6 In Residence September 2 8 Canon Dr Tom Clammer, Precentor 9 15 Canon Edward Probert, Chancellor Canon Ian Woodward, Vicar of the Close Canon Dr Robert Titley, Treasurer The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean David Halls, Director of Music Canon Dr Tom Clammer, Precentor The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean Dedication Festival - Sunday 30 September The Feast of Dedication - not to be confused with our Patronal Festival of the Blessed Virgin Mary - is an opportunity specifically to celebrate Salisbury Cathedral as a building dedicated to the glory and worship of God. At the Sung Eucharist and other services, we will give thanks for those who, over the centuries, have given of their talents, time and resources to construct, maintain, beautify and adorn it, for worship offered and prayers fulfilled. And we will pray for all who enter and use this place for whatever reason, that here they may discover a heightened sense of the universal presence of God and the potential of every place and person as 'holy ground'. For me and my wife Catherine, it will be a particularly apposite day on which to mark both the 42nd anniversary of my ordination and our final Sunday here before retirement (at the second attempt!) to Northumbria; for we have indeed found ourselves standing on holy ground. God moves in mysterious ways, and the Almighty's blessings can sometimes appear heavily disguised. We had no idea when we moved here to help out for a year or so during the decanal interregnum, how much we ourselves would need your help, support and prayers, particularly following the diagnosis of my cancer in January and continuing treatment. For us, the building that is Salisbury Cathedral will always remain a visible symbol of the faith and fellowship we have shared here, especially through the daily round of worship and prayer. So very many thanks from both of us. We shall greatly miss Salisbury - apart from the appalling traffic 'system'! - but will take with us the fondest of remembrances. God bless you all. The Very Rev'd Charles Taylor, Associate (aka Loose) Canon August 2017-September September 2018 SALISBURY CATHEDRAL
7 This Music Scheme covers one month only due to a high number of staff having holidays in August. As a result we have had extra space to include more information and news in it. Installation of our new Dean The Rev d Canon Nicholas Charles Papadopulos, Canon Treasurer of Canterbury Cathedral and Director of Initial Ministerial Education 2 in the Diocese of Canterbury will be installed as the 81st Dean of Salisbury at a special Evensong on Sunday 9 September at 15:30. Join us to greet and pray for him as he begins his ministry here. Canon Nicholas Papadopulos, aged 51, studied History at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and Law at City University, London. He was called to the Bar by the Middle Temple in 1990 and practised at the criminal Bar for seven years. He trained for ministry at Ripon College Cuddesdon, and subsequently studied for his MA at King s College, London. He served his title as Assistant Curate at St Mark Portsea in the Diocese of Portsmouth from 1999 to From 2002 to 2007 he was Senior Chaplain and Press Officer to the Bishop of Salisbury, and from 2007 to 2013 Vicar of Pimlico St Peter with Westminster Christ Church (St Peter s Eaton Square) in the Diocese of London. Since 2013 he has been Canon Treasurer at Canterbury Cathedral and Director of Initial Ministerial Education in the Diocese of Canterbury. Canon Nicholas is married to Heather, and they have two teenage children. His interests include reading history, poetry and novels, listening to music (of all sorts), cooking and going to the gym and walking. He is also interested in Cyprus and Palestine. New Organ Scholar Having said goodbye to Daniel Mathieson, we now welcome this year s Organ Scholar, Alexander Palotai. He comes to us from Worcester College, Oxford, where he has been Organ Scholar for the last three years. September 2018 SALISBURY CATHEDRAL 7
8 Organ Restoration Our Father Willis Organ is one of our great treasures, and is still fulfilling its purpose 140 years after it was installed in It is an irreplaceable and important part of the country s musical heritage. It is now due for an extensive programme of repair and restoration - not surprising given that since its last overhaul in 1993 it has been used daily. The plan for the restoration is not to alter the unique sound of this magnificent instrument, but to put right what has become in need of repair and to do an extensive overhaul. Harrison & Harrison of Durham, who have had the care of the organ since 1978 and are renowned organ builders and restorers, will carry out this important work. They will dismantle the organ in January 2019 and it will be out of action for the whole of the year, while the restoration is carried out. A scaffold will be put over the full depth of both the north and south quire aisles and there will also be scaffolding in the quire itself, with a bridge between the two to enable the pipes to be lowered to the floor. In January 2020 the organ will be re-installed for tuning and voicing, which will take approximately three months. We have imaginative plans in the pipeline for when the organ will be out of use, including the use of an Allen digital organ, more use of the piano and orchestras as well as unaccompanied singing. The work of the repair itself will cost over 700,000 and we need your help to fund this important work. You can donate directly to the organ restoration fund online using the link Behind the Pipes Experience the Father Willis Organ in person! For a limited time, in advance of the major restoration work planned in 2019, we are able to offer an exciting opportunity for people to play our famous organ in the Cathedral with John Challenger, our Assistant Director of Music. The experience, which will include a photograph of you playing in the organ loft, costs 500 with all funds going directly towards the Organ Restoration Project Fund. These exclusive access visits will take place on evenings throughout September - November Please contact Jilly Wright or Natalie Downing in the Development Office for further information or to book - please see details below. For more information about the organ restoration project or the Behind the Pipes experience contact Jilly Wright on j.wright@salcath.co.uk or call September 2018 SALISBURY CATHEDRAL
