S. Peterson and Valerie Macys.) Jubilate Deo 1 O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; 2 Serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. 3 Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves. We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. 5 For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endureth from generation to generation. King James (1611) Psalm 100: 1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2 Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. 3 Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Sternhold and Hopkins (H&S 1562) two versions Psalm 100: First version by William Kethe (d. 1594) 1 All people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice: Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him and rejoice. 2 The Lord ye know is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his flock, he doth us feed, And for his sheep he doth us take. 3 O enter then his gates with praise, Approach with joy his courts unto

3 Praise, laud, and bless his Name always, For it is seemly so to do. 4 For why? the Lord our God is good, His mercy is for ever sure; His truth at all times firmly stood, And shall from age to age endure. Interesting note from wikip: Old 100 th (melody) is commonly used to sing the lyrics that begin "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," based on Psalm 100, which originated in the Anglo-Genevan Psalter (1560) and is attributed to the Scottish clergyman William Kethe. Kethe was in exile at Geneva at this time, as the Scottish Reformation was only just beginning. This version was sung at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, with harmonization and arrangement by the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. William Kethe was a Scottish protestant, resident in Geneva with the exiles. 25 psalm versions attributed to him were published in English in the Anglo-Genevan Psalter of 1561, this was one of them. Nine of those versions were reprinted in the English Psalter of 1562 (S&H), with Ps 100 being added later in His version of Ps 100 was used again in the Scottish Psalter of Also used in Hymns Ancient and Modern New Standard (1983) number 100. Slightly differing versions of this are found in many psalters of many churches (more than 55 on the Hymnary.org website) Another of the same, by J. H. 1 In God the Lord be glad and light, Praise him throughout the earth; Serve him, and come before his sight With singing and with mirth. 2 Know that the Lord our God he is, He did us make and keep, Not we ourselves, for we are his Own flock and pasture sheep. 3 O go into his gates always, Give thanks within the same; Within his courts set forth his praise, And laud his holy Name. 4 For why? The goodness of the Lord For evermore doth reign, From age to age throughout the world His truth doth still remain. Tate and Brady (T&B 1696) Psalm 100: 1 With one consent let all the earth To God their cheerful voices raise; Glad homage pay with awful mirth And sing before him songs of praise. 2 Convinced that he is God alone, From whom both we and all proceed; We, whom he chooses for his own, The flock that he vouchsafes to feed. 3 O enter then his temple gate, Thence to his courts devoutly press, And still your grateful hymns repeat, And still his Name with praises bless. 4 For he s the Lord, supremely good,

4 His mercy is for ever sure: His truth, which always firmly stood, To endless ages shall endure. Philip Sidney (c. 1580) Psalm 100: O all you lands the treasures of your joy In merry shout upon the Lord bestow. Your service cheerfully on him employ With triumph song into his presence go. Know first that he is God, and after know This God did us, not we ourselves create. We are his flock, for us his feedings grow We are his folk and he upholds our state. With thankfulness, Oh, enter then his gate. Make through each porch of his your praises ring. All good, all grace, of his high name relate He of all grace and goodness is the spring. Time in no terms his mercy comprehends From age to age his truth itself extends. [pashnote: ambitious poetic version of Ps 100 as a Sonnet, rhyming abab bcbc cdcd ee, Four rhymes stow and four rhymes state. But in order to achieve this difficult rhyme, the word order is Perverse, the phrasing v. clumsy, the meaning weak and unnatural. It is interesting to compare this with Kethe s version] George Sandys ( ) from Paraphrases Upon the Psalms (1636) vol. 2 Psalm 100: All from the sun s uprise Unto his setting rays Resound in jubilees The Great Jehovah s praise. Him serve alone In triumph bring Your gifts, and sing Before His throne. Man drew from man his birth But God his noble frame Built of the ruddy earth Filled with celestial flame. His sons we are Sheep by Him led Preserved and fed With tender care. O to His portals press In your divine resorts With thanks His power profess And praise Him in His courts. How good! How pure! His mercies last His promise past For ever sure! Isaac Watts Psalm 100: L. M. A paraphrase. 1 Sing to the Lord with joyful voice, Let every land his name adore;

