1 L a ke of the I sles Lutheran Church Second Sunday after Pentecost June 3, 2018 The Old Testament makes clear that Sabbath-keeping is meant for the welfare of all. God delivered the Israelites out of slavery, so that they would not ever work anyone else seven days a week. Jesus does not reject Sabbath-keeping, but defends its original life-enhancing meaning. This morning Pastor Haug continues his summer sermon series based on the Book of Acts.. Inspired by Christ, living and growing in faith, we are a loving and open community of worship, witness, and service in God s world.

2 Gathering Following the call of God s Spirit, the community of faith gathers, welcoming one another and praying for God s mercy to fill the church and the world. 3 Dismissal Song Acts 3:1-10 Reading 1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, at three o'clock in the afternoon. 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried in. People would lay him daily at the gate of the temple called the Beautiful Gate so that he could ask for alms from those entering the temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them for alms. 4 Peter looked intently at him, as did John, and said, "Look at us." 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, "I have no silver or gold, but what I have I give you; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, stand up and walk." 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 Jumping up, he stood and began to walk, and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 All the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and they recognized him as the one who used to sit and ask for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. Mark 2:23-3:6 Jesus challenges the prevailing interpretation of what is lawful on the Sabbath and tell his critics that the Sabbath was made for humankind. Gospel One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath? And he said to them, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath. Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Come forward. Then he said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill? But they were silent. He looked around at them with anger; he was grieved at their hardness of heart and said to the man, Stretch out your hand. He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. P: The Gospel of our Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. 4

Please be seated Communion Verse Meditation Distribution Music Distribution Communion is by common cup or intinction: For the common cup, receive a piece of the bread, and drink from the white chalice. For intinction dip the bread into the brown cup with the wine (dark) or grape juice (light) as you prefer, then eat. At Lake of the Isles, we practice open communion. All who hunger for the presence of Christ in their life are welcome at this table. Gluten free wafers are available in the silver cup. WORKING SERIES SUNDAY, JUNE 10 TH AT 11:00 A.M. Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do. Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work, and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do. On Sunday, June 10th, we ll hear from Theodora (Tedi) Mathis. Tedi is a Social Media Strategist and she has worked on brands such as Thrivent Financial, Cheerios, Yoplait and the Minnesota Super Bowl. She currently works for a company called The Social Lights, a social media consultancy helping companies grow by strengthening their social capability. Tedi s talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first minutes will be an informal talk by Tedi, leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.
