question for Adults: Based on this reading from James, what is the sign in one s life that faith is present?

9 S A I N T O F T H E W E E K Augustine, Bishop and Doctor, Augustine was the eldest son of St. Monica and Patricius, a pagan Roman official. As a young man, he studied at the university at Carthage with the intent of becoming a lawyer, but gave up law to devote himself to literary pursuits. Along the way, he abandoned his Christian faith. For about fifteen years, Augustine adopted the Manichean heresy. The Manichaens believed that evil was caused by an outside force, thus, people were relieved of guilt for their sins. Augustine lived with a mistress who bore him a son. He studied and taught rhetoric at Tagaste, Carthage, Rome, and Milan. In Milan, Augustine was impressed by the sermons of St. Ambrose, the bishop of the city. His influence, as well as the prayers of his mother, brought him back to Christianity and he was baptized by Ambrose at the Easter Vigil in 387. Later that year, Augustine set out to return to Tagaste accompanied by his mother and son. He planned to teach and to live a life of prayer and meditation in community. On the way, his mother died; two years later, his son died. Soon after, Augustine was ordained a priest at Hippo and, three years later, became the Bishop of Hippo. Though he preferred the monastic life, Augustine became the dominant figure in African church affairs, writing profusely, preaching, and defending the faith. To this day, many of his two hundred treatises, some three hundred letters, and nearly four hundred sermons are of major importance in the study of theology and philosophy. His towering intellect has molded the thought of Western Christianity to such an extent that his ideas dominated the thinking of the western world for a thousand years after his death. He and Thomas Aquinas are considered to be the greatest intellects the Catholic Church has ever produced. St. Augustine is the patron saint of brewers, printers, and theologians. His memorial is celebrated on the day following the memorial to his mother, August 28. Augustine's message today: It took over thirty years for Augustine to recognize what God was calling him to do. When he accepted that call, he became one of the Church s greatest theologians. We all know people whose talents could be of great service to God if they were to acknowledge and embrace their calling. Are you one of these people? Do you pray for those who might perform wonders if they turned their lives around? Or do you just dismiss these people? DIOCESAN NOTES Will You Give Your Yes? Will you spare two to four hours to volunteer at one of the most powerful Catholic evangelical events in America? You do not need to miss conference sessions when you volunteer.
