O t h e r N e w s The women of Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary invite the women of our church to join them for an evening hearing Nancy Kingma speak on Grief: Infertility, Miscarriage, Stillbirth and Newborn Death. Nancy is a licensed therapist and nurse, and has been Bereavement Services Coordinator at Spectrum Health and Helen DeVos Children s Hospital. The Men s Group Bible Study plans to begin another season on Saturday, October 6 at 7:30 AM. We will meet on the first Saturday of each month in the cafeteria at PRTS. We hope to continue our study of Ephesians. Coffee and refreshments will be served at 7:15 AM. Psalm 85:7-8 C o n g r e g a t i o n a l L i f e Today, Pastor Macleod will lead our worship services. This morning, the celebration of the Lord s Supper will take place in our midst. Those who are full or associate members in our congregation may sit at the Lord s Table. Regular attendees and visitors who are confessing members in good standing in a recognized church, desiring to partake of the Lord s Supper with us for the first time, are asked to meet briefly with the consistory before this morning s service. The 2 nd pew on both sides of the main sanctuary will be open and reserved for those who have difficulty walking to the table, and for overflow if needed. This evening, Dr. David Murray will be installed to the office of Professor of Theology. Next Sunday, Pastor Macleod will lead our worship services. We welcome into full membership, Dan & Dawn Vlietstra and their baptized children, Calvin, April, Mariah, Caleb and Jesse. May the Lord bless them among us. If you are interested in taking the New Members Class or the Confession of Faith Class, please contact Pastor Macleod this week. The Tuesday morning Ladies Bible Study will resume on Tuesday, September 25. We plan to meet on the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesdays of the month. Please contact Jeanette DeBlaay if you are interested in attending so we can be sure to have enough books. We look forward to starting a new season of Ladies Bible Study. All women ages 16+ are invited to join. We will be meeting at church every other Wednesday from October March. Our first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10 at 7 PM. This year we will be studying Abigail: Living with the Difficult People in Your Life, along with The Power of Words, both by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth. 3 M e d i t a t i o n COMMUNION WITH CHRIST Communion with Christ is the privilege of those who are continually striving to grow in grace, and faith, and knowledge, and conformity to the mind of Christ in all things who do not look to the things behind, and count not themselves to have attained, but press on toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14. Union is the bud, but communion is the flower; union is the babe, communion is the strong man. He that has union with Christ does well; but he that enjoys communion with Him does far better. Both have one life, one hope, one heavenly seed in their hearts, one Lord, one Savior, one Holy Spirit, one eternal home: but union is not as good as communion! The grand secret of communion with Christ is to be continually living the life of faith in Him, and drawing out of him every hour the supply that every hour requires. To me, said Paul to live is Christ. Philippians 1:21. I live: yet not I, but Christ liveth in me. Galatians 2:20. Communion like this is the secret of the abiding joy and peace in believing, which the saints of old notoriously possessed. None were ever more humble, or more deeply convinced of their own infirmities and corruption. They would have told you that Romans 7 precisely described their own experience. They would have said continually, The remembrance of our sins is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. But they were ever looking unto Jesus, and in Him they were ever able to rejoice. Communion like this is the secret of the splendid victories which men as they, won over sin, the world, and the fear of death. They did not sit still idly, saying, I leave it all for Christ to do for me, but, strong in the Lord, they used the divine nature implanted in them, boldly, and confidently, and were more than conquerors through Him that loved them. Romans 8:37. Like Paul, they would have said, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13. Ignorance of the life of communion is one of many reasons why so many of this age are hankering after the Confessional and strange views of the real presence in the Lord s Supper. Such errors often spring from imperfect knowledge of Christ, and obscure views of the life of faith in the risen, living, and interceding Savior. J. C. Ryle S e r m o n N o t e s