5 The British isles shall send the noise Across the ocean to the shore. 2 Nations, attend before his throne With solemn fear, with sacred joy; Know that the Lord is God alone; He can create and he destroy. 3 His sovereign power, without our aid, Made us of clay and formed us men; And when, like wandering sheep, we strayed, He brought us to his fold again. 4 We are his people, we his care, Our souls and all our mortal frame: What lasting honors shall we rear, Almighty Maker, to thy name? 5 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs, High as the heavens our voices raise; And earth with her ten thousand tongues Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise. 6 Wide as the world is thy command, Vast as eternity thy love! Firm as a rock thy truth must stand, When rolling years shall cease to move. [pashnote: this is called a paraphrase inferior to Watts usual quality unsatisfactory in that the point of view overpowers the purity and clarity of the original, Adding rhetorical questions, and specific location, prolix, and use of must is wrong compare Kethe] Charles Wesley Psalm 100: 1 Ye sons of men, lift up your voice Ye nations of the earth, rejoice In God rejoice with one accord! Bow all your hearts before his face Adore him for creating grace And shout and sing to Christ the Lord. 2 Know, that the Lord is God alone He made and claims us for his own His creatures for himself designed We are the sheep of Israel s fold The flock he hath redeemed of old His people now is all mankind. 3 O enter then his courts with praise Press to the channels of his grace With joyful thanks your God proclaim Give him the glory of his love And praise him, like the hosts above And bless his all-redeeming name. 4 Praise him, the faithful Lord and good! His mercy hath for ages stood His mercy stands for ever sure His steadfast truth shall never fail His word and oath unchangeable

6 Through all eternity endure. Scottish Psalter (1650 revised 1880) Psalm 100: 1 st version reprints Kethe version (above) 2 nd version follows: 1 O all ye lands unto the Lord Make ye a joyful noise. Serve God with gladness, and before Him come with cheerful voice. 2 Know ye the Lord that he is God Us for himself he made We are his people, and the sheep Within his pasture fed. 3 O enter then his gates with thanks His courts with voice of praise Give thanks to him with joyfulness And bless his name always. 4 Because the Lord our God is good His mercy faileth never And unto generations all His truth endureth ever. Psalter United Presbyterian Ch. of N. America (1887) #166 Psalm 100: Omitted, same as above. Christopher Webber (1986) Psalm 100: 1 Be joyful in the Lord, you lands And serve him all your days; Come now and stand before the Lord With songs of love and praise. 2 Know this: the Lord himself is God; He made us all to keep We are his people, his alone His children and his sheep. 3 Enter his gates with thankfulness With hymns of praise go there; Always give thanks to him and call Upon his Name in prayer. 4 The Lord is good, his mercy stands Forever strong and true; And so his faithfulness endures Age-old and ever new. 10 10 1 Notes: words and phrases & general interpretation & meaning Pashnote: Ps 100 a short psalm of praise, one of the best-loved of all the psalms, a pure prayer-song from the ancient past, translated into well-loved prayer-songs in English and other languages. Set at Ps 99 or 100 position in the Psalter, a sign of the importance of the Psalm (10x10 [10 the number of the commandments]). Also an evangelical exhortation, waiting to be activated, calling on kol eretsu to worship God, i.e. calling on all creation to worship God, which was taken as a literal command to evangelize by the early Christian Church. The psalm is clearly a procession psalm, approaching the Holy Sanctuary, a reenactment of David s bringing back the Ark of the Lord to the Holy Place on the Hill, later the Temple. The word joyfully beshimcha is also used when David brought the Ark back home. It is a very short and perfect prayer-song, and was clearly composed in unity. Each verse has an important message for the faith, and each word is a prophecy. 