3 ABOUT OUR PARISH Welcome, New Parishioners and Sunday Visitors: Mary Immaculate of Lourdes Parish is a canonically open parish of the Archdiocese of Boston, which has a Traditional Latin Mass apostolate. Both the ordinary form of the Roman Rite (1970 Missal) and the extraordinary form (1962 Missal) are celebrated here with the blessing of His Eminence Sean Cardinal O Malley, Archbishop of Boston. We encourage new parishioners to please register in the parish and to introduce yourselves to the Pastor. We are always glad to welcome Sunday visitors here to our beautiful, historic church. We look forward to your coming again. Mary Immaculate of Lourdes (Formerly St. Mary s Parish, ) 1910) Newton/Needham, Massachusetts Newton & Needham s Oldest Roman Catholic Parish Iraqi/Arab Catholic Community: Our Lady of Mesopotamia PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO FILL OUT A PARISH REGISTRATION FORM. Parish Mission Statement What then is a parish? It is the smallest section of the one universal flock which has been entrusted to Peter by the Lord. Under the authority of a responsible priest who has received the care of souls from his bishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is a community cut to human dimensions, in which the shepherd can know his flock and the flock can know their shepherd At the heart of this area, we find the parish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, its confessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unity and the centre of community life. 4 SEPTEMBER IS THE MONTH OF OUR LADY OF SORROWS Pastor s Note ANNUAL PARISH REPORT 2016 Each year the Pastor of a parish is mandated to make an Annual Report to the parishioners. In past years I have made this report in November, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, since that is close to the Anniversary of the Dedication of our parish church in 1910 November 24th, it was Thanksgiving Day. The Archdiocese of Boston, however, requires this report to be made by September 30th, so for that reason I am giving it today. In the pamphlet rack of the front vestibule there are copies of the Annual Report, one report for the Church and one for St. Mary s Cemetery. These are available for you to take. I will be speaking at all the Masses this weekend on the information in the report but I will lay out the basic points here. Church Our Total Operating Income for Fiscal Year 2016 (July 1st, 2015-June 30th, 2016) was $378,588. Last year it was $340,608. Our Sunday/Holy Day Offertory jumped from $281,660 to $316,588, which represents a 12% increase. We also received some especially generous Gifts, Bequests and Other Donations totaling $206,862, giving us a Total Income for FY 2016 of $585,450. Our major capital expense was the repaving of both parking lots. This cost us $160,198. We anticipated that the sale of the St. Elizabeth Center would cover the cost of this project (which it has). For book-keeping purposes, the sale is not recorded in this year s report because it did not close before June 30th. The money realized from the sale is $709,000. Only the deposit shows on this year s report, page 2: $37,500. If we include the extra donations and take out the cost of the paving, the actual Net Operating Income Deficit for this Fiscal Year was $154,925. If for future budgetary planning we exclude this Year s Bequests and One-Time Gifts then the Net Operating Income Deficit rises to $361,787. Parish Cemetery Our Total Income for St. Mary s Cemetery was $285,612. Our Total for Operating Expenses was $274,312, leaving us with a Net Operating Income of $11,300. Together with the paving of the church parking lots we also paved several sections of the cemetery roads. This cost $54,417. There was enough income in the operating account from last year, however, to cover the cost for this capital repair. Therefore, the Church did not have to transfer any money to the Cemetery. We have kept up with our payments of Perpetual Care to the Archdiocese and all of our dividends from the Perpetual Care Account have been rolled back into the fund: $74,025. Conclusions In many ways we have had a very good year. Thanks to the generosity of our Angel Donors and the bequests of deceased benefactors our Church operating deficit was much smaller than we had forecast, so we had to draw down less from our parish endowment. The successful sale of the St. Elizabeth Center has increased the parish endowment, giving us all the funds necessary for making the Lower Church Hall handicapped accessible at last. Our well-caredfor parish cemetery is serving its mission as a Catholic cemetery. The obvious problem is: How do we close the gaping budget hole in the Church s operating expenses? The reflexive response in the face of any budget deficit is usually: Cut expenses! In this case, however, that s the wrong answer. The fixed costs of running a parish on this property are at this level, as anyone can verify by comparisons with other area parishes. The simple reality is that if we want to keep this beautiful parish of Mary Immaculate of Lourdes open, then it has to come from the stewardshiplevel giving of the parish faithful. (Fr. Higgins) September 25th, A.D th Sunday after Pentecost/26th Sunday of the Year 4
5 SCRIPTURE STUDY SUNDAY EPISTLES STUDY NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST EPHESIANS 4:23-28 In today's Epistle, St. Paul tells the Christians in Ephesus, "Be ye renewed in the spirit of your mind" (v. 23). The larger context here is an exhortation for practicing the virtues of our baptism. In v. 22, he exhorts us to "[p]ut off the old man that belongs to your former manner of life," and in v. 24, he says that we must "put on the new man, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness" (v. 24, RSV). As the commentaries note, "putting on the new man" is a clothing analogy referring to baptism, and evokes the rite wherein the newly baptized puts on a white garment symbolic of baptismal grace. With this analogy, St. Paul indicates that we must continue to choose to live our baptismal identity with conviction. In order to do this, we need to be occupied with right thinking, we must renew our