5 verses which is half the number of holy 10, and in four verses we have the tetragrammaton, the holy four letters. In the other verse we have name which indicates that the psalm is proclaiming God to the world a perfect prayer. We can note that the Psalm summarizes two most important aspects of the OT. 1 God made everything 2 We belong to God. The language used for this, the sheep-metaphor (Ps 23) is the metaphor that the Christian Church will develop as part of its identity. There is some difficulty in how to translate the key terms which are proclaimed by this psalm: Chesed Loving-kindness; Tob Goodness; Emuna Truth, Faithfulness. The Psalm offers a definition of God as a loving God, whose worship is joyful, and this primal truth is the message at the 100 place! As with Ps 23, which is found in some sublime English versions, Ps 100 gives the laurels once again to a Scot, the reformer William Kethe, who made the beautifully clear and perfectly-phrased version that is still widely used. Ps 100 is important in the Septuagint Greek and the Latin. The Greek version was certainly used by the early church, even when the Gospels were being written, and so many of the Greek words used in the Psalm are found in the Gospels. It is most likely that Luke (and his helpers) knew this Greek version by heart. We can glimpse this in the use of the holy word enopion (in the presence, or before the face [of God]) which is found in this Psalm, and used more than 20 times by Luke (but not used at all by Matthew!). The Latin version has been set to countless melodies, and I have put links to a few. The simple and strong Taize chant sends the message of joy very strongly. Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges: Ps 100 culminates the series of psalms for the dedication of the restored Temple beginning with Ps 95. Important point here: The liturgical history of this Psalm is of special interest. The title should probably be rendered A Psalm for the thank-offering (Rev. Vers. marg.), rather than simply A Psalm of thanksgiving (R.V.). It refers to the use of the Psalm in the Second Temple in connection with the sacrifices of thanksgiving (Leviticus 7:11 ff.). For similar notices see the titles of Psalms 38, 70, 92. The general character of its contents makes it probable that it was not specially written for the purpose, but adopted on account of Psalm 100:4. From ancient times it has been used in the daily service of the Synagogue, except upon certain festivals. It was used in the early morning service of Lauds, and at the revision of the Prayer Book in 1552, it was added as an alternative for the Benedictus. [pashnote: questions relating to Liturgical use of the Psalms in various faith and church traditions would be a valuable way to deepen understanding of these great prayer-poems.] Note on variant found in verse 3: The KJV Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture, follows the K thîbh, [Kethiv consonantal Hebrew text of OT] which is supported by the LXX, Syr., and Symm. The A.V. marg. and NRS (Revised KJV) Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture, follows the Q rç, [Qere Masoretic vocalized Hebrew text of OT] which is supported by the Targ., Jer., and Aq. Though the antithesis he and not we ourselves gives a good sense, the reading we are his is far more significant, as adding a fresh thought. Moreover it agrees best with the construction of the verse in the Heb., and it is supported by the parallels in Psalm 95:7; Isaiah 43:1, cp. Isaiah 43:21, Isaiah 44:2. The Heb. words for not and to him (= his) are pronounced identically (lô) though differently spelt: hence the confusion between the readings not we and to him we = his (are) we was easy. [pashnote: the KJV is better than the New Revised Standard, emphasizing that God is the creator]. Psalm 100:4-5. are based on Jeremiah 33:11, cp. Psalm 89:1. Give thanks unto Jehovah, for he is good; for his lovingkindness endureth for ever, became a standing liturgical formula after the exile. NIV: enter his gates: a figurative expression to say join joyfully in the public worship. TNIV: A hymn inviting the people to enter the Temple courts with thank offerings for the God who created them. Although the people call on all the nations of the world to join in their hymn, they are conscious of being the chosen people of God. [i.e. they are the flock that belong to God the shepherd, not another] Tate: letodah in the superscription is not found for any other psalm, translated variously as thanksgiving or thanks-offering. [pashnote: looking at this word we can note that it is similar in form to the tetragrammaton and perhaps signals the holiness of this psalm] a psalm characterized by imperatives: seven imperative verbs used, enter gates, enter courts, give thanks, bless His name. An entry or procession hymn, worshippers in front of the gates, proceed inside, praises sung, thanksgiving meal. Ps 100 and Ps 95 are closely related: shouts of joy, thanksgiving, enter the Temple. Tate emphasizes the importance of the seven-fold injunctions. 1 make a joyful noise 2 serve 3 come 4 know 5 enter 6 be thankful 7 bless. [this is clearly very significant in this psalm] date of this psalm not known perhaps pre-exilic its original composition may have been much earlier [this seems self-evident, given the statement it makes, its content, and the symbolic numbers] Serve God, in the context of Egyptian slavery, means to leave Egypt to go where true sacrifices can be given. Acknowledge that he made the whole history of Israel, i.e. the salvation and continuance of the

people. Shepherd motif a monarchical one, which calls David to mind. Tate has good comments on this which are worth examining (p. 538). Jer 23.1 & Ezek verse 5 is a variation of a formulaic phrase which repeatedly occurs. The phrase itself may well be special paradigm of what the faith ought to be. This verse brings together three aspects of tob goodness, chesed loyal-love and emunato faithfulness in a unique arrangement. God is good is related to the creation of the earth, the word is used then. Gen 1.4. This chapter by Tate is worth rereading. This incorporates some material from Mays. James L. Mays: nothing to add here. Robert Alter: says that and not we ourselves sounds unnatural in Hebrew. He prints the psalm as two verses of 7 lines. States that there is a movement from outside to inside the temple within this brief poem. Schechter: sequence of psalms in the Ashkenazi Western tradition used in prayer service to welcome the Sabbath on Friday evening, and used in this way in the Sephardic Occidental tradition. This points to the importance: climbing the hill to the Temple on the Sabbath. Notes on words: Presence: The fact or condition of being present. In Christian usage esp. from 16 th c In reference to the manner in which Christ is held to be present in the Eucharist. Also for talking about the sovereign: as in (the) presence, to (the) presence, etc.; spec. (now only) in reference to ceremonial attendance upon a person of superior, esp. royal, rank. In earlier usage come before his presence thus suggests that God is King. Be ye sure: this has the sense of be confident and secure in the knowledge & be safe from danger Go your way: meaning let the road you take go to also more modern let your life-choice lead you to Into his gates: a Hebraism meaning, go into the city of God, Jerusalem standing for Temple standing for Heaven Courts: the courts of the Holy Temple for worship Speak good of his Name: general injunction for all prayer, speak good words about the reality of God, the holiness Name: a key to Jewish worship, the true name is too holy to speak, God himself is too holy to see. The name is a safe way of addressing God, and this is the meaning of the orthodox term Hashem (lit. name) Truth: a holy concept used to describe God but actually impossible for humanity to fully explain or understand, though the Bible is for that task. It is a favorite word of the Psalms (40x)Saint John (22x) and Pilate is given a good line (John 18.38). Laud: praise, from Latin Devout: Devoted to divine worship or service; solemn and reverential in religious exercises; pious, religious. Originally from Latin dēvōt-us devoted, given up by vow, pa. pple. of dēvovēre to devote. [from OED] Jubilee: a year of jubilee, a year of celebration, a special year, origin of the word: late L. jūbilæus (Vulgate, etc.), used as n. jubilee, but properly an adj. form (sc. annus), after Gr. ἰωβηλαῖος adj. (Origen, Epiphanius, etc.), f. ἰώβηλος jubilee (Josephus Antiq. iii. xii. 3), ad. Heb. yōbēl, jubilee, orig., it seems, ram, hence ram's horn used as a trumpet, with which the jubilee year was proclaimed. The Latin form jūbilæus instead of jōbēlæus shows association of the O.T. word with the native L. jūbilum wild cry, shout, and jūbilāre to shout to, shout, halloo, huzza (see jubil v.); and in Christian L. there was established an association of sense between these words and the Hebrew jubilee [note from OED] Channel: various meanings re: course for waters, rivulet, stream, hollow bed for running waters, extended to The Channel, word related to Canal from Latin Canalum. Bless God: good note from Tate. To bless God means to praise him for his deeds and gifts. The verb bless BRK expresses appreciation, gratitude, respect, a joint relationship, good will of the speaker, promoting respect for the one blessed. When God is the object BRK should be rendered praise. Let us learn a couple of Hebrew words for each psalm. See above for transliterated Hebrew, Greek and Latin versions and word list. 2 Notes: literary comparison & evaluation. Which of these versions communicates the Psalmist s feelings?