minds. We must think thoughts that promote virtue and love for God and neighbor (cf. Phil. 4:8-9). Renewing our minds involves the deliberate changing of specific habits of thought so as to become holy. This kind of thing needs to take place regularly in the context of Sacramental Confession, but also in our daily prayers. As Jesus clearly shows us in the Gospel, our heart attitudes are the font of all other sins (cf. Mt. 15:10-20). This is all very much in the spirit of today's Collect, wherein we ask God to "remove everything that might hinder us: and thus freed in body and soul, we may with full liberty seek [His] will." We should be consoled by the petition of this Collect, because we are entrusting the renewal ultimately to God, who created our minds. We do not trust principally in our own resources and wisdom, but in His. It is simply another way of saying, "and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." We also do well to note the original Latin word adversantia in this Collect, which is translated in one hand Missal as "that [which] might hinder," but which is perhaps better translated as "adverse things," that is, things that are turned against us. Such things are not abstract coincidental happenings of fate, but include specific lies and temptations the devil suggests to us. St Peter calls him the "adversary," and so, "adverse things" such as lies are traced back to a personal source, whom Jesus tells us is trying to "steal and kill and destroy" His sheep (cf. 1 Pet. 5:8; Jn 10:10, RSV). Hence, we see that renewing our minds is a defensive strategy. In light of this, let us turn to the wholesomeness of the Holy Rosary, for it is among the best ways to defend ourselves from temptation. Inspired by St. Louis De Montfort's The Secret of the Rosary, I strongly recommend the following things. Renew your mind by finding a good prayer book that contains helpful meditations on the mysteries, and read these meditations as you pray each decade (if you already do this, keep it up!). Sincere fidelity to Jesus and Mary in the Rosary, as well as humble perseverance therein, will serve gradually to sanctify our habits of thought, and will also encourage us in charity when we confront our limitations in virtue. In the concluding Collect of the Rosary, we ask God "that meditating upon these mysteries...we may imitate what they contain, and obtain what they promise." We must note that it is the meditation on the lives of Jesus and Mary that is crucial here. Renewing our minds in Jesus and Mary is the key to "obtain[ing] what the mysteries promise," i.e., growth in charity, and ultimately, eternal life. May Jesus and Mary help us to grow in their love in this devotion. Mr. David Allen, M.T.S., is the lay Pastoral Associate for our parish of Mary Immaculate of Lourdes. 9 LATIN MASS PROPERS: NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST INTROIT: I am the salvation of the people, saith the Lord: in whatever tribulation they shall cry to Me, I will hear them; and I will be their Lord for ever. Psalm 77:1 Attend, O My people, to My law; incline your ears to the words of My mouth. V. Glory be to the Father. COLLECT Almighty and merciful God, in Thy goodness keep us, we beseech Thee, from all things hurtful; that we, being ready both in body and soul, may accomplish those things which belong to Thy service. Through our Lord. EPISTLE: Ephesians 4: Brethren: Be ye renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, who according to God is created in justice and holiness of truth. Wherefore, putting away lying, speak ye the truth every man with his neighbour, for we are members one of another. Be angry, and sin not. Let not the sun go down upon your anger. Give not place to the devil. He that stole, let him now steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have something to give to him that suffereth need. GRADUAL: Psalm 140: 2 Let my prayer be directed as incense in Thy sight, O Lord. V. The lifting up of my hands as evening sacrifice. ALLELUIA: Psalm 104: 1 Alleluia, alleluia. Give glory to the Lord, and call upon His name: declare His deeds among the nations. Alleluia. GOSPEL: Matthew 22: 1-14 At that time, Jesus spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king, who made a marriage for his son; and he sent his servants, to call them that were invited to the marriage, and they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying: Tell them that were invited: Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my beeves and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come ye to the marriage. But they neglected: and went their ways, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise; and the rest laid hands on his servants, and having treated them contumeliously, put them to death. But when the king had heard of it, he was angry; and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city. Then he saith to his servants: The marriage indeed is ready, but they that were invited were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as you shall find, call to the marriage. And his servants going forth into the ways, gathered together all that they found, both bad and good; and the marriage was filled with guests. And the king went in to see the guests; and he saw there a man who had not a wedding garment: and he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither, not having on a wedding garment? But he was silent. Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are chosen. OFFERTORY: Psalm 137: 7 If I shall walk in the midst of tribulation, Thou wilt quicken me, O Lord; and Thou wilt stretch forth Thy hand against the wrath of my enemies; and Thy right hand shall save me. SECRET Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord, that the gifts which we offer up in the sight of Thy majesty, may avail us to salvation. Through our Lord. COMMUNION: Psalm 118: 4-5 Thou hast commanded Thy commandments to be kept most diligently: O that my ways may be directed to keep Thy justifications. POSTCOMMUNION May the healing power of Thy grace, O Lord, mercifully rid us of all perversity of heart, and make us ever cleave to Thy commandments. Through our Lord.